After two and a half years of being bogged down in brutal trench warfare in eastern Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin appears to be attempting to adjust the narrative that the war has somehow revealed that Russia’s military isn’t as effective as the west believed before the invasion and that Russia is no longer a global power by sending a four-ship flotilla to Cuba.

Russia is 2 generations ahead in hypersonic missles.
Do you really drive around in that thing?
@@GrzegorzDurda That's actually bullsh.
@@CakePrincessCelestia Then you have not been following this tech closely. Russia has in fact always been superior in their missile tech. From their engines to guidance systems. Even the SR71 was vulnerable to their systems.
The tug boat tagging along is hilarious
It doubles as a supply ship

I bet those crews were super stoked about this deployment.
They are likely quite relaxed and refreshed for the next pirt call in Venezuela. 😎
R.I.P. Sir Sean.
I was thinking of this quote the minute I heard the first news report about this trip.
I came here for this quote
Beat me to it.
The fact that they had to go in company with a tug tells you all you need to know.
My own view is it's a tacit admission Russia has few friends.
If a western warship breaks down, there's usually an ally nearby to provide assistance and a friendly port where repairs can be made. If a Russian warship breaks down, Russia is always very loathe to accept help from what it considers "enemies" and has rejected help in the past even though it has resulted in tragedy. They wouldn't want to leave a ship floundering for days while a tug is dispatched from a base in Russia, so they send one along. On the entire journey that task group has made from Russia, every country, with the exception of Cuba, would be considered "hostile". Putting in to Havana gives Putin the opportunity to very publicly "cock a snoot" at the US, something that's of immense value to Putin, who's always playing to the crowd.
That makes Cuba more important to Russia than Russia is to Cuba.
And, while they're there, perhaps they'll offer some young Cubans Russian citizenship and a handsome pay-out after a "short" spell of military service... Look at those ships; wouldn't you love to sign-up for the Russian military!
Now comment on the US Crap fleet to Gaza.
That they felt the need to bring a salvage tug along, is telling. 😅
Yea...thirty years in the Navy and never once did we deploy with a tug.
@@theodoreolson8529 I mean, you probably would have if you had no friendly ports enroute to stop at if need be.
@@NitroDragona fleet oiler or supply ship maybe, but you only need a tug if you think there's a good chance of breaking down.

The CV Kitty Hawk was towed back to the US from Japan on her final voyage. If I recall correctly it was because her boilers were unsafe from age and less than satisfactory maintenance.
She was the last carrier to use boilers.
That was the only time I can recall a US Carrier being towed.
If that tug breaks down they are screwed.
10 knots, limited by the tug. 😂
Why don't they just make the whole flotilla out of the tugs.
That was a painful transition across the Atlantic!

With Prigozhin gone there are more to go around.
Even more to go around if there are continued "aircraft accidents" and "falling out of third story windows".

Cold War submarine vet here. I don't think a Russian frigate, a Russian SSGN, and a pair of surface support ships make an intimidating 'flotilla'. I think this is more of a PR thing for Russian media. I have to think that there is more than one US attack sub tracking them... and the US sub doesn't need a surface support ship.

Russia's Club-K container missile system-four land attack or anti-ship missiles concealed in a standard 40-foot shipping container comes back into focus. They can be carried on the deck of a ship, on the back of a rail car, truck, or even sitting on the ground and fired. This system was first unveiled back in 2010 but has largely faded from the news. FYI. Thanks, Ward, for another timely update and analysis. I always enjoy your videos, especially since I'm a landlubber.
Look at the missing plates on the subs exterior. It is definitely not hiding acoustically.
A few missing acoustic tiles won't have much effect on anything.
I missed Christmas 1985 for similar reasons. I was stationed aboard a Knox class frigate in Mayport, FL. There was a similar set of Russian ships (including a sub) en route across the Atlantic, headed for Cuba. They'd been tracked by satellite since they left port. The Russians knew we were tracking them. But, we got elected to go out and "show them". Our basic mission was to intercept them around Bermuda, fall in behind them, and simply trail them to Cuba. Just a visible presence, nothing more. In our case, we were the only ones there from the US side. At least, the only US asset acknowledged, even within our own Operations department on that ship (I was a radar tech).
The interesting part is that we had a rather oddball CO. Like, we were the only ship in Mayport with a dress code to get off the ship, in port in Mayport. A man nicknamed "Mongo" by the wardroom. His own children afraid to visit him on the ship.
However, he didn't exactly follow orders on that mission. Because we didn't just fall in behind them and follow them there. We did loops through their formation, as close to their ships as we might be in approaching an unrep with one of our own. At least, for the first day or so. Then we fell in behind where we belonged. Rumor was that the Russians on those ships radioed Moscow, who called DC, etc. I got some decent pictures out of it, given some dolphin came by as well, making a nice photo op. Dolphin, with Russian ships in the background.
Mostly though, I don't recall that mission getting the same attention as this has this year.
A submarine, a frigate, and two support ships aren't exactly the Great White Fleet.
I was wondering when Russia would paddle some of their “ships” down to Cuba… I was also curious if they’d be followed by a herd of tugs and rescue vessels.

Russian tugs are supply ship and maintenance hub in one. Why wouldn't they bring it along?
'Kazan' and 'Admiral Gorshkov' are hardly their newest asset.
It gave them the opportunity to do realistic firing simulations, probe our naval response (we literally send 3 ships and a maritime patrol aircraft, still couldn't find 'Kazan') but most importantly, it's a routine visit for the Russian Navy.
