    I literally just looked this up 2 minutes after I received it in the mail. I was thinking this could be a nice butterfly knife I can use everyday and carry around but when I saw the huge package and how heavy it was, I was like “uhhh….is this it? Maybe they packed it super well?” Then I come to find out it’s a sword. I’m laughing so hard right now because it NEVER occurred to me to check the dimensions or anything lmao. What I learned is check dimensions before you order 💀

      I'm reading your comment laughing, because I could see me in your shoes. Except, I ordered it because it's a damnnnn sword. Lol! Saw a random video with it, hunted it down and bought it. Came here, to see who knows it exists. One of the Dopest blades ever made, just idea and engineering alone. I could imagine getting a big ahh package and saying "my lil' edc knife? Huh? Wait? Hold on....WTF....?!"
      Lol. I just bought a Machete, but a foldable, well-crafted one it's just insane.

      @@charlessalmond7076 no idea on their use in the military, but from a crafty point of view, it would be relatively easy to make a balisong with limited technology and materials. Almost frictiom folder easy, and certainly easier than making a slipjoint/backlock/linerlock.

    Love it, got the green and satin version the other day after seeing the shot show previews last year. Great lock/ mechanism, feels great in the hand for all chopping. Especially when you choke back and hit that sweet spot between the belly and recurve.
    Haven't had mine pinch yet but the lock still pretty new and tight..... As you can see in the review with all the smiles...... It's a tone of fun and nobody will ever guess there is a knife that size hidden away.

    Definitely a unique blade even though the "butterfly" knife has been around for years. I like the safety lock to fully open it, Gerber probably added that for legal reasons and so people don't try flipping the thing open and closed like they're Bruce Lee. Pretty cool all in all. It would be awesome if they just made it into a standard fixed blade like you said.

  • @flapxjackson
    @flapxjackson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks cool. I can see a lot of people getting this and using it. For a machete, it’s compact. I see it easily thrown into a bag where a full sized machete might get left behind. The pinching aspect isn’t great. But you showed that you could alleviate that by wearing gloves. Though pinching is why I stopped using Gerber multi tools with the slide out jaws like the Gerber 600. It was nice being able to engage the pliers with a flick of the wrist. But if I clamped down on thin material the handles pinched my palm. I go with a Leatherman or a SwissTool now.

  • @calebg7682
    @calebg7682 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m kind of with you. I’m glad someone is out there trying innovative ways to make a machete more compact. This would allow you to carry a machete in a fanny pack on a day hike. That is pretty cool! I care about the bulk of gear, so from that angle this does intrigue me.
    But I’m not sure I need one, or that most anyone else needs one. Like you said, it doesn’t replace the other tools I already have, and if I’m already doing fine with the tools I have, then I probably don’t need to carry an extra one. And, while the R&D may justify the price tag, I don’t think my usage would justify paying that price.
    So I kind of land on the fence.

    The blade looks so similar to the blade of my Schrade SCHF9; I call it my Chef Nine. I use it primarily for light chopping and wood processing. If I had to choose between the Gerber machete and my Ontario SP58, I'd go with the Ontario machete everytime. The Gerber is a pretty cool concept but it's too many steps to deploy it. With the Ontario it requires one quick unsnap of a metal button on the leather sheath, rock the Sp58 handle forward and draw it from the sheath; it's ready for use. Like you, I absolutely love my two Gerber Strongarms, coyote and black, and they are my go-to blades of choice. BTW, I love LAPG products. My favorites are the Operator Pants ($30/pair) and the LAPG Bail Out Bag, great organizational bag I take overland camping. Mine was on sale for $29.

    Excellent review Aaron. Enjoyed it a lot. I would take one. Don't think I would take it over some other fixed blades I have if I was forced to only have a couple blades. I do think it's cool though. If you think about all the parts, probably around 40 to 50 parts it's not that bad a price. I've been a machinist. For them to make that many parts in America, that price is very reasonable to me from a parts to cost perspective. Now will it replace another $140 fixed blades i have....well?

    Been refreshing their website daily since this was announced January of last year. Last night the Add To Cart buttons showed up again but actually worked this time. Wanted Black/Black, but it's still listed as Out Of Stock, so black handle it is. This seems like a nice tool to add to my moto/camp gear.

    My brain says no. Moving parts on a chopping tool? I'll pass.
    But my heart says yes. It looks cool, and it did seem to hold up. They actually designed it to withstand batoning. And made in USA. And it's very compact and looks tons of fun to use.
    My wallet says no.
    And Australian Customs would seize it immediately because it is a balisong design.
    I'll never have one but I am glad to see it exists.

    I really like what they did here. Great idea pretty good design. Great and honest review. With that said. At that price point I'd personally like to see a higher quality steel. I mean D2 or O1. That is a tool so it would only make sense to have tool grade steel. I could even accept 1095 high carbon. A full tang "single down" would be awesome as well. Still would make a great addition to any collection or bugout bag.

      Came to comments to say the same thing. This looks like an excellent river knife, especially for in the city; I fly fish for trout and salmon often and getting through the rivers/creeks is tough without a large knife. With waders on, if you plan on going waist deep, there's just nowhere to keep a fixed blade machete on your person without it constantly taking a dunk.
      Also, I often have to trek through parks during these fishing trips and don't really want to be around kids and parents with an easily spotted machete hanging off my leg.
