A bunch of comments (some complaints) in my recent goalie video asking for Thatcher Demko coverage, and I follow up with... JT Miller. Lmao, guys, I promise a Demko segment is coming. Stay tuned. Hope you enjoy this one, though! - Charlie
It's kind of cool that over a decade later AV's direct and honest approach with a player is paying off again for Vancouver. I think even among Canucks fans Miller doesn't get the respect he deserves because of #40 and #43 but he has been maybe the team's best and most consistent player for the past 3 seasons.
I so agree with you and wish I had mentioned the AV part in your wording instead of mine. It's such a cool "full circle" story. Thanks for sharing your observations on fan perception, as well.
Gotta love the guy. It's a shame he's done coaching. From a TSN article in July: "When I signed my contract with the Flyers, I told those around me that it was my last [deal]," Vigneault said. "There is nothing that made me change my mind."
Miller doesn't take any crap out there and when on his game is an intimidating force, especially along the boards. He and Boeser together are tough for any team to handle.
Awesome insight into JT. So much hate directed toward him on social media and online forums, nice to see a take going into his backstory offering a much more introspective look on him! Great work Mr. Edward!
I've been saying it for years, while everyone was saying he was too immature and to trade him, JT is the heart and soul of this team. The Canucks are blessed to have him.
Loved JT ever since he joined the Canucks. I never understood the hate about his attitude, all i saw was a super competitive guy who wants to win, and i think thats good to have on your team
Sports fans are notorious for hating anyone who has anything resembling an actual personality with actual, human emotions... (until they start winning, of course) 😂
I think the interesting thing to note about Miller's 2022-23 season is despite all the criticism he received throughout the year he still finished with 82 points. I think his competitive fire does sometimes boil over, and there were moments last year where his ire was directed towards his teammates which is certainly over the line. But with that being said, even when the Canucks were at rock bottom, it was still clear that he cared, which is more than you could say for a lot of the guys on the team
There can be no denying his productivity in a Canucks jersey. I do feel he lost his way a little last year trying to do too much on a team that wasn’t going well and that wound up with him cheating for rushes alongside Horvat and getting riled up about anything and everything, but he is genuinely a passionate guy. This season he’s been an utter beast. I used to have mixed feelings about him; loved the production, didn’t love the baggage. He’s playing so focused now I truly feel he’s the engine of the team and without him they’d be nothing like the team they’ve proven themselves to be up to this point.

JT has been the best Canucks players for at least 3-4 years. I knew that watching how he was the only dominate Canuck in those crappy years. Most people were blind because all they saw was JT's attitude and not his game, but think about it. If JT wasn't so good, why would he be mad at everyone else who couldn't play up to his level? If you played sports you would understand how frustrating it is when you have a teammate that can't play up to your level.
It can definitely be frustrating. Not to compare Miller to Wayne Gretzky (obviously), but as a comparable story, when Gretzky was coaching the Coyotes, he always seemed frustrated that they couldn't understand his instructions. To him, it was simple math. To them, it was calculus. Lol!
This Canucks team is just full of parody. From trading Corey Schneider for 1st round pick and drafting Bo Horvat with that pick. To trading Bo Horvat to a GM that gave us that pick but is now the GM of the NYI and not the Devils. To the Canucks management ties all with the former Penguin players that play for the Canucks now. Or even Jim Rutherfords tie to drafting Elias Lindholm in Carolina. And even this story about Miller and his motivation from ex Coach V of the Canucks from their last time they were a top team in the NHL.
That Schneider trade was bad for Vancouver (we were offered the 5th pick and a prospect from Edmonton), but it was the dumbest, most idiotic move for New Jersey. They were picking 9th because they were in decline, their team was horrid, getting a great goalie, and he was great until he got brutally injured, only got them points they DID NOT NEED. At a time when they should have been picking 1st - 3rd, they were picking in the fucking teens because they got Schneider. A really dumb move.
Peak Miller is here right now. But then again the Canucks as a whole suddenly pryed a window open for a Stanley Cup. Its now or never for Miller and the Canucks.
General managers consider 34 as the danger zone where the big drop off typically happens, but there's always variance. I think it's more a matter of money than it is belief in the player's abilities, you know? Just a risk-reward thing handing out contracts.
The problem is players aged 28yrs-29yrs old getting 8 Year contracts, those contracts can heavily backfire. 4year deals would make way more sense for players in their late 20s.
Funny though if you watched him play the 2 years before we picked him up he looked like a really good player doing good things on a 3rd line role. I was elated to say the least when we got him. Our media has become as brutal as Torontos almost. Basically called him out because he was not playing like a super star. To me has been Vancouvers maybe best player since being on the team. He has made huge improvements to the team. There was no muscle before him also. We had the weakest team in the NHL. When we got him I thought we made the best trade in the NHL that year. And still think it our best move besides Hronek, Suter Soucy, Zadorov. Our backup was a good move to.
Always so satisfying to scout out a player that early and know he could be better than the minutes he's getting - that had to feel so good for you to call that! I wonder if there's another storyline to cover in what you said about Vancouver's media becoming almost as brutal as Toronto's. I know Edmonton has a guy, Mark Spector, that has definitely rubbed people the wrong way...
Never used to be so volatile. But many have actually come from Toronto. I think we only have a few local grown talent. But a lot of fans were disgruntled and not say much good about the team. Our team did deserve some criticism. Maybe a lot.Don't remember anytime a writer would try to write a piece that could potentially divide the team.Basically fiction turned serious. And I agree with you on Spector.@@GoalZoneCharlie
I think JT is awesome. And I like that he's emotional. Sure he boils over sometimes but his energy is also responsible for a lot of wins. He just wants to win so bad and I think that's a good thing. He's a lot smarter than people give him credit for too. Go Canucks Go!
My friend, I understand your pain. As a Blackhawks fan, the second we traded Artemi Panarin, I knew we'd just made the worst trade in franchise history. I still get upset about it to this day, lol.
I was part of the group that was screaming for a rebuild and wanted him traded after his 100 point season. I didn't doubt he could do it again, so I didn't actually mind the contract I guess, but nobody, and I mean nobody, not even he, saw his rise to a good, if not great, two-way center.
No one would have blamed you, and I believe most people probably agreed with you! But this is what makes sports so fun; these random deviations from the norm.
0:42 And there was a regression last season, so he's definitely the sort of player who needs the right coach to light a fire under his ass. When that fire is lit, the fun begins. I do appreciate that he takes ownership of who he was and who he is..
For your first point - it definitely does appear to be the case! For your second point, that's my favorite part of the story. He's gotten a lot of hate, but he isn't blind to his own faults.

Let’s not forget they didn’t pick him right away in all stars draft. And Hughes has to say sorry lol
He's my favorite player aside from Demko.
Thank you AV for the coach we’ve always been respected for in Vancouver.

I loved and miss Miller when he was with the rangers. Was one of our most skilled and hard working players.
I hate how the league thinks 30’s is getting old when your really just entering your prime

Gotta give Benning credit for his forsight
Boeser,Miller,Hughes,Petey,Demko: The all-stars of the team and all from the Benning regime and era.
Reminds me of how all the Blackhawks that mattered during their dynasty years were acquired by Dale Tallon and Mike Smith (not Stan Bowman).
Benning definetly made some good moves, but when he made bad ones, they were astronomically bad 😂
