this is sci-fi doing what it does best, hold a mirror up to society and having it take a HARD look at itself! very glad you shared this CLASSIC with us! :-D
The forbidden zone and lake scenes were filmed around Lake Powell in Utah. The spaceship was a roadside attraction for about 40-50 years. I have a polaroid of me standing next to it.
The music for Planet of the Apes was composed by legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith, who would go on to win an Oscar for composing the music to The Omen, and also did the music for Patton, Alien, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Chinatown, Poltergeist, First Blood, Gremlins, Total Recall, and L.A. Confidential.
While I didn't quite love Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, I REALLY appreciated how the composer seemed to pay homage to the original the way he made the score emulate Goldsmith's music
Despite the success of this film, all the succeeding sequels suffered from reduced budgets (Hollywood being Hollywood), nevertheless Arthur P. Jacobs continued to push the story along against the odds to create one of the most interesting and compelling sci-fi franchises. The third film "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" and the follow up "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" really take a dark turn and bring the allegory of the original film full circle. They don't make 'em like this any more.
Those two movies are definitely the best of the sequels, and I think Conquest is a minor classic. All things considered, the other two movies, Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes, could be skipped without missing much. Though, Beneath has value to fans of '70s sci-fi schlock.
@@spencerbookman2523 Beneath is my favorite after the first, primarily due to General Ursus and his hat. 😁When it comes to hats in movies it gets a 10 out of 10.
I did not come along until 1971, so I never saw this at the theater, but my mom did. She was 19. But in my early childhood years, I saw this on TV, as well as the four subsequent films that followed this. There was also a live action series and an animated series, both short-lived. As a child, I found them entertaining but watching them as a teenager and later as an adult, I began to see deeper into the films and what they said about us. I still watch these movies every now and then; I have all five films in box set, which also includes a feature length retrospective documentary about the films and the different themes they explored. Linda Harrison, who played Nova, made her film debut with this movie. She would have a small role in the Cocoon movies that came out in the 80's and had a cameo in the 2001 Planet of the Apes film made by Tim Burton. I thought that one was okay; nothing to write home about. But I do love the newer films and the story arc in them.
When this movie was made over half a century ago the world seemed to be "on the brink" from the threat of nuclear war, pollution, etc. and we're still here. As Martha Gellhorn observed, humanity always seems to push itself to the precipice then pull back and survive.
This film is based on the 1963 novel _La Planète des singes_ by the French writer, Pierre Boulle. His novel _Le Pont de la rivière Kwaï_ had previously been made into one of the world's greatest films, _The Bridge on the River Kwai_ (1957). A great animated Sci-Fi film is _Fantastic Planet_ (1973). It is a French-language, experimental, Sci-Fi film. It is based on the 1957 novel _Oms en série_ by French writer Stefan Wul. "Fantastic Planet was awarded the Grand Prix special jury prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and in 2016, it was ranked the 36th greatest animated movie ever by Rolling Stone." If you've never seen Fritz Lang's Sci-Fi masterpiece, _Metropolis_ (1927) it's one you should definitely watch, for yourself if not for the channel. Another classic you should watch, if you've never seen it, is _Forbidden Planet_ (1956).
Before his turn as George Taylor in Planet of the Apes (1968), Charlton Heston was famous for playing Moses in The Ten Commandments (1956) and Judah Ben-Hur in Ben-Hur (1959). Ben-Hur features a killer chariot race. The Ten Commandments features the parting of the Red Sea. During that era Charlton Heston also starred in the film noir classic Touch of Evil (1958). He also reprises his role as George Taylor in Beneath the Planet (1970), the sequel and the best of the sequels, i.m.o. Charlton Heston also starred in another sci-fi classic, Soylent Green (1973), as well as in the zombie doomsday horror film The Omega Man (1971).
The water they landed in was salt water. That is why they got excited about the waterfall. Also, they were excited about the trees and vegetation they just didn't show you in the movie.
Very cool that you did the original. This one has always been my favorite. Our sun's name is Sol. Solis is Latin for sun. In the movie The Martian time units were called Sols for Solar days.
James Franciscus starred in the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes. When he was on the Tonight Show promoting the movie, he said that during filming, when they broke for lunch, all the humans sat together, the Chimpanzees sat together, and the Orangutans sat together.
Thanks for the great reaction, Belle! Planet of the Apes was based on a novel called Monkey Planet by Pierre Boulle. The story and the ending were quite different from the novel. In the book, Taylor (named Ulysse) and Nova escape the Monkey Planet and return to Earth, only to discover Earth has been taken over by intelligent apes. Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling co-wrote the screenplay for Planet of the Apes, and came up with the idea of having Taylor discover that he's been on Earth in the future the entire time, inspired by an old episode of The Twilight Zone that Serling had written called, 'I Shot an Arrow in the Air." In the episode, a group of astronauts who believe they have landed on a gigantic asteroid begin a desperate struggle for survival, leading to one crewmember killing his fellow crewmembers to conserve food and water. The lone survivor later wanders across the alien landscape to discover telephone poles and a rest stop, realizing to his horror that they had actually been in the Arizona desert on Earth the entire time.
That was so much fun! So happy you saw it! It opened the same day as "2001", can you believe it? They should call that International Sci-Fi Day! The other 70s movies are cheesy, the remake is cheesy, but from what I saw of the recent trilogy (which is all prequel material), that's worth watching for the channel. And there are callbacks to this movie, so you'll recognize them now! It's great you started with the original! This "Planet Of The Apes" is the only one I personally watch. The other profound, mindblowing, visually incredible sci-fi films that I love would be Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (Spielberg, 1977), Forbidden Planet (1954-ish), and from this century, "Ex Machina".

Charlton Heston wore a blanket in the animal hospital scenes because he had gone through poison ivy in a previous scene and had rashes all over his body.
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions He also had a cold during the filming of the chase scene which is why his voice is so horse when he talks for the first time.
Please watch all of the original sequels! 🙏 No one watches them! Even this one doesn’t get as much attention. And of course you gotta watch the reboot prequels, but those get enough deserved attention. The original sequels may not be as good, but they deserve their due! Burton’s reimagining can probably be left alone
The desert scenes were filmed in multiple locations of northern arizona, like near the Grand Canyon I think if he tried whispering it would just come out as nonsense hissings We actually do see Landon get knocked out from a hit on the head with a rifle during the hunt, so the skull fracture part could be true. Whether he was still able to talk before he was lobotomized is unclear, though kind of implied he could. There’s a novel where he couldn’t because of [SPOILERS]; and a comic where he could and gets beaten until his skull is fractured, requiring surgery to save his life as Zaius said
Well, I’m sorry. Having only seen this for the first time that day didn’t really know that was gonna be a great moment that you guys would hate to have been left out.
1. Ratings weren't all that back then. This was rated G. 2. NICE present man. 😍😈 3. See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil = Clueless apes (Except Dr. Zaius) 4. I was just a child when this came out and I was amazed at how well the main apes looked. 5. There was a very short lived (budget) tv series in the early 70s. 6. The next movie isn't as good. IMVHO "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" was the best. Cornelius and Zira go back to the early 70s. Ricardo Montauban is featured. 7. Dr. Zaius/Maurice Evans played Samantha Steven's warlock father in "Bewitched" 8. The scene with the deep canyon must have been for visual because only half of the party on one side doesn't make sense. 9. Charlton Hesston played in "The Omega Man" (early I am Legend) and "Soylent Green." Both of which are good first time/shares. 10. At the time, this was one of the best twist endings. NOTE: The difference between monkeys and apes is apes don't have tails.
It's really only this original ground breaking classic, & the first cgi RISE OF THE APES(which takes up the story before the Space mission) that are worth bothering with.

@ actually no because so much time has passed. Certain things like THE STATUE OF LIBERTY having to be restored a few times in 150 years. So I “buy” the talking apes over that.

I can’t “buy” the STATUE OF LIBERTY remaining intact that long because it’s needed serious upkeep in just 150 years.
Watching a psuedo intellect watch and intellegent movie was interesting. What you think you know about others is something that was told to you. For example, have you spoke with any Christians? I was raised as a Catholic and in paraochial school, we were taught evolution and all the sciences. Only the literalists take the bible literally. Most interpret itas a text for the ages and don't take it so literally. Unlike the Muslim faith which more literally believe the Koran, such as being rewarded with 72 virgins if they murder outside their faith. I have a good friend who is Muslim and he told me how the U.S. is lax in their punishments, such as if you are caught stealing in the Muslim world, they would chop off your hand as described in the Koran or being stoned for committing adultery as also described in the Koran, and other such corporal punishments.
One I’m not pretending to be smart, so please retract that statement. I grew up in a Pentecostal household. Both of my grandparents were preachers. And then spent many years after my mother remarried, attending a Baptist church. Spent a year going to a Catholic Church, Assembly of God, non denominational & seventh day Adventist. As well as studying religion and writing a paper on it in college. I myself do not see that I personally am the most genius when it comes to religion, but I do understand that there are differences. As of today after dealing with such controversial issues and not having the same opinions as Pentecostal, Assembly of God, Pentecostal, seventh day Adventist, Baptist, & seventh day, Judaism (dated a guy who really got pissed because how dare I order a pepperoni pizza) I just don’t see the point. I studied Greek mythology as well as studying the book of ankh and completely understanding the difference between Kemetism and Christianity. 🙄 In our household, we believe in paganism and follow it through, but also give our children the right to get educated regarding all religions and allowing them that right. So just because I talk country and have opinions regarding space travel and aliens & know many a “Christians” who refuse to believe in life outside of earth as well the the fact that dinosaurs don’t exist. That simply does not give you the right to basically call me “stupid” aka a pseudo intellect. 🙄 I watch these movies to have fun and to help battle my mental health issues and turds like you that think they honestly know everything about the person that they see on the screen just off of one minor statement are the viewers I never want on my channel. Have a great day..

Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it.
And thank you for all of the information information. I love reading all of the fun facts.
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions 😊 Thank you for reading it.
One of the best unexpected endings ever!
They blew it up!!!!!!
"He's about to ride that horse bareback, it's gonna be rough on his butthole"
I feel like that's a whole 'nother movie. 😳
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Charlton Heston wore a blanket in the animal hospital scenes because he had gone through poison ivy in a previous scene and had rashes all over his body.
Oh man, I know exactly what that feels like. That must’ve been horrible for him.
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions He also had a cold during the filming of the chase scene which is why his voice is so horse when he talks for the first time.
The movie was filmed at Lake Powell
Thank you for that information. Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it.
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions Lol, I'm an old fart. I saw this movie when I was a kid. #Iknowthings
The final scenes were filmed in Malibu.
Great reaction! Thanks.
A very excellent old science fiction movie that's only been reacted to a few times on TH-cam is ""The Time Machine" from 1960.
Thank you, Brandon. I wrote it down and I am looking it up.
Except the second one who is really a bad movie.
Wrong. The second is the most important sequel.
I definitely plan on watching all of them. I’m a little addicted now.
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions You just made my day! 🥳
Me as well! you have made my day 😁
Saw this movie as a twelve year old when it first came out way ahead of its time and never tire of seeing people’s reactions to it⚛️❤
Well, thank you. I appreciate you watching.
The desert scenes were filmed in multiple locations of northern arizona, like near the Grand Canyon
I think if he tried whispering it would just come out as nonsense hissings
We actually do see Landon get knocked out from a hit on the head with a rifle during the hunt, so the skull fracture part could be true. Whether he was still able to talk before he was lobotomized is unclear, though kind of implied he could. There’s a novel where he couldn’t because of [SPOILERS]; and a comic where he could and gets beaten until his skull is fractured, requiring surgery to save his life as Zaius said
If you haven’t already seen “Rollerball”
Maybe you can consider it for your nostalgic sci-fi night✌️
Thank you very much for all of the suggestion. Definitely will be writing all of those down and thank you for watching as well.
POTA is one of the classics of all time. For a future sci-fi watch I highly recommend the 1971 movie The Andromeda Strain.
Not the new version.
Thank you very much for all of the suggestions. Definitely will be writing all of those down and thank you for watching as well.
You should watch "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" right away! .... It explains Everything!
Is this a movie or is it a documentary?
Awesome movie and reaction!!! 👏👋🙌🌠🌠
Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it.
You didnt leave in the blood curdling Ape Roar at the Beginz of "The Hunt"?!...😮
Well, I’m sorry. Having only seen this for the first time that day didn’t really know that was gonna be a great moment that you guys would hate to have been left out.
@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions AllGood NoSweat SweetHeart!!!😘
1. Ratings weren't all that back then. This was rated G.
2. NICE present man. 😍😈
3. See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil = Clueless apes (Except Dr. Zaius)
7. Dr. Zaius/Maurice Evans played Samantha Steven's warlock father in "Bewitched"
Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it.
Cool
Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it.
I always thought the lake was salt water
Check out the original The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
Thank you very much. I have it written down.
I think this one is the best.
🙊🙉🙈...❤'diT So Much!!! Wonder if that was in the script or Just to good to pass'Up 😂🎉
When these movies came out that they were. Especially since they mentioned evolution
You should watch all 10 of these!
...except the Mark Wahlberg one.
Oh lord. Ok then.
It's really only this original ground breaking classic, & the first cgi RISE OF THE APES(which takes up the story before the Space mission) that are worth bothering with.
Your reactions are awesome! Especially the Wall-E line!😅Check out the original War of the Worlds (1953).
Yes, that is an amazing idea. I took a science fiction, appreciation class and college. I really love HG Wells.
The name of our son is Sol. Which is why our system is called the solar system. So we call our planet Earth and our sun sun, in our moon moon. Not very imaginative are we
you have to watch the 4 sequels
You know, I will always enjoy seeing your comments
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions thanks i enjoy your reactions

At the Very End it wasnt Man that killed Man it Was Skynet (ai) Shhhhh!🌎
Whispers (damn you, Elon)
Halloween coslay's? in the summer .Cons like SDCC are fine to do a Nova cosplay. I'm not sure what Oct. is like weather wise in your neck of the woods. If you are thinking of an Ape suit Ive doen those a few times and Conquest Of the Planet Of The Apes has the most economically easy costumes of the bunch as well as a couple of civvie's from Escape from POTA. If you should ever do so please post a pic or two.
Ha ha, most definitely will
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions Thank you.
Enjoyable reaction. Funny lady.
Just go through life being a silly goose
I would go straight from this to the newer ones, but some of the original sequels are really good and there are many older films like this that deserve a watch and continue to resonate today, despite dated effects and what-not
Well, thank you for checking it out with me. I appreciate it. I definitely wanna watch all of them, including the new ones.
LOL @ more water..... but its drinkable water the water they landed in was toxic.

🚨There is Absolutely No Wang Cupping Allowed in The Champagne Rooms!!!🛑🎩
🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️❤️
Some of the sequels are okay, but the next one with Heston.... #NoSpoilers. I hated it. It haunted me as a little kid (born in '68), when I saw it on t,v,, alone one Sunday afternoon. I did like the rebooted versions of the 2000s.
Oh no, you got me a little spooked to wanna watch it! 😳
Beneath is arguably the best sequel as it ties in so well to the first. The more modern CGI versions are obviously different.
There’s no way that THE STATUE OF LIBERTY WOULD SURVIVE THAT LONG
but you don't have a problem with APES SPEAKING ENGLISH? ok, got it.
@ actually no because so much time has passed. Certain things like THE STATUE OF LIBERTY having to be restored a few times in 150 years. So I “buy” the talking apes over that.
@ plus I took geology and oceanography...so that part was the most unrealistic...condition and location
😂😂😂😂😂
@@SinisterSouthernbelleReactions I had another comment that vanished. Certain real world things are harder to suspend disbelief over. I can “buy” in 3000 years that there might be talking apes.
In our household, we believe in paganism and follow it through, but also give our children the right to get educated regarding all religions and allowing them that right.
So just because I talk country and have opinions regarding space travel and aliens & know many a “Christians” who refuse to believe in life outside of earth as well the the fact that dinosaurs don’t exist. That simply does not give you the right to basically call me “stupid” aka a pseudo intellect. 🙄
I watch these movies to have fun and to help battle my mental health issues and turds like you that think they honestly know everything about the person that they see on the screen just off of one minor statement are the viewers I never want on my channel.
Have a great day..
2000 S.U.X.,,,,,🥰Awwww GreatReferance!!!!
