Such good advice!. When I was much younger my music teacher used to tell me the same things about fingering. Good to have you refresh my memory.
This is a really, really good video. I am currently around Grade 4 on trumpet, only been learning for a year, after taking a 32 year break! I am currently trying to play a couple of pieces faster. I'm glad that you advised to play with the finger tips and not the joints, as I have seen some players play with their finger joints and wondered whether I should be doing likewise. Now I know that I'm already playing correctly with the finger tips.
Very good advice, and your technique is fantastic. To start with I was wondering where you got a left handed trumpet, but then I realized that the video is mirror reversed. In fact, another tip for playing fast is to practise fingering with your left hand i.e. mirror reversed. Then when you go back to playing normally it is much easier. Some sort of crazy left-brain, right-brain thing.
Thanks and Yes, the left hand fingering tip is well known, and a great benefit to playing trumpet. We could switch back and forth if we wanted to.

I'm impressed. I watched your saxophone video the other day and got your Free Guide but I'm a Trumpet player and didn't realize you were so talented at trumpet as well. I really haven't had much time since I got your guide to watch or study it but I'm going too. I'm semi-retired but a professional entertainer still (singing mostly) but I have and do play my horn on occasion and plan to incorporate it a lot more in my shows in the future. Thanks for the lessons and advice. I intend to watch a lot more in the future.

Love the video, thank you. I tried playing Arbans within the first year of playing and it was so hard and frustrating. Have just been playing now for less than three years and its still hard. My hand positions are good, but ill try out your other tips.

Well stated. I had some of the best teachers, I won't mention them here from the slow slamming of the valves in he beginning, to the correct hand position and using the tips of he fingers. I actually had the pinky ring removed off my oldest Strad ( # 6158 ) and it's slim and sleek. i also learned the opposite hand playing trick from a guy in the NY Tonight Show Band which really works. Good job !!!

Brilliant, thank you so much Donna. I didn't realize that sticking your pinky under the ring adds more mouthpiece pressure.I tried it out and there is a clear difference between with and without the pinky under the ring.

Hai Donna i also play saxophone and trumpet im selftaught my trumpet sound is somwhat tight not that open ringing brassy sound some say to big mouthpiece bad buzzing and more on low volume its OK what am i doing wrong can you help or advice me in my practice or playing rutine

Was searching for a solution to a sticky middle value and saw this but what amazes me that you have a left handed trumpet. Thought I was seeing things at first. I will check my finger positions. And I am much older than you.

How do I get a good time on the space C and above? So far, I have been slowly working my way from low Gb chromatically up and back down. However, I still seem to have a poor pinched sound when the C tries to play. Also, if any pressure on teeth..would placing some sort of wax over the teeth help sooth the pressure when playing the upper notes space C and above?
I would strongly urge you to take lessons. You are using pressure and pinching your lips to make the sound and you're going to have more problems if you keep doing what you are doing
Space C and above... What is a good Mouth Piece to use? How should the Embrasure look and can you play the notes with out a lot of pressure of the mouth piece pressing on your lips? I ask because I'm a Saxophonist but learning to play Trumpet currently.
If you are just starting out on trumpet, stick with an equivalent of a Bach 7C mouthpiece
The "standard" mouthpieces that are issued is a Bach 7C ( Yamaha equivalent is an 11C4 ). Mouthpiece choice is very personal and there no one suits all good music stores will let you trial pieces but these can be rare. If you have a choice when you purchase a Trumpet and have no idea I would recommend a Bach 3E as from my personal perspective the 7C was workable but lack lustre the 3E is a little shallower and the cup width just a little narrower which I felt more comfortable with. If you have the 7C for now then it will work OK while you build your embouchure before you start spending money on a more long term mouthpiece. As for pressure you should aim to use as little force as possible against your lips building your embouchure is not something that can be captured in a short paragraph. When beginning stay below and within the staff - use this time to form good technique, learn the B flat scales, if you try to go high too early you will tend to push the trumpet hard against your lips this is just a way to stretch the lips which is - not good. Long tones are good for building breathing and control.

My 3rd valve started working better instantly!
Like in my case. I only have my right hand, I have to use my pinky finger in order to whole the trumpet. What you reccomend in my case.
If I understand you correctly, then you will need to keep your pinky in the ring, just like when we have to turn pages or use a plunger mute.

Yep...hand position and really one doesn't need to rest the pinky on the hook/ring. Let it fly where it wants because holding it down in or on the hook/ring weakens your 3rd finger. There's a tendon that connects the 3rd finger and the pinky. When moving the 3rd finger the pinky wants to move also. Restricting the pinky thus makes the 3rd finger, which is also the weakest of the 3, even weaker. Curved fingers too are a must.
I always tell my students to use their finger pads/tips instead of their knuckles. Not only will the valves start sticking over time, using the knuckle technique with the valves not going down straight will wear air pockets between the piston and the casing which leads to valves leaking air. Expensive repair for that is either the manufacturer building you new over size pistons, or having the pistons nickel plated then re-lapping,etc.

In my case I only have my right arm, I am left arm amputee. So I do have to have my small finger in the ring or the front loop in order to stabilize my hand. What is your recommendation to me? Thanks for sharing.
