Shredder's "make the turtles do chores" plan was actually genius. From then on, Splinter had to live with the guilt that he could have been living in relative cleanliness all along, instead of a filthy diseased trash pit, but chose not to. The guilt would soon drive him to crushing self-doubt.
I have wondered why that didn't happen, and surely the rat would have become half-Hamato Yoshi, and Hamato Yoshi would have become half-Rat, not just one way around?

Vol 2 of the comic does something like that with splinter and the Turtles and....it was honestly a really depressing story (seriously the TMNT comic is no joke)

Hamato Yoshi was banished from the Foot clan for reasons I don't quite remember at this time and grew a family with his wife Tang Shen. 16 year later he was found by the new leader of the Foot Clan (and former rival) Oroko Saki AKA the Shredder. Shredder had the four sons executed in front of Hamato Yoshi. Before being killed himself, Hamato Yoshi vowed vengeance in another life for Saki's cruelty. It turns out Shredder made a deal with a witch in Feudal Japan soon after the death of Yoshi and his sons, to be reawakened to lead the Foot Clan to new heights of power in a powerful city of Light (AKA New York). Fast forward to present day New York and the turtles and a rat are being experimented on to create super soldiers and mutant body armor. Eventually they are mutated and memories of their past lives are slowly regained throughout the series. Its a really cool take that weaves in a whole other aspect of the TMNT lore and is pretty great IMO.
If it was 2012 Shredder, it would make sense if he didn't want to lose the mask because his face is horribly burnt and scarred from battling Hamato Yoshi in Japan. But yeah, nothing really wrong with 1987 Shredders mug.
I know right? 1987 shredder was almost good looking without his mask wearing civilian clothes. There were also times when I thought he looked more like a black dude than a Japanese guy without his shredder duds on.
I always thought it was really interesting how Shredder looked like the most normal person ever under the mask. In the 80's you learned from a young age that masks usu mean they are probably hiding something horrific under there. So when he finally did take it off you thought he'd be all Cobra Commander under there but nope......JC Penny's catalog model.
I think they made it clear from the beginning that the mask was just armor and he was a regular guy named Oroku Saki, only later did they really commit to making him look like his toy model all the time.

Seven years late, but I should point out that in Pizza by the Shred, Shredder wasn't trying to poison the turtles. He was searching for their lair and he was using a Pizzeria as a means to find it. The gimmick of this pizzeria is using whatever ingredient you want and he believed that the turtles would order the weirdest pizza they could make. Once that happens, he would add a cloaking device disguised as an anchovy so that he would find their lair and ambush them.
He says in “Take Me To Your Leader” that his first career choice was actually being an author. Ruthless dictator was second, according to that Oscar worthy episode.

Especially when you consider that the turtles are about 15 or 16 years old, which would only make them about a year or two older than Zack. Zack always came across way younger than "almost 14," especially next to the turtles.

The shredder not removing his mask or armor kinda makes sense for the animators to cut cost. It meant that shredder's mouth was one less thing that needed animation, and not removing his armor was for the same reason. Every frame costs a lot of money because they were drawn by hand, and it's easier for the animation studio to cheap out and save money, so it really makes sense from that perspective. Yes, from an in-universe perspective, it's silly. I do agree with that.
I'm going to assume that #8 is the direct result of them taking a shortcut to save money by not having to draw, paint, or animate the shredders mouth move
I think one of the most awkward moments (not mentioned in these vids, at least) was where Shredder's stupid mind-control ray went haywire, making everyone think they're kids/dogs/monkeys, and his super-mutants started dancing and singing Vaudeville. That whole episode is hilariously bad, from animation and dialogue to its premise. It's one long awkward moment, and I love it!
9:58 wait...hold up. Remembering stuff from the animals they were mutated with? That potentially both suddenly makes sense and also is way dumber and concerning. There are questions of just how much of their brain is still human... Though the turtles having built in basic knowledge of learning to walk and basic ninjitsu would be kinda interesting.
I hated when they put "spunky kids" in the shows to "help" the heroes and provide what writers no doubt mistook for comic relief. I call it the Scrappy Doo effect.

I hated it when Michelangelo stopped using his nunchucks and replaced them with a grappling hook thing, because the big brave makers of TMNT wimped out when the helicopter moms complained about those horrible, dangerous weapons. But it was still okay for the other turtles to have katana swords and sai daggers. Yes, I'm female and I watched this show. Problem?
+UnCreative Deconstructionism Basically, helicopter parents (both moms and dads) are people who're really,really,REALLY involved to their child's life. Like, to the point of being overcontrolling, overprotecting and overperfecting in their attempts to remove all present and future obstacles/threats in their precious angel's life path (meddling up with their studying, choosing their friends etc.) ,and cleaning up their messes for them.
Actually, they phased out the nunchucks because the U.K. Was tired of censoring it out of their version. (Censorship of Ninja and Nunchucks were bad over there because it was in a negative spotlight at the time.)

+david hoenig Ever read the original Mirage TMNT comics? The Rat King is like the most dark and disturbing character in the whole universe, however brief his appearance may be. The guy teaches Splinter a lot about his animal side, and even convinces him to resort to cannibalism to survive. Their encounter leaves such an impact to Splinter, that when Splinter dies in the comic, the last thing he sees, is a vision of the Rat King.. It's kinda painful for a Mirage fan to see him bumbling about in these videos. :D

Hey, Shredder running a pizza joint is priceless and I think the Foot Clan owned a pizza shop during the first season, you know back when they actually owned a lot of front businesses, when Shredder, Krang, Bebop, & Rocksteady were still somewhat competent. Also Shredder could have been making money that whole time he, Bebop, and Rocksteady were working there. Though they would have been smarter to just keep the Pizza shop as a front business and let the Turtles' love of pizza unknowingly bankroll their operations (though give Bebop and Rocksteady jobs within the company that don't involve them being anywhere near the pizzas). Now that's an evil plan that I think even ol' Krang could get behind.

I remember when I was much younger, my mom got me a Burger King TMNT tape that had Zak on it. It was The Great Boldini episode and looking back....I actually LIKED that episode, even with Zach and Catilin in it. I guess that was because I didn't remember Zach's introduction episode which was basically him just tripping around and crap. I guess in the Great Boldini episode I was distracted more so by the turtles actually kicking ass and Raph being more sarcastic for some reason (as in when he gets pissed that Irish-stereotype cop thinks they're leprechauns because their green and short.) to be annoyed by those two kids even when they got themselves into trouble just for being stupid to go back into the museum. Also, random appearance by the Rat King in that one and suddenly Don Torelli looks different and is Boldini's cousin. What drugs were they one for the story meeting for THIS one?
Re Number 14: considering the Turtles seemed to easily learn Ninjutsu (likely from the contact with Hamato Yoshi) and Splinter could fall under Rat King's control (like a regular rat) I don't think Bebop and Rocksteady having memories of the animals they got crossed with is that bad. It even kinda works in that the mutagen effects seem consistent.
One of my favorite guity pleasures of this show are the gangsters on the show! Don Turtelli, Tony "The Butcher" Vivaldi, Pinky McFingers, and Big Louie. lol

Raph had a good reason for becoming The Nightwatcher in TMNT. The previous version just so happened to be an old man that he rescued while his brothers were busy dealing with the Triceratons. After the old man died, Raph decided to take on the hero role for him
on the plus side, I liked the designs of these turtles. And I liked how their weapons look Home made. Different colors. All the turtles look alike so it's like something splinter did when they were kids. The belt buckle thing is very parents like to me too.

Somehow, making it so Shredder had to do everything himself with Bebop and Rocksteady (who I found very quickly became useless - I'd have preferred they'd actually be a bit of a threat), make the bad guys seem really non-threatening. Having the Turtles have to fight an army at least a few more times could have raised the stakes. That was something I actually liked about the 2003 series - Shredkrang had an army that he actually used.

Seven years late, but I should point out that in Pizza by the Shred, Shredder wasn't trying to poison the turtles. He was searching for their lair and he was using a Pizzeria as a means to find it. The gimmick of this pizzeria is using whatever ingredient you want and he believed that the turtles would order the weirdest pizza they could make. Once that happens, he would add a cloaking device disguised as an anchovy so that he would find their lair and ambush them.
You know, maybe Shredder should have just given up on world domination and just opened up a Pizza parlor for the Foot Clan.
He says in “Take Me To Your Leader” that his first career choice was actually being an author. Ruthless dictator was second, according to that Oscar worthy episode.

The shredder not removing his mask or armor kinda makes sense for the animators to cut cost. It meant that shredder's mouth was one less thing that needed animation, and not removing his armor was for the same reason. Every frame costs a lot of money because they were drawn by hand, and it's easier for the animation studio to cheap out and save money, so it really makes sense from that perspective. Yes, from an in-universe perspective, it's silly. I do agree with that.

I think one of the most awkward moments (not mentioned in these vids, at least) was where Shredder's stupid mind-control ray went haywire, making everyone think they're kids/dogs/monkeys, and his super-mutants started dancing and singing Vaudeville. That whole episode is hilariously bad, from animation and dialogue to its premise. It's one long awkward moment, and I love it!

I hated it when Michelangelo stopped using his nunchucks and replaced them with a grappling hook thing, because the big brave makers of TMNT wimped out when the helicopter moms complained about those horrible, dangerous weapons. But it was still okay for the other turtles to have katana swords and sai daggers.

+david hoenig Ever read the original Mirage TMNT comics? The Rat King is like the most dark and disturbing character in the whole universe, however brief his appearance may be. The guy teaches Splinter a lot about his animal side, and even convinces him to resort to cannibalism to survive. Their encounter leaves such an impact to Splinter, that when Splinter dies in the comic, the last thing he sees, is a vision of the Rat King.. It's kinda painful for a Mirage fan to see him bumbling about in these videos. :D

Hey, Shredder running a pizza joint is priceless and I think the Foot Clan owned a pizza shop during the first season, you know back when they actually owned a lot of front businesses, when Shredder, Krang, Bebop, & Rocksteady were still somewhat competent.
Also Shredder could have been making money that whole time he, Bebop, and Rocksteady were working there. Though they would have been smarter to just keep the Pizza shop as a front business and let the Turtles' love of pizza unknowingly bankroll their operations (though give Bebop and Rocksteady jobs within the company that don't involve them being anywhere near the pizzas). Now that's an evil plan that I think even ol' Krang could get behind.

I remember when I was much younger, my mom got me a Burger King TMNT tape that had Zak on it. It was The Great Boldini episode and looking back....I actually LIKED that episode, even with Zach and Catilin in it. I guess that was because I didn't remember Zach's introduction episode which was basically him just tripping around and crap. I guess in the Great Boldini episode I was distracted more so by the turtles actually kicking ass and Raph being more sarcastic for some reason (as in when he gets pissed that Irish-stereotype cop thinks they're leprechauns because their green and short.) to be annoyed by those two kids even when they got themselves into trouble just for being stupid to go back into the museum. Also, random appearance by the Rat King in that one and suddenly Don Torelli looks different and is Boldini's cousin.

Re Number 14: considering the Turtles seemed to easily learn Ninjutsu (likely from the contact with Hamato Yoshi) and Splinter could fall under Rat King's control (like a regular rat) I don't think Bebop and Rocksteady having memories of the animals they got crossed with is that bad. It even kinda works in that the mutagen effects seem consistent.
I don't know... they didn't absorb the rhino and pig. The original animals continued to exist.

Good to see Krang got revenge on Phelous for calling his floating island plan the number #1 stupidest. Its not really a bad plan (its just the execution in the episode that could use some work), maybe Krang just gave up on the whole planet conquering thing and decided he wanted to be a criminal Kingpin instead. I mean there's nothing wrong with trying something different for a change.
If only they could combine the plans and have lure the turtles to Shredder's pizzaria on an island, get them to fall in love with each other, and then float them all away.

Somehow, making it so Shredder had to do everything himself with Bebop and Rocksteady (who I found very quickly became useless - I'd have preferred they'd actually be a bit of a threat), make the bad guys seem really non-threatening.
Having the Turtles have to fight an army at least a few more times could have raised the stakes. That was something I actually liked about the 2003 series - Shredkrang had an army that he actually used.

And we all know middle and high school is when we all foolishly abandon watching cartoons because "it's for kids and WE'RE TEENAGERS AND SO MUCH MORE MATURE". It's only after high school that people go back and are like "wow that was stupid. Cartoons are awesome!"
