    Anna, I have had your videos on a continuous loop for about three days now getting my courage up to grab my knitting machine and get started. This video is the one that’s making me want to get that standard Vintage Knitting Machine out and get busy. I’ve seen this sock done as a hand knitting project that allows you to take off the sole of the sock and replace it when it wears out. with a Knitting machine who cares! You can just knit another one so fast

    • @glutenfreeappletree
      @glutenfreeappletree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AnnaHaferman I have a booklet that explains this technique and the ribbing is done first, then knit the sock to the heel, the short row heel, the sole, short row toe, sew-as-you-go to the top, but.....ribbing on that part is not attached, so there would be hand sewing the side seams for the ribbing. The ribbing is latch tool up after dropping the stitches, depending on 1x1, 1x3, or whatever ribbing is desired.

      @@AnnaHaferman I plan to get my machine back out in a couple weeks to practice this. I do want to do a 1/2 inch 2x rib cuff and wondered if you had feedback for attempting a manual adjusted machine stitch or taking the sock off and knitting the rib?

      I'm very much a beginner with the machine.

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with the sew-as-you-go is how to start and end it. Because it's a tube when finished, you have to figure out a way to get the beginning and ending to match. You could start with ribbing and then end with it but it won't look exactly the same. You could also start with waste yarn and end with waste yarn and then pick up all the stitches on hand knitting needles and knit the ribbing that way. You could also do it with mock ribbing like in this video: th-cam.com/video/qiiLSKZNt3I/w-d-xo.html

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try a practice slipper first. Take some yarn you don't care too much about and just try to get through the pattern. Don't worry about mistakes and don't spend a whole lot of time trying to fix mistakes and re-wind yarn.

    How do I work out the short row for the toes the heel and amount of stitches and rows to knit custom socks

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You would have to do a swatch and measure the person's feet. The short rows for the heels and toes are just the number of stitches divided into thirds. The tricky part is the number of stitches for the soles because the bottom of the heel and toe makes up some of the length of the sole.

    PS I didn't realise you have such small feet! I take a 9 1/5. How many stitches would that be, I wonder.

    How do you know exactly which tension to use for your projects?

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually say what tension I used in the project, so if you use a similar weight yarn you should get roughly the same result. I suggest making a test sock first.

    I'm following the video verbatim. My stuff keeps falling off the needles. I'm too the point of screaming now after doing it over n over again, so I'm gonna call it a night and go to bed. I have the loveliest soft baby blue yarn, too.

      Sorry you’re having trouble. Make sure you’re weighting it down really well. What machine are you using?

  • @madeby_th
    @madeby_th ปีที่แล้ว

    What does the hold mean? I have a bond so Im just trying to understand what that means on my machine

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you just pull the needle to hold- all the way to the rail. There are no levers on your carriage but it will know to hold the needle-ie not knit that stitch. I’m not exactly sure how you put them back into working position on the Bond. You should try asking in one of the Bond knitting machine groups.

    Hello, is this seaming technique supposed to have holes on both sides of the seam with each stitch when it stretches?

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The seam itself will look kind of zig-zaggy and when you stretch it, it will look like holes. If it's too stretched out when you're wearing it, experiment with sizes. You can alter the number of stitches you cast on- just remember to go down to thirds when short-rowing. You can also add more rows to the sole of the foot.

    • @LifeofAms
      @LifeofAms 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnnaHaferman Oh interesting, thank you! Mine came out looking like slightly larger stockinette. I was playing with the seam and realized it’s holey on both sides when I stretch it width wise. I’ve been retrying test pieces. I’ll have to try again.

      Hi Else! I have most of them in the community section of my TH-cam channel. It's set up so that channel members have access to the written directions. You would have to join my channel which is $1.99 a month (cancel anytime.) It's only for the size in the video.

    When I try to hold my stitches to make the heel, they don't look the same as yours! I'm wrapping it the same way you are, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I have a Brother KX-350, and I turn it to H on both sides at that step.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Without seeing what’s going on, it’s hard to say what’s happening. My advice is to try it a couple times with some waste yarn. Just cast on 21 stitches, knit a couple of rows plain and then make a heel following the steps closely.

    • @kasparhorsfield890
      @kasparhorsfield890 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnnaHaferman I'll give that a shot!
      In the best way I can describe it, your stitches for the heel look like any other, fully wrapped around the needles, similarly to how it looks when you cast on with the "e" method! On my machine, once the carriage goes over it, it looks like it's looped over multiple needles, even though I'm doing the wrap after each one. When I took it off to restart, those sections were very loose and the loops were wide.
      I hope that provides some more clarification!
      Thanks!

    • @AnnaHaferman
      @AnnaHaferman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you wrapping only one needle at a time? Are you pulling the yarn under rather than over?
