By the way, tip about the OR operation: the word "or" in speech is often equivalent to an operation called the exclusive OR (true if one or the other is true, but not both), like in "Your money or your life". The logical OR is sometimes made more explicit in ambiguous scenarios with "and/or", as in "Violation of the copyright may be punished with a fine and/or jail time."
for the last example of conjunction for the color of the shirt and short. Would it also be correct to write q ' : " my shorts are any other color besides grey" ? and so then the compound statement becomes p ^ q .
Super intimidated by this all so far, seems to be alot of laying groundwork before getting into anything practical, hope it all starts to come together soon.
Ya basically. The goal is to build up logical skills first so that in the future when we do the fun stuff that actually applies, you won't be bogged down by the logic parts
From someone who struggles to understand mathematical concepts, this made perfect sense! Thank you for breaking it down like this, and without drawing it out to the point I lose it again!😊
It took me until my 2nd year of college before I actually learned about logic of mathematical proofs. It baffles me how much easier it was to learn more modern fields of mathematics with that foundation. Discrete Mathematics should be a required course in High School level math
Wow! Cool board. 😁I haven't touched Mathematics for about 12 years. I'm going to study a PGCE in Mathematics, so this is a good refresher. My brain 🧠🤯forgot all this stuff. Such simple, clear and short explanations. Thank you.
your videos are gems! thank you very much for this great work :) I tried an online Edx course where the teacher tried to explain these statements but for me, it was difficult to follow him, and left the course. After finishing this course (videos series) I would take the Edx course again and I think I could understand it better.
When you don't understand the topic explained by your professor, so she sends you this TH-cam playlist:/ BTW great videos, really made things more understandable.
You right... It should be a statement because it is either true or false... That is what a statement is all about. If we hv to put value, then only can be a statement...? If we put a value to x for x>2, then it will become either a tautology or a contradiction... There is no more either true or false... Example: 5>2 is a tautology.. If we build a truth table for this statement, we only have ONE possibility, which is True. Similarly, 1>2 is a contradiction. If we build a truth table for this statement, we only have ONE possibility, which is False... While in fact, x>2 has value either true or false. If we build the truth table for this statement, there are 2 possibilities. This is a statement is all about... A statement is not about it must be true or must be false. I agree with you
Yes, there is. Some people call them “predicates”, others call them “free propositions” or “free statements”, because the x is a “free” or “dummy” variable. They are usually denoted with parentheses, such as P(x); once you chose a value for x, such as x=2, it becomes a statement, namely P(2). The study of predicates is called “predicate logic” or “first-order logic”.
Could anyone answer this question, it does not let me sleep at night sometimes... how on earth is Doctor Trefor in the video writing on that glass sort of thing and it looks right to the viewers? I mean is he writing it inverted from his point of view or is it photoshopped or what? I just cannot get my head around how can someone write inversely and how does it align with the printed content displayed on the screen?
I’m a senior in high school and one of the courses I am taking is college prep math so when I get to college I at least will know what I’m doing. When I learned my 2nd lesson on the 3rd day of school I told my one friend what I was learning and when she asked me what lesson I learned on this day I told her that whoever made the rules way way way back when was either drunk or on high cause nothing made sense but now after watching this it makes a lot more sense. Ps. I’m still trying to understand what the 2nd lesson was and my teacher is on lesson number 6 so this video is super helpful so I don’t have a meltdown in class. 😂
@@DrTrefor Imo, It's very good. Book is Giant, about 1000 pages and all basics included with problems to solve at the end of each chapter. The title is "Discrete Mathematics and it's applications". My teacher had told me to study by this book previous semester, but I started to read it only month ago😅
The sound is bad = true
Use headphones for better experience
The video is made 7 years ago = true
Hhhh u are so funny

excellent observation!
Fantastic! That made so much sense, thank you
That's why I like UnrealEd more than Hammer or Quake editor.
Very helpful.
“ How do we deal with this but hanging around here”. Lmao

Thanks does that mean yes? 😊
What if it's p^~p, would it be 'my shirt is not gray but my shirt is not gray'm
yep, and that would be false because your shirt cannot be gray and not gray at the same time.
how did he grow his beard out so quickly~
Anybody notice instead of true or false, it says true or false?
I dont see the difference?
Did you just get super good at writing backwards or something. by the way these videos are awesome and super helpful
I was wondering the same thing
It’s actually a mirror image
Flipped in editing
He's using a lightboard
Jeffrey Kaplan on TH-cam has a video explaining how he does exactly the same thing
Regular sentences are now ruined with math! NOOOOO!! (jk I use those a lot in programming)

@@DrTrefor Thanks so much for the reply! You are my hero! Great lessons so far as well.

This class should be a general education requirement.

It is crazy impressive how he's writing on the glass.
Is noone else noticing how fluidly Dr. Bazett can write backwards? That is the most impressive thing I swear.
The video is most likely flipped around 😅
5:29 lol
5:49 LOL
I am a child, yes
Wtf you are so helpful. I am in sixth grade and I’m literally learning high school/college math! Thank you so much.
nice videos i will start to watch all your videos from today
His shirt is green.
not false
Fantastic! That made so much sense, thank you
We’re making *absolutely sure* that five is greater than two
Guys hes writing the eight way, he just flipped the video twice
Great tutorial found on TH-cam
it finally clicked... thanks Dr. B
Hi Dr. Are these under a specific playlist on your page?
i hate school thiss is true
I got a grate come
back now I have
I have a Question.
if x>2 is not a statement....then what exactly is it ?
is there a term to describe what it is ?
You right... It should be a statement because it is either true or false... That is what a statement is all about. If we hv to put value, then only can be a statement...?
If we put a value to x for x>2, then it will become either a tautology or a contradiction... There is no more either true or false... Example:

If we build the truth table for this statement, there are 2 possibilities. This is a statement is all about... A statement is not about it must be true or must be false. I agree with you
you must know first that x has no value ... so its not true or false...
the answer would be like this “ maybe "

How did u make this type of video. Which app did u use
My shirt is black not
But and And are like either and neither in this context. It is a signpost for an upcoming negation.

The sound is APPAULING. Start over and just dub the video.
In amazed by how he WRITE backward and having a better hand writing than md
haha either that or I flip it on my computer:D
Nooo you don't ! 😂😂
Thanks for making me interested in mathematics sir!
Sir I am a new teacher and i want to prepare an accurate course, can you please suggest a reference in the topic for me. Thanks a lot.
is he writing backwards that well or is he using a mirror?
Wonderful
Should be teaching at UBC fr :( missed out on a great teacher
Is this the first section mathematical statements or logic section?
🔥🔥🔥
Can't understand you, too much echo!
What technology do you use?
It looks like you are writing on the glass.
I am! It is called a lightboard.
What do you think about Kenneth_H_Rosen's book about discrete math?
