The problem with this strategy is that it goes beyond “wall street bets”, when it hits twitter and other platforms people who have no idea of the spirit of that group engage in the same risky trades and end up loosing money unwittingly. It’s a pyramid scheme without the scheme because it was intended to be a gag. However those that buy late will likely exit at a loss. The lucky bastards that entered early will gain big and then continue to make risky bets because they’re now emboldened by their gains.
The BIGGEST thing that you failed to mention is that short selling a stock is BORROWING stock so that you can sell it now. You then have to pay that stock back later. You're basically betting that the stock will go down so that you can buy it later at a lower price and pocket the difference. By doing this millions of times, you're selling the stock which drives the prices down if it's done en mass like was happening here. So for example, you borrow when it's $10 a share and sell it. You now have $10. When this happens with billions of dollars worth of stock, you drive the prices down. Then when the stock is $3 a share you buy back the stock you owe and repay it. You keep the $7 difference. Multiply by millions of shares. Except the hedgefunds didn't stop. They just kept short selling and short selling and short selling because they're greedy fuckers. Then Wallstreetbets noticed and everyone bought stocks for dirt cheap. Thing is, those short sells have a time limit on them and when the time limit is up, you have to pay them back no matter what. So those hedge funds had to buy back those stocks at $140+ when they only paid around $3 for them. Ouch for them. That's karma, bitch. Though what isn't being talked about much is that some of these billionaires have already gotten their bailouts from the government to the tune of about $2 billion.
