Franklin not being a mutant recon and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch not being Magneto's kids were the worst recons ever.
WITH YOU WHEN YOUR RIGHT. BUT NIGHTCRAWLER HAS ENTERED THE CHAT😪
100%
Some of the most blatant "character becoming relevant in other media, attach them to a more valuable IP" crap Marvel has done lmao which is why it's hilarious seeing them do the opposite with Kamala Khan now that X-men are popular and inhumans series flopped.
Eh magneto adopting them is fine 🤷🏽 Franklin not being a mutant is fine but I will say it was a SUPER weak way they retconned it.
Preach !
The twins not being Magneto’s kids was dumb
All because Disney wanted to remove any link between MCU characters and the X-men/mutants.
Wait, they're not his kids anymore? When did that happen?
To be fair, their being his kids was a retcon in the first place.
@@waltascherYes, but it was such a good retcon that led to years of great comic book drama and a great sub-plot in the one season wonder Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon.
@@seantaylor424 It was during Axis. Scarlet witch got her morality swapped in the inversion spell. She casted a spell that ended up revealing her and quicksilver don't share blood with Magneto.
The worse retcon was nightcrawler teleporting back into life from the afterlife.
How is that a retcon isn't that just a thing that happened?
You missed biggest retcon injustice - the Maximoff twins not being Magneto’s! First, this was done only to cut their link to the X-men, since they were owned by Fox and not Disney. Second, it cut one of the best family trees in Marvel. Third, consider the possibilities it could have brought to the MCU! The surest way to connect the new X-men franchise to the well established Avengers franchise. I hope they ignore this retcon when introducing Magneto to the MCU!
they mentioned something in one of the xmen movies quick silver was in. he was talking to someone who mentioned magneto talking how how he could manipulate metal then quicksilver said something along the lines of "my mother told me she dated someone who could control metal before i was born"
@@Mellowedpanda7that was in days of future past. in the fox xmen--it was xmen apocolypse he is established as magneto's son. they also brought the actor who played quicksilver in the xmen movies onto WandaVision to eff with the fans. I am sure they are gonna go with the "variant" stuff and have a marvel version of "crisis of infinite earths" to tie everyone together.
@joshmakeitrite in the Rogue cut of that movie, when Pietro is introduced, he's watching TV with his little sister and you hear their mom yell "Lorna, I need Pietro. So bug your sister upstairs!" To which Lorna replies "She bugs ME!"
Thus making all of Magneto's kids present and accounted for. Well....except for Anya whom FOX decided to make the youngest instead of the oldest.
Doesn't mean the MCU has to follow this dumb idea.
Xavier started out morally dubious. In the original run he made a back room deal with the government that was hunting then basically agreeing to turn over the more extreme mutants in exchange for getting information on some of the younger ones.
Before cerebro, it was the United States government that gave Xavier the location of new mutants like Cyclops.
IS it dubious, though? Up to that point, the only other mutants he'd met were Magneto, Jean Grey and Shadow King. And from those encounters, he would surmise that older mutants may be driven mad with power or become abusive of their powers and unwilling to change. But younger kids can be helped.
@@jerfuhrer2581 yes. It is still dubious. His morality is not to be relied upon. The real world analogy would be something like the Red Scare where people were turning over suspected Communists, the Secret Police of said Communists, the NAZI SS child soldiers, and many others.
He works with the people who go on to create sentinels, etc and provides them with information to capture mutants to take to genosha etc.
Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants were evil allegorical genocidal Zionists but that didn't make all mutants evil.
I don't disagree with your point, per se, but Chuck still compromises his morals in this deal and feels guilty about it later iirc. That's a pretty good example of moral doubt.
It really depends on when he first met Moira and when her son Kevin was born and how long Muir island has been ‘studying’ mutants.
Xavier making a deal with the US government was well established, but how much he knew about what the government was doing to mutants is unclear. It’s all pretty shady, but the whole deadly Genesis was too far. Also why only include the 4 when at least Maddrox was also present at Muir with Vulcan and company. Xavier was later recruiting Banshee and Sunfire, but I suppose it didn’t occur to him to use seasoned mutants and go with a team of rookies? There’s lots of plot holes in Morrison’s quest to ruin Xavier’s character.
In the beginning X-Men was all about Xavier competing with Magneto to find the most mutants.
Gotta catch em all.@@deadpilled2942
The Xorn thing is so utterly bonkers.
The whole Xorn thing is probably my least favorite thing from the comics
It was deliberate character assassination. Grant Morrison thought Magneto was a "mad old terrorist twat" I believe it was and used his position as writer to prove it. To be fair in pre-Claremont X-men this... isn't untrue. All the moral ambiguity came later, and we just sort of glaze over it. Of course, the fans much prefer the romanticized morally grey Magneto and Marvel duly listened.
I was today years old when I learned that retcon is short for retroactive continuity
True. Though if it was in a dictionary, the definition #2 would probably be "A story element that someone doesn't like." haha
If we all collectively ignore certain retcons eventually they’ll probably go back to how it was before
I think Ice Man, and Franklin Richards will prove you right.
Not if the characters are popular enough. Or are regularly featured in the books.
Conversely, I think a different Wolverine retcon is the _best_ retcon I know of. Namely, that the X in Weapon X is actually the roman numeral for ten. It's a very minor change - written down, there's nothing to distinguish "Weapon Eks" from "Weapon Ten" - but it gave a lot of new context. It also allowed them to introduce new characters like X-23 in a way that connected them to long-standing events in the franchise.
My man. Who hasn't slept with mystique? Pretty sure once a month when the wife goes crazy.....it's mystique.
What's the comic where mystique puts on Jean, and he goes " no I knew".
Mystique was first of all born a boy. Second of all the hermaphroditic mutant that presents as female has in canon pretended to be a man and woman and gRaped many many many people
Also is a deadbeat mother and father.
This is 100% canon.
@incognit01233 yea I didn't say anything about her sex. I said she's slept with everyone. Man ,female ,whatever. I got the wife. Someone else may have a husband who seems different today. Or whoever. It's a joke
What about Wanda and Pietro not being Magneto’s kids?
Yes!!!!! I hate that since it’s just an MCU related decision
Them being Magneto’s kids was a retcon in the first place.
@@russellharrell2747he did sleep with their mom
I also thought the Wolverine bone claws were a good idea but it always bothered me a bit just because I remember an old Marvel trading card that detailed how Wolverine had to have his claws removed for sharpening once a year.
The Xmen is just pure Ret con right now, ther is not a single character that hasn't got a retcon.
They need to return to theur original roots. Especially beast. Complete character assassination
@@frankieseward8667 So..another retcon??
@@22espec either that or a reboot
jubilee
What I hate about Nightcrawler being Azazel's son (even though that was retconned too thankfully) is that it ruined one of the most iconic moments in "god loves man kills" where Nightcrawler's humanity is questioned, basically proving Stryker right.
Apparently now not even Azazel’s writer who created likes him either. Chuck Austen either hates him now, or just wishes he did it all differently.
Yep plus tbh I don't like both retcons to nightcrawler's upbringing..
I know mystique is a villain but I much perfered her running away from possibly getting killed by someone who might not be that kind towards mutants other than her getting pregnant by one like azazel or being the one to impregnate someone while using her powers to be azazel..
Nightcrawler's birth has been retconned again. His parents are now Destiny (mother) and Mystique (father) which was what they originally wanted his origin to be
It's because they are finally doing the original plotline that Chris wanted which was Destiny and Mystique as a couple. Let's be real that couple is one of the best marvel couples because of their unconditional for each other. It's a lgbt relationship done right. I hate Shatterstar and rictor
Yeah, but unfortunately that retcon is going to be retconned in a few years. Because…….reasons……
@@MakuraZalis GROSS AND BLASPHEMOUS
AWESOME!
@@florinaslan5482 If that's your reaction, X-Men might be too progressive for you.
I can’t believe that Jean retconned Bobby iceman drake to be gay.
Looking back now I kinda prefer they idea of wolverines claws being surgically implanted, or at least his bone claws being ripped out and replaced, them being coated in it doesn’t really make sense given the way they look compared to his bone ones, plus it makes his experimentation and torture a little more horrific
Gay iceman doesn't count as a retcon?
Not really. You may as well say that it's a "retcon" any time a character is confirmed to be het. A closeted gay or bi man who hides it, even from himself, and covers it up with a slightly exaggerated "ladies man" persona while sitll having a lack of actual relationships seems quite plausible.
It wasn't really a retcon. Jean wanted a gay friend, and just brainwashed Bobby into being the gay friend. It isn't a retcon when there is a culprit.
I guess a lot of womanizer comming out later in life as a gay man irl kinda cover it
It totally is.
It’s just lazy writing
Some of these I hate so much that I do not accept as canon despite what Marvel tries to push.
Yep like the maximoff twin not being Magneto's children
Hear hear!
Guys.... Stay up to date
Top 10 nerd should have the right origin for nightcrawler
Of the 2 mothers?
Mystique is Kurt's father.
Actually, the "new" origin was the one Chris Claremont wanted for him back in the 90s, but Marvel nixed the idea. I remember a friend talking about it back in high school.
@@AustynSN Christ Claremont originally wanted Nightmare to be Nightcrawler's father, so we should go go that ragher than having 2 moms.
@AustynSN yeah comics code was a thing back then. Works today.
The Phoenix retcon is the worst retcon in Marvel Comics history.
There's also at least two different times where Wolverine was just . . . not a human for some reason. Plus, the retcon done in the Ultimates universe of what mutants are definitely should have been on the list.
The Ultimates universe is a lawless place. I try not to worry too much about what goes on over there.
It's also funny to me (as a Canadian) that some writers/editors keep trying to retcon Wolverine as being American, but the backlash is always too strong.
This video does a great job of showing why I hate Marvel/DC comics compared to manga or comics from other companies who have a start and end. This whole undoing them redoing each others work from different creators. It makes everything such a pointless story.
Same
It's a serialised property that's being going on for 60 years it's unavoidable
@@Temujin18S true, and I think it’s a flawed design for my taste. Stories need to have a goal, in atleast my taste which is why after a few cycles I moved along from it. And just wanted to say seeing this video highlights that problem.
Build a world and the stories can keep coming. Build a franchise one a single character and you will grow stale.
I need to read X-Men Deadly Genesis because it introduced Cyclops's third brother, Gabriel Summers AKA Vulcan. Who becomes an Omega level villain by seizing control of the Shi'ar Empire during Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire and Becoming Emperor in X-Men: Emperor Vulcan. He then went to war with the Inhumans in War of Kings.
Is it just me, or does every single X-Man eventually get listed as an Omega-level mutant?
The Wolverine Retcon is horrible and ridiculous.
Was worse than that, however, is the character went from a deadly killer level, brawler into the most skilled fighter ever . This is all due to popularity syndrome.
in my head-cannon Wolverine will never have a complete history. The Joker and he are not allowed to have it.
Hey, popularity syndrome made him the dad of the X-Men. I have no issue with this.
@@tzvikrasner6073 i have every issue with this
@@joshmakeitrite Or Deadpool
Yep I read his whole run of solo comics in the 80s before his bone claws and origin. He was so much cooler as a warrior with no past who'd been turned into a living weapon despite his natural power to heal being purely defensive.
TFW the presenter is just reading a script and is unfamiliar with the material.
What? Content farms just have people reading scripts? Never.
I liked the Wolverine's claws retcons, but it was well established before that he didn't have bone claws.
Most notably, Rogue absorbed his powers several times, no claws.
After that storyline, then she got claws.
I still hate the bone claws. But not as much as magneto being able to affect adamantium to the point of removing it from wolvie’s skeleton. It just should not have been possible.
It had long been established that Wolverine was supposed to be an expert with a bunch of different types of weapons. It would have been far more interesting to have him pick up a sword or some punch daggers or some sort of complicated multiweapon built by Forge than to just give him bone claws.
@@russellharrell2747 Honestly I don't mind the bone claws and I thought it was cool addition to Wolverine's powers, but yeah I get why not liking the idea of Magneto being powerful enough to rip all of the adamantium off of Wolverine's skeleton.
@@russellharrell2747 Peter David pitched it as a joke during a brainstorming session, and it probably should have stayed in the room.
@@daviddalrymple2284 oh. I wonder what they had rejected during that session.
Wolverine should have never got an actual origin. He was better as a mystery.
Loved this!!
Wolverine retcon was dumb all they had to do was say his body got accustomed to the claws so it created bone ones
That’s way dumber. That’s like all the superheroes (such as Black Lightning) who started out using technology but then later realized they have the powers naturally because they “absorbed” them from the technology. Because that’s how bodies work, right? I’ve been using a remote control my whole life so I can change the channel with my mind now.
@@waltascher are you a mutant with a super healing ability??
@@calypso Healing doesn’t grow new body parts; healing replaces existing body parts.
@@waltascher it's a comic book you clown, you can take some liberties and would not have retconed the canon
@@waltascherhis body and healing factor were in overdrive attempted to cope with the sudden loss of the adamantium. I’d totally buy it TFA this body grew bone claws in response to losing the implanted claws.
The first one very much sounds like a case of two writers wanting to go different directions with the same story and then settling that by one upping each other with their retcons.
Never knew the origin of the term “retcon” so I’ve learned something new within 5 seconds of the video starting
Nightcrawlers paternity was recently retconned again. 😅
Wait wait wait Wolverines retcon is him having the clause or any metal in the original hulk comic that he is introduced it’s just gloves with knives and his only power was regeneration that’s it
Please update this with the latest Retcon for Night Crawler
They should have just said his healing factor generated claws after having them in for so long his body was used to that space. Without having to do any retcons
That would have been a much better route to go.
Now Mystique and Destiny are Nightcrawlers parents which I love!
I read Children's Crusade. And the retcon was not well received by the CHARACTERS. Like even the Young Avengers, and just everyone present were like "How would that even have worked Doom? It all took place in an alternate timeline?"
And then Doom, who had just been given a smack down, basically argued that since he is Doom nothing is beyond his ability to orchestrate, which is pretty fair. But that isn't evidence. I think I remember most of the characters leaving thinking "Its kinda sad how he has to make himself the center of attention."
I don't think that it was even a retcon. Like even Wanda was like "Uh, no you didn't. That was my f**k up."
One of the most messed up retcons that they did was given wolverine bone claws. It was established over and over and over again that they were bionic, and by giving him bone claws, well, was just lazy writng. They didn't want to give him a real background so they had to give him one before the weapon x program where he still had claws. I think it would have been better to show a Logan throughout the centuries with no claws but using his hands his mind and his skills the carve his destiny.
I have always hated the bone claws
The newest retcon to Nightcrawler's backstory is that Mystique is the father and took the form of a man with Azazel's characteristics and that's why he looks that way. The mother is another mutant and current girlfriend of Mystique, Destiny. All of this also has much more drama and was erased from their minds by Xavier, at their request, but now they've remembered everything.
Fanfiction's are better job than Comic Books?
Ice Man was a total Ladys man with tons of girlfriends
and then they made him gay and said oh he was faking it the whole time 😂😂
they could have just created a new gay character if that’s what they wanted
"Decimate" has a *specific* meaning I encourage anyone reading this to look up.
I always hated the Wolverine-has-real-claws thing. From a strictly evolutionary point of view, does this design even make sense?!? Can you imagine if your pet cat literally had to pierce her/his little paws to unsheathe her/his claws? Your house would be covered in blood, and the cat would hate life. Imagine having super sharp fangs hidden away in your head, and the only way to use them is to have them sprout out from your damned gums. Like, "Hold on-- I do want to bite you. But... this just hurts a little. Give me a minute. Oh, and sorry about the blood."
Much better is how it was-- the Weapon X people find some dude with a ridiculous healing factor and heightened senses, etc. They take him in and lace his bones with adamantium so he's sort of unbreakable. And then, since he's a spy/covert ops guy, instead of giving him a knife or sword, you just put blades that extend out of his forarms. Will it hurt/bleed? Sure. For a minute. But he's tough and has that healing factor, so no big deal.
For me, way better than this retcon.
There is actually a species of frog that does that. Called the "Hairy Frog", or "Wolverine frog". It's pretty cool. It breaks it's own bones to pierce its skin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_frog
The bone claws made sense to be retconned. Because he would have needed to have the musculature existing in order to sheath and unsheath the claws. If they were just implanted in his arm during the Weapon X project then he wouldn't be able to move them.
Happy Friday.
Wolverine's claws were NOT added by the project. In the original "origin" of Wolverine, the claws were a surprise to the scientists too. I think retconning him to be Sabertooth's brother is worse than the bone claws.
No one even considers the retcon of Wanda and Pietro, because they were Magneto's kids since 1964, therefore a retcon of 2015 has no effect on people's memory that much.
One recon that no one ever talks about is the destruction of Genesho by Xavier’s’ sister Cassandra Nova. At some point the story became that humans destroyed Genosho.
The Rogue×Sentry one isn't really a Retcon, as much as just a weird way to disseminate that detail.
Franklin Richards has been Saturday-morning-cartooning the whole MCU.
It was all a dream...by a little kid. Ugh.
Reality warping at it again. Whole 70s-now MCU comics...all a kid's plaything.
Franklin definitely has been messing with earth 616. Spider-Man had been aging roughy one year for every year of real world time, until Franklin was born. Then all the sudden everyone slowed their aging to one year every 5 or 10 years, or less.
A good list about why more and more ppl dont pay to read watch or play anything Marvel
Both Morrison’s story and the Xorn retcon really fail to make sense in the context of many, many Xorn moments. Like him being a prisoner for decades and the issue where he uses his healing powers to help that Bull monster.
Liquid Hot Magma
night crawler being the son of azazel and mystique makes sense but then they retconned that again where mystique is the father
Writer are get more idiots?
Which was the actual origin.
Woke
Nightcrawler is now the son of Destiny and Mystique.
Yeah....you need to update that nightcrawler update
Ιf the X-Men still hated Wanda after the revelation that Dr Doom manipulated her to cause the Decimation and yet gave many members of their roster a free pass then they are all hypocrites.
The sentry himself is a big retcon... Everyting about his past is a retcon
Him saying he actually likes this change, while wolverine was in the background scared me in a way inexplicably able to describe. I was right, look behind you he has NO NOSE!!!
Optic blasts. Plain and simple.
Don't forge that the Azezal plot was retconned again earlier this year! Nightcrawler is now the child of Mystique (Father) and Destiny. Which was one of the story beats that had wanted to do in the 80s, but could not due to the comic code and censorship.
Dumb as hell, ruins all 4 characters
@@murk4552 Why?
Just so they could make Mystique trans now.
@@vetreas366 because they redefine Mystique's powers AGAIN and jump so many hoops to justify her powers working this way in this particular instance and not every other instance. They could have just made Destiny and Mystique a couple that's has a open relationship and Mystique not caring too much about birth control and it would be more line with previous canon because people seems to forgot that one of Mystique go-to methods during a covert op is to sleep with either target or someone close to them.
@@dannyharrell4818Mutant powers are changed all the time, by doing this they actually move Mystique to Omega level..
Nightcrawlers "Dad" is now Mystique and his mother is Destiny.
Bishop’s actions in the messiah complex made total sense with his childhood traumas and the circumstances of the mutant race at the time. The demon bear thing is the actual disappointment of a retcon.
The nevó Rome retcon might’ve been partially done to retcon Magma doing black face in that issue.
Nightcrawler's been re-retconned too. Azazel isn't his dad anymore. Mystique is his dad. Destiny is his mom.
Bishop was always morally dubious. He basically caused AoA.
So......wheres beast
Aka. Beasteality
This entire list could simply have been two words: Hickman run
Wait they made Dr. Doom responsoble for Wanda doing that? How on earth did they make that make sense so they basically made all of House of M like what an elaborate cover story?
So if you've got no problem with Wolverine's claws being bone, WHY did you add it to your worst list?
Is the Rouge thing really a retcon? Just seems more like an added detail thay would kind of make sense since Rouge has always wanted to be able to touch someone so yeah given the chance I would see her taking it
I’m pretty sure they changed the nightcrawler birth again, mystique shapeshifted into a man and impregnated someone, making her the dad, but this was very recently revealed
I would add Beast turning evil in the current X-Force series.
Franklin Richards not being a mutant
Scarlet Witch and Quick Silver not being Magnetos kids
Iceman being secretly gay (not homophobic, the whole thing was done in poor taste)
Retconning Azazel from being Nightcrawlers dad.
Bishops heel turn
2 Xorns
Phoenix not being really Jean
Would be my personal list of most hated retcons.
Sup!
Nightcrawler was Mystique and Destiney's kid.
I blame Marvel's editorial bullpen for not being thorough
If they were decimated, most of them survived. Only one in ten was killed.
I read page on Facebook where they change again Kurt origin (and stick with previous idea). So mystique’s her daddy (not mother) and destiny her true mother.
I feel some of those aren't retcons so much as reveals.
One retcon i didn't like is a Psychic telling iceman he was gay, and then he became gay, no arc, no self discovery, no motivation of possible iceman crushes of his story that he keeped for himself, no, he became gay as a flip of a button as the homophobic ones wanted to flip the homosexuals to heterosexuals telling they needed to be "cured" in the past...
... and Nightcrawlers origin was changed yet again as I type this :-(
They changed Kurt's origin again to where now he is the son of Mystique and Destiny.
And Kurt's parentage has been altered again, so Mystique is now his father and a random Human Woman is his mother. Who gave birth on her hands and knees.
1:13 oh my gosh, this is sol like a collaborative writing project where one writer tries to bering a story in a different direction ornly to be brought bak in the original direction when the original writier takes over. akak when JJ abrams is brought back cos johnson messed things up.
Prof. X is Nightcrawler's step-dad and technically Uncle of the Summers brothers. Their mom got with D'ken and Charles got with Llandra
See, I can't even tell if you're joking or not...😂
You also didn't finish the parentage of Nightcrawler, which was found out to be Destiny was his mother, while Mystique was his father. Mystique then faked her pregnancy by using her shape shifting and we learned that her powers changed at a biological level as well. Meaning, she could be both female and male.
Yeah, I hate that too. Give me back the old, old version where his dad is just some Austrian baron dude with no powers. It's quicker, cleaner and keeps the roulette settings of manifesting mutant powers. Also, it's more fun as one of his parents is a human.
You're out of date on Nightcrawler's parentage retcons. His mom is destiny and his other mom/biological father is Mystique.
Funny how nightcrawlers dad has been retconed again
Marvel Movie Watchers: What's with Marvel these days?! They're retconning everything and none of the consequences stick!
Marvel Comic Book Readers: First time?
"decimated"
So a 5-mutant team means... one of them was half-killed?
Grant Morrison's run on the New X-Men and X-Men were so good. I was annoyed when they retconned some of his plot points, but that just how the cookie crumbles in the comic world, especially with properties like X-Men.
I liked that run but hated the art style so i stopped reading. Everyone had smushed baby faces.
Iceman being gay is the worst X-Men retcon
Spiderman getting SA?
Bobby being gay is the worst. We all know it. It makes no sense.
Laziest and most pointless. Made no sense jean could be around him for decades and not know but then all of a sudden sense it.
10:02 read New X-Men #127 and tell me how that's Magneto.
No gay iceman? Or non mutant Maximoff twins?
You sound like Sokka
