    Hey Devin,
I would not normally share this in the TH-cam comments section but at this point i figured why not ? You may recall or maybe not but I was the bass player for BLS around 2000-2001 and we did some shows in Canada with you and SYL and I just wanted to tell you that I wasn’t sober at that time. I dont think any of us were, right ? 😂 but I really enjoyed the time we got to chat on the bus after a show in Toronto I think 🤔 . Eventually I Cleaned up my act around 2006. Anyhow, I’m just writing this to tell you that your music has gotten me through some of my darkest moments and you continue to inspire me every day. I love what your doing with the quarantine project and now this podcast. Your a powerful example in the way your using your creativity to cope with stress of what we’re all experiencing right now. Thanks for sharing yourself with all of us. Stay healthy and true brother. The world needs you right now.
    With gratitude and respect always,
    Steve

Hey Steve -- not to derail things, but I met you briefly when played with Crowbar, at a show in Chicago. We talked guitars for a bit, and you gave me some valuable tips that are still helpful with my playing today. Just wanted to say "thanks" for that.

As a 20 year old going through a very confusing and character defining time, this is a monumental podcast for me. Ocean machine fell into my life at around 10 years old and its been a monumental piece on how i write music and look at life. I shook your hand once at a concert when I was around 14 and you instantly went into dad mode and looked at my father and said you were so sorry for the jokes you made during the concert even though that was our favorite parts. At many parts in my life you've been a very pertenant piece in many puzzles at different stages. This podcast has honestly been another of those moments of putting things in perspective making me feel better about what we are all doing as well as what Im doing. I don't expect you to read this but i just want to say, Thank you Devin, thank you very very much for how much you've touched my life and others in ways like this.

My favourite album of all time. I can’t even begin to describe the emotional depth and imaginative breadth of this work of profound beauty. Sometimes even thinking about it gives me chills. And if I happen to be staring out of a train window listening to Funeral for the 234th time in my life I can still look down and see every hair on my arms standing in salute and feel my soul bleed into the atmospherics and drift out into the sky. I’ve never met you Devin, but if you happen to read this then I just wanted you know that this album has a level of awe-inspiring authentic beauty that I rarely, if ever, encounter in life, despite a rigorous quest for it. It is honestly a staggering achievement and something I will treasure for the rest of my life. I have unlimited respect and admiration for what you achieved on this one. Just drenched in pure beauty. Ok I’ll stop rhapsodising now.

I just came from psychiatric session, treating my bipolar. The nurse didn't feel like offering any help and I am very frustrated and defeated.
Suddenly I found this podcast and.. I feel so relieved, enlighted, my pain is _actually_ understood by this one-way talk of one of my idols and it feels like he is speaking to ME.
Devin, you are a healer in this plaqued game I try to call life.
Also, "Two weeks" is amazing song and Alien my favourite album, it "speaks" to me.

A friend of mine introduced me to (very short) snippets of Biomech back in 1998, downloaded from internet. I was obsessed with the album, particularly with Life, but also Regulator and Voices In The Fan. I spent months trying to unsuccessfully find in that Jurassic era internet longer cuts from the album. It was also unavailable in my country, I asked my father to buy "Ocean Machine" in a trip he did to London (he brought me a CD from Ocean Colour Scene, bless him). In the end my sister bought it in a trip he did to Japan and sent it to me.

I've always wanted this. I've always had this fascination with listening to Devin talk. He has such a uniquely elegant yet weird mind. I love listening to him discuss his motivations and meanings behind the art he creates. Becuase to me, that's what his music is. It's not just a collection of sounds in the same sense most bands release albums. Most bands put out albums to make a profit or prove a point or get more fame. But not Devin. He writes this music and allows us all to experience it with him becuase it's what his soul demands. It's his art. And you can feel that emotion and depth and beauty in his songs.
Usually at least once every other day, if not every day, I will listen to what I call the "golden trio" from this album. Funeral, Bastard, Death of Music. In that order. But I listen to his live versions from the Z2 live show he did at Royal Albert Hall. Absolutely epic performances of all three songs. Send chills down my spine every time. I love this man.

Incredible podcast. One of the bands he mentions here is The Wildhearts. An absolute kick ass rock and roll band that Devin revved up as a second guitarist in the mid 90s for a lil while. If yous out there have never heard them, you gotta check out the band. They are unbelievable. Full of huge riffs, catchy melodies and roaring guitars. Around the time that Devin was in the band, they were riding high in England, and theres some footage up here of Devin playing with them at a festival. Check out the Earth vs. the Wildhearts, and PHUQ albums for some brilliant brilliant mid 90s rock. And when yer there, the Wildhearts recent album, "Renaissance Men". Glad to hear them mentioned alongside all the other wonderfully told stories here.

Ocean Machine was and still is the single most important album in my life, on so many levels. I found it after listening to Sex and Religion, and also reading some comments written by Steve Vai regarding Devin. At the time I was super into Steve Vai and a lot of other "guitar wank" type music, but from that moment forward Devin Townsend's music became a part of my emotional core, thus exposing me to all sorts of stuff I would never have experienced or appreciated otherwise.
Thanks so much for doing this podcast, it's a fascinating listen. (Though please consider putting it out on more traditional podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, etc so I don't have to leave a video playing with my screen on!)

You really provide some increase in quality of life these days. Just what you want when you sit home doing stuff, have somebody talk. It's like... LISTENING TO RADIO! This is what the 90's was, I had just forgotten it. Having radio on all day for having actually some interesting shows in the air. I think the 7th thing probably comes from traditionally believing that 7 is a powerful, magical number. You probably recognize something like 7th son of the 7th son, same thing. This fear of dealing with yourself and life and people resonates very deeply.

Holy crap. Being a fan of yours since about 1997 or so, hearing all of this is a trip, particularly since this is my favorite album of all time. Transported right back to that era. I can’t wait to hear the stories around the early SYL albums.

Thanks for this Devin great podcast and super interesting. Really helps break up day and I love hearing your thought processes when it comes to music. Blows my mind you had to go back to dish washing after being with Steve Vai.
Also the sound quality of the podcast is lovely.

Devin, your music and your personal approach means so much to us. We are truly humbled that you are taking your time to help us get to know you and your craft even more. I've been following you for years and even saw you live at that infamous Be Prog, My Friend (he said awkwardly!) in Barcelona :)
    Thank you Devin!

    Thanks for doing this mate.
From Shellharbour Australia (now chilling in the hot sugar can fields of Bundaberg on my dad's property).
Feel like I been waiting for this since I got this in the mid 90s and I remember I was teaching myself Chinese I Ching at the time and have been doing it since. Every time I think of either the other follows.
Thankyou Devin. You have accomplished more than you can comprehend....and you know what, you don't need to understand just......let it roll.

This was amazing. Through the years I've been trying to find little nuggets of info during live-sets and such on backgrounds of songs. This is everything I ever dreamed of. A two hour deep-dive into the history and mental and emotional space behind a particular album. Ocean Machine/City and SYL/Accelerated Evolution and Terria for sure interest me the most, but it could be a good opportunity to (re)appreciate any album.

I picture all of us wandering through cities, tall plexiglass walls we all wander thru Los Angeles here 6 feet apart with a loud beeper that goes off if we falter to the 'out of bounds' areas....shit!!! What will this Quarantine feeling bring next? Ziltoid under seige? Stop....Love...Stop...Peace...Go. Thanks Dev!! So not nuts yet around here! Yet....

Fascinating hearing him explain how the song “Ocean Machines” was the one track that got left behind in Spain from the original recordings and that it most likely is lost to this day. It’s on the Acid Sordid demos and arguably what I consider to be his very best songs. The key reason this guy is so interesting in my judgment is how he spits out these amazing tunes left and right with many of them not being given a proper place on an album. The bonus disc to Epicloud is another example, as well as the Infinity demos.

Devin your story greatly resonates with me, especially being more sensitive than others and this overwhelming need to express things. I am walking a very similar path in my life. I've also heard from close friends of mine that generations of suppressed emotions could bear children who become highly sensitive. Sort of an emotional radar without controls. It took a very long time to learn to recognise it, regain control and use it well.

My god, I can listen to you just talk about things all day, Devin. The reason you say you feel like a douche is the same reason that you didn't want your name attached to ocean machine. Please keep doing these, even if they're short. Your mind is amazing, makes people think, and listen. Genuinely listen to what you're saying. In the same way we, the fans, genuinely sit and just listen to your music, as an experience and not "shuffle all".

I never listen to podcasts, but I was riveted for the whole thing. I had a broad idea of the struggles you'd had in releasing Ocean Machine, and the chronology with Steve Vai etc, but it's so fascinating to hear that fleshed out in full. I also really appreciate you going through the track meanings one by one - I was slightly worried it might 'spoil the magic' for me as a longtime fan of that album, but it just gave me an even deeper appreciation of the songs. They have a thematic continuance that I' guess I've always felt, but never properly understood until now. Love you Devy, see you on the road when this is all over.
