    "As long as Dell offers new hardware modules for sale..." - I suddenly heard a thousand Area 51m owners screaming into the void of broken promises.

  • @MW-mn1el
    @MW-mn1el ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Concept Luna is fantastic, even trade off is make chassis slightly bigger. Modularity, flexibility, repairability and upgradeability is more important in the long run. They should make it an actual product like Framework did.

    • @hikarishikawa
      @hikarishikawa ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Worst thing is that dell has a reputation for not supporting their proprietary hardware. Like the Area 51 which was supposed to have upgradable graphics modules but they never supported it.
      Nonetheless it does look very good and impressively sleek, makes you question why some many 14 inch laptops don’t even have upgradable ram.

    • @IonorRea
      @IonorRea ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hikarishikawa Considering that people tend to keep Apple laptops for 7 years and the amount of wear you accumulate on such devices if taken to school or work often, I have my doubts about upgradable 14-15,6 inch laptops like Framework if they will cost significantly more, or like in case of last Alienware upgradable laptop they may not keep supporting it for very long, which means that likely at beginning there will be no large interest due lack of trust in company support, and because of that, support for potential upgrades end.
      The question is if you can make upgradable laptops widely attractive without opening architecture to other manufacturers that can then also produce parts, thus, in consequence, creating industry-accepted laptop case standards for various sizes as we see in desktops. While I understand that manufacturers want to keep their upgradable laptops proprietary, so only they make money on upgrades, it greatly reduces the attractiveness of such products in the early years when there is no certainty that such laptops will keep being supported.
      Where I see the potential for upgradable laptops is in thin display bezel 18" laptops in size of older thick bezel 17,3" laptops as desktop replacement computers for people that not want to lug around desktops like students, truckers, or working people living in small rented apartments that may need to move often yet wanting to do long hours behind computer which is eye straining with small screen laptops. I upgraded my 2014 Alienware 18 laptop with a larger SSD and replaced the GeForce GTX 770M SLI with the GeForce 980M upgrade package from Eurocom as Dell did not offer such option which would be for many inexperienced users viable even if they need to pay Dell technician for installation, as it will be still cheaper than buying a new laptop.
      Currently, there is for example 14" Toughbook FZ-55 Mark II with a ridiculous amount of battery life with multiple hot-swappable bays for battery yet with weight only passing 2kg on one battery which is not that lot for a semi-rugged laptop with a high degree of EASY modular upgradability often not requiring opening laptop at all including Blu-Ray writer, or GPU alternative in the same bay, alternative ports module and so on...
      Unfortunately, the high brightness screen is meant for outdoor, not color accuracy, so not exactly average consumer oriented but if they make this design more consumer-oriented with upgrade support for CPU/motherboard and make purchases more consumer-friendly, perhaps they can gain a larger market for people needing nowadays special features like hot-swappable batteries, Blu-Ray writter, or smart card/wireless ID reader.
      While I don't think that Panasonic currently has the infrastructure to build and service modular laptops for the masses, if a large manufacturer like Dell with the necessary infrastructure made an FZ-55 style modular bay upgradable desktop replacement laptop that can be easily upgradable by anyone in the form factor of older 17,3" laptops like ZBook 17 G6 you may get a lot of people that fear opening laptops to replace GPU interested...

    M18 is a massive fail as the 18 inch panels they use are still only 300 nits, while Asus and Razer have 500 to 1100 nit 16 and 18 inch panels. 300 is super dim and dull. I'm also disappointed that the 18 inch didn't come in the form of the X series. The X series build quality with an 18 inch mini led panel would have been perfection. The M series looks cheap.

    The occasional announcement video would be nice, especially if it covers a series of new devices and updates like this one did. I subscribed because of how your thoughts and usage of laptops closely matched my own. In the past few years, I felt like some of these AW devices were so close to being what I wanted in a laptop, but fell short in terms of non-gaming usability that ultimately had me returning a M15 r4. These updates are looking tempting though.

    I agree with you that most people who just want to have a gaming laptop sit on their desk won't care for the X series. But I'm not one of those people. I do research at university (master's student) and also work in cybersecurity. For me a thin & light laptop with a lot of performance is very important. I need to easily bring it around with me all the time. The ports on the back can be annoying but I do like the clean look when plugging in at my desk at home. For reference, I've had the x14 for about 6 months and love it. I think I will go for the x16 for the bigger screen though. I'm glad Alienware have two options (M series & X series) to offer different products for different needs. I do believe they need to stop treating the M series as a second class citizen and give it all the features (ex: speakers) from the X series.

    • @iphar
      @iphar ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you like the "clean look when plugging in at my desk at home", your best option is probably a dock station. 1 simple type C cable on any thunderbolt port and you're done. Make things so much easier if you take your laptop with you every day. Can change to any other Notebook in the future and the simplicity continues. There are great options in Laptop Stands that will help you de-clutter your desk as well.

      @@mikehawk120 Hi, Mike, we could probalby write a 4 page report on this subject and that would still risk not answering your question properly. The most important thing is for you to ask yourself a series of questions: how many and what kind of periferals will you be connecting? printer? speakers? hard drives? pen drives? ethernet? how fast are they? permanently or temporarily? how many simultaneously? is this about convenience or performance? how many monitors? what type of monitors? do I need PD (power delivery)? do I have a proper Thumderbolt port on my computer or just a regular USB-C port? how much am I willing to spend? etc.
      I personally use a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock from Lenovo, but there are much cheaper models available, depending very much so on your particular needs.

    In a perfect world, manufacturers create MXM (mobile PCIe Module) SKUs for this Project Luna. I'd love an insertable RTX A series GPU to get stuff done. I know a lot of people would like the option of adding a GPU rather than having to buy an entire laptop - especially when your current laptop is fine and only compromises in 1 or 2 areas.

    Hi Josh,
    I think if you went to the press event, and have already seen or touched the real product, please make the coverage video. It's very helpful, most people don't even have a chance, we only read the news or watch from the screen though. Your mom will be happy too, more VDOs, more like 🙂
    I pretty much agree with you on everything. I am surprised they improve the speaker, wow, now I want x16 🤣 Not sure why manufacturers ignore laptop speakers for so long, it should be one important aspect that people can tell. Especially in premium high-end laptops.
    You are right on the 4K screen option.
    I am using x17 R1 with 4K screen. I do reading, writing, coding, and programming a lot. The 4K screen is amazing, the text is really sharp and clean, it's much better when we need to work for a long time. I cannot go back to 1080p or even 2K anymore.
    However,
    I think it's fine for Dell to chase thin laptop designs though. Not everyone wants the highest performance. I am okay if my CPU/GPU runs 200-300 Mhz slower in a thin laptop. X-series is also their premium line, it must have an elegant sleek classy design. M-Series exists for people who want the best performance. Otherwise, X-series and M-series will be too close though.
    Thank you and Happy New Year 🙂

    Dude they are using 300 nit screens on 8000 dollar AUD laptops (M18 specced out). They have fixed the big issues and regressed to non HDR screens on even the 4090 models, meaning an instant "not even looking at it" for me. Asus, Razer and many more all offering 500+ nit HDR screens. Such a shame.
    MSI still refusing to use advanced optimus/g-sync, so they are out too.

My major concern is GPU-only compute load (such as Furmark) in balanced fan modes so I would love to see such tests of noise dB, speed then and noise samples. Announcement videos are fine. You just have to make sure that you've actually seen the product, and in your case, you did get to try and experience it. That way when announcing, there's your flair and flavour to the announcement, rather than just reading the specs off some sheet like some TH-camrs do, then hype it without having even seen the device up close. That way it does add MORE context to your full review, because you get to see what was in concept, and what made it to the final assembly for customers.

    Excellent video. Just one major problem with the x16. I own a x15r2, and one of my biggest complaints is the lack of 16:10 screen. So glad they’ve rectified this among other quality of life issues. However, the x16 is now 6 pounds? That’s almost a pound heavier than the (to me anyway) already heavy x15r2. As cool as the laptop is, it is just serving a different audience than the x15 was. But I don’t fancy bringing a 6 pound laptop to class every day. My discouragement with the m16 in my shopping now is I am seeing the screen underwhelm people, particularly in brightness and the lack of more keys (numpad). If I'm going to be spending above a thousand dollars on a laptop, I don't want to be skimping in anyway on my display, especially when simple monitors, often 21 inches or more that cost less than $150 can deliver 100% sRGB or DCI-P3. Why mid range gaming laptop makers cut corners on display experience is baffling.

    A couple things:
    1. Yes I would like to see more announcement videos. Most announcements out there are about hype or shilling a brand. I like your pragmatic and matter of fact takes. Plus it doesn’t detract any value from your normal videos.
    2. I’m one of those people who DO care about thinness because I travel a lot but still need a gpu for my cad work. Sometimes I travel with multiple devices so a thin and light is still really the only way for me. That being said, Alienware broke my heart with their displays. No oled or mini-led might be a dealbreaker for me
    3. Despite numerous efforts I’ve never seen a successful modular product, especially in the tech space. Partly because modular devices is something almost everyone agrees they want but in reality almost nobody buys them over competing devices and partly because So many devices become greater than the sum of their parts but by making it modular the device literally gets reduced to only the sum of its parts. Hi Josh, I think this is a great way to provide information to your audience. I have made a few purchasing decisions based on your reviews and I am looking at getting a gaming laptop sometime this year when I replace my desktop. Your use of the system is enough to gain an interest and look forward to your actual review.

      If you are looking for desktop replacements and that means performance above all, then My suggestion is a 2022 laptop and now would be the perfect time to get one. 2023 GPUs are not doing it with the price. The new gen intel CPUs and especially the 4000 series GPUs are not worth the power increase for their cost. The 2022 laptops have the best combo of GPU, CPU and features like the mux switch (or advanced Optimus) and hdmi 2.1 etc. The 3000 series GPU are well worth the price. And intel 12700h is fantastic with its power consumption and performance delivery.
      Since you wanted to go performance then that is why I suggested intel over AMD but if you want to go AMD then best amd CPU and GPU both are in 2022. Anything before 2021 is not recommended as certain features like mux switch were generally missing from most laptops.
      If you still want to go for something beyond 2022, then I suggest waiting for next gen of Nvidia graphics. There's a good reason people are skipping Nvidia this gen and even AMD GPUs to a good degree. The power consumption and performance delivery for that cost is just plain bad. It's heartbreaking to see such amazing laptop chassis like Alienware and ROG laptops be held back by such problematic internals.
      But then you will get into the hell hole of constantly waiting for the next great system because the current one is too problematic which is why I suggested to go with 2022 laptops. But, if you still want to go for 2023, at least wait till the year's end. By then stuff gets thoroughly tested and problems are exposed and companies improve their machines (which is the other reason why I suggested 2022 laptops because it's been a year since they were out).

    Does the new X16 turn off the LEDs and shut down the fans when you close the lid? That was an issue you have. Also, can it upload faster than 480 Mbps over a 1 Gbps connection, unlike Alienwares with Killer and Ethernet connections cannot? How about the pitch of the fan noise? I see usability of back connections is not solved. How warm does this get and how long does the battery on this last?
    I very much look forward to your review of the m16 and x16 as I replace my G16.

    I am ok with annocement, but best stick to review after weeks extended use. So manufactures don't cover up important detail that they don't want consumer to know. For laptop specific, windows laptops tend to hide their power consumption, noise level and battery life. 10 min - 2,3 hours hands on don't tell the real story in everyday use. Your sound in the new studio is great, even it's only half finish.

    I like these types of videos, specifically because you will be going over these models at a later time. I do have to disagree about the thinness argument. I like to game on the side but do travel for work. It’s hard to find thin laptops that are capable of excellent gaming. Let’s keep a few models around for people like us :). There are plenty of thick gaming laptops to choose from for most other people that have great thermals

    I'm interested in the x14 but only for the size for travel. My current rig is a dell g5 5500 and it has been a pile of garbage. it overheats so often I have to run a large fan base constantly, the plastic casing has warped, deformed, and broken. ports are loose... so afraid to buy another Dell. Definitely avoiding the G series forever. Cooling is now very important to me. I do play games, some of them are intense but I don't care if it's the absolute best graphics. It just needs to be reliable, durable and run stay cool. I also thought of getting an i5 instead of an i7 just to save money- some say the i5 will play my games just fine and be cooler, while others say I must have an i7. I don't know 😕

    How ridiculous that the flagship 18 isn't getting the new speaker setup. Typical Dell. I just don't understand why they aren't using the HDR panels that the other brands are using for their 16 and 18" 1600P panels. I could probably forgive the speakers if they did that.

    An x18 could tick all the boxes if its anything like the x16. Personally, the x17 r2 being out now for quite a while has become far more worth its price tag. Pity manufactuerers always are holding back to providing the flawless item the consumer expects/demands for reasons untold. Thanks, though, for the video. 👍

    I don't want a thicker laptop, because I just need a extra portable slim design game laptop to use everywhere, so the X14 or the Zephyrus G14 would be the laptop to buy for me, for normal desktop gaming I am using a RTX 4090.

  • @Jayremy89

    I hate laptop and phone company's obsession with thin products, most of us want better performance and don't care if a millimeter or few thicker is the consequence to having a:
    better performance
    better battery
    better cameras
    better cooling
    better durability
    better serviceability
    better keys/buttons
    better ports
    I doubt trading away all those to have something slightly thinner or lighter is worth it to >80% of people, especially performance and utility focused people.

    • @diegovillavicencio3172
      @diegovillavicencio3172 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I love it. I think it's great for editors who are using editing programs that needs high-powered GPU and CPU so we choose Alienware. This editing programs will get your laptop hot only for the seconds they're processing the edits you're doing, instead of games which makes the laptop hot for consecutive minutes or hours, so we don't need the laptop to be very thick for better air flow, even though the cooling system on the X17 R1 that I have is already the best one I've ever had on an Alienware, and on this X16 it will be even better with liquid metal and vapor chamber on both CPU and GPU. The 6 amazing speakers on the X16 makes it even more perfect for editors. I'm guessing gamers will go for the M16 or M18, but this X16 is by far the best one for editors imo. The only ridiculous thing is that it doesn't have removable RAM, they always find a way to screw it lol. Also the non-available 4K display but I believe they will offer it in the next months after the release

  • @RedBeardedRabbit
    @RedBeardedRabbit ปีที่แล้ว

    IMO Announcements are not worth the time; there's SO much of that on YT already. It also just feels like free ads for manufacturers where they get to hype up their models; besides, as your channel shows every time, a laptop is far more complicated than the sum of its spec sheet.
    Maybe ONLY if it doesn't take away from your regular content, which is valuable as you said because you actually USE the devices for some time and comment on usability.
