Kimblee does have deep respect for the rockbells because they stayed true to their convictions till the end. He hates hypocrites and hopes more people stay on the path they declare, just like himself and the rockbells.
Yeah it's an interesting kind of morality that Kimblee follows. Doing X or Y has no meaning to him, but dedicating yourself to something and sticking to it he holds in the highest regard, whatever that something might be. He values a soldier who will follow their orders to kill without complaint, and he values a doctor who insists on saving lives even against authority.
And because he himself follows that, while he may greatly respect the Rockbells for their dedication as doctors, he also would not think twice about killing them, as that's the order his superiors gave him as a soldier (not shown in the anime but in the manga).
killing them was his mission. That is the reason why his squadron found them. But Scar was faster

@@Roxasandaxel13 Yeah that's what the last line's about - because his orders as a soldier were to kill them, he'd do it without any hesitation, because in his worldview a soldier is supposed to kill on command. Maybe I should have been more direct about that, as the orders are not shown in the anime. Going back to edit that bit.

I'd argue Winry isn't a "damsel in distress." She's a hostage yes, but she still has her own agency and her actions still affect the story. If she was the usual trope she'd just be sitting there waiting to be rescued.
Kimblee was part of the squadron that was sent to eliminate Winry's parents (whereas he said "recover").
But what he said is true - he DOES respect them folks, and Winry as well.

He respects people who, like himself, uncompromisingly stick to their personal code, whatever that may be.
But they were saving the lives of people marked for extermination so the military would hardly care for their well being. And Kimlee is not somebody you send on rescue mission...
Something I have always wondered was why Pride didn't kill buccaneer and the others in the tunnel. I guess the only thing I can think of was that he was concerned about why Hawkeye was visiting, so he decided to focus on her.
Yeah Hawkeye diverted his attention, but it's strange that he still couldn't spare a couple seconds to kill the soldiers.
@@Potkanka My guess was because he didn't consider their deaths being more important than Hawkeye being there. Them surviving or dying wouldn't matter to him either way. Plus as strong as he is, it still don't mean he'd be able to kill them all in a few seconds, since those 2 guys survived they know that in complete darkness Pride can't get them. So it could just end up being wasted time
@@iAmPimmiCue Hm that's true that maybe he wouldn't have killed them all that quickly anyway. Even without the "no light" info not everyone from the first group died so now it woudl be even harder. And I suppose not showing up had the advantage of not having more witnesses who could analyze his power and find more weaknesses, although he's probably pretty confident about not ever losing to them (I mean, he *is* literally Pride)
@@_jackeline.ferreira I always thought his main mission was monitoring the countrywide transmutation circle, and he only started monitoring Riza after she learned who he was.
The funny thing with Kimblee is that while he’s clearly manipulating Winry is complete believable that he has respect for their parents due to them not fleeing and sticking to their belief on help other until the end.
He’s quite the complex character
In the manga, during the Ishvalan flashback, the scene of him finding their bodies is even shown. And he very much indicates that he had respect for them and would have liked to meet them - and in that moment, there's no-one he would have to fake that for for any reason.
Wouldn't have stopped him from killing them of course, but that's just how Kimblee rolls.

Back when Mustang and Bradley were talking in Bradley's office, Mustang said, "How do you think your son would feel when he finds out his father is a homunculus?"
Bradley, "Was that a threat? You'll have to do better. Selim will work as a weak point in my life."
At the time, we all assumed Bradley was just being a horrible dad, but the truth is far more horrifying.
I love the foreshadowing in this show!

Also notice that Selim is the ONLY PERSON in the whole show who didn't mistake Al for the fullmetal alchemist when they first met... the author set this up really well

Kimblee was given orders by senior staff to kill the rockbells due to them tending to the wounded ishvalans as well as amestrians.
Funny to think that if scar hadn't killed them.
The amestrian army was going to kill them anyways.
Kimblee didn't lie about respecting them.
He respected their dedication and resolve.
He is a realist monster.

Got to appreciate arakawa's interpretation of sociopathy.
The Armstrong hair swirl is contagious, as is the sparkle. I mean it might not really be, but everyone who works for them has it too. And there's a bonus gag strip in the manga volumes later on, when some characters have to stay at the Armstrong manor for a while, their hair starts turning into the same kind of swirl. Being a bonus gag strip it's not canon, but I still like to think there's some truth to it.
They pronounced Olivia differently because they use the French version of the name, that's why it's also spelled Olivier
Olivier is a male-only first name, while Olivia is female-only. But if memory serves, both are written the same in Japanese.
I kinda really hate her having that name. It’s like meeting a chick whose name is John.

The thing about Kimblee that most people don't realize or mention is that he is not a liar, he says what he believes at all times. So I do think he was likely among those who went to retrieve the bodies of the Rockbells because we know they are buried in the graveyard back in Resembol, meaning that someone had to of gotten them and sent them home. The only time he could be lying is about the couple holding a photo of Winry, though as we don't ever actually see anything post Scar's attack on them inside the building for all we know they could of taken out a photo as they bled to death.
16:34 pride being the first homunculus makes perfect sense here as it is typically ordered as first in line of the seven deadly sins, its also the “original sin” that every other is derived from and is the vital principle in each of them too
The whole 'original sin from which every other sin is derived from' is shown in the fact that all the other hommunculi's powers are seen in pride's powers. Since he's the first, it's possible that that fathers refined one aspect of pride's powers when creating and new hommunculus
What I've come to love about phrase "there's no way" is Greed's sort of catchphrase (nothing is impossible) in Japanese dub; "arienai nante koto wa arienai".
Which can/is translated few ways, such as _There's no way "there's no way"_

Yeah this is why Bradley said Selim is never his weak point 😂 Pride is kind of a big brother to the 7 sins, and Wrath is the youngest (not counting the second Greed) since the first Greed didn’t know about Bradley when he was captured.
The very first scene that we see Selim is when he's PROUDLY bragging about how awesome his father is and how proud he is of him as Fuhrer

Yep. Episodes 37 and 40 are high on my list of things I'm excited for. Particularly with all the time spent wondering who could possibly match the power level of the homunculi.
Winry is strong in the way the boys aren’t. She’s emotionally strong and they rely on her in a way to be that way. She’s not physically strong or anything but she’s strong in the ways that matter. She’s their rock. She’s the part of them that’s level and set. She’s a place they can always go back to and rely on. That’s why they’re so set on them being able to protect her and not make her cry again.
And now you know all the sins! Kinda can't help but feel bad for Mrs Bradley though, right? Sure she's oblivious to it but damn, what a husband and son...
I remember when earlier in the show when asked what he wanted to do, Selim responded "I want to make 'Father' proud"
There was also this other scene when the Elrics were in the library and he's just like what are you doing 😊. Just some signs to point out. Though it's funny to think Selim (Pride) is technically Bradley's (Wrath) superior
And when selim wrote an essay about Bradley then read it to him while they were having dinner (when gluttony was captured). I don't remember all of it but I specifically remember 'He does whatever I tell him to do' or something akin to that.

Winry isnt at all naive or useless, she is one of the strongest (obviously not in terms of power) characters in the entire show imo.

Pride is so cool and terrifying. He’s also among the three homunculi who were completely different t ppl in the 2003 anime. Like Selim was there and was the Fuhers son. But he wasn’t Pride. I think Wrath and Sloth were also different if I remember right.

It's been so much fun rewatching this anime for the 6th or 7th time with you. Easily one of my all time favorites. Can't wait for you to see the rest. It just keeps getting better.
The meeting between Pride and Hawkeye is one of my favorites for all that it implies for the plot and the characters. Pride and even Father were the ones who orchestrated the entire plan to hold her hostage and disperse the Mustang team. We now know that Bradley is just following orders.
Even Pride decided to leave the Briggs soldiers alive to pay all his attention to her, in short, they fear her, not in the way that she could fight against them, but as an important piece that can destabilize their entire plan.
Selim realizes that there is no point in hiding anymore and decides to reveal himself only to threaten her, because the main objective is to keep her away from Roy.
Even Pride offers to switch sides, which I find very naive of him.
In the same way, the scene is chilling, because Pride is, I understand you, I didn't see a way to fight him either, because he is not only the first homunculus, but also the most powerful and fearsome one. There is a line in the manga right after this scene: "Now the woman who lived in the shadows is afraid of them." I think it perfectly represents Riza's situation.
She always looks like an intelligent, discreet, prudent and almost invisible woman. That's why it was dangerous for homunculi.
And yes Ed and Winry are so cute together 🥰

- The fact that Kimblee is a raging sociopath that we've seen get bricked up for homicide, and he can still pull of seeming like a genuine nice guy to a person who hasn't seen that side of him is a testament to just how aware he is that he's crazy lol. I love it.
Kimblee did pick Winry up from the train station and that's where the convo happened! It was why he requested a car down the mountain at the end of the last episode before she got there.
Also, bit from theanga that isn't brought up, the story he tells her is only a half lie. He DID in fact recover her parents bodies and he did respect the fact that they died still taking in patients. However he wasn't sent to help them, he had been sent to kill them for assisting the enemy. Scar just did his job before he had a chance to get there. He does genuinely think highly of them though because they were semi aware that treating Ishvalans could be seen as treason, yet they did it anyway up to their deaths.
- Ed is in denial of his feelings for Winry and thus only science can save him from the romance circle!
- Poor Buccaneer. Don't worry man, I want a cute blonde to make me weapons of mass destruction too.
- I love how tight knit the Briggs soldiers are. We've seen comradery among soldiers at Central and and Eastern, but nothing that's so uniform outside of Mustang's private squad.
- The slow realization of who Pride is gives me such dopamine. Nobody gets it until the last minute and I live for it!
And you're right! You can't have a shadow without light. Thus, total darkness is the only thing that's safe.
- "Time to commit some atrocities to earn your first genocide rock!" -Kimblee to Ed probably.
- That's what I love about Arikawa's characters: normal people are strong and competant in the things they are familiar with. Winry can be a strong character that is capable at crafting vital prosthetics even if she isnt a trained killer.
- The reason they don't rely on Olivier while Kimblee is there is because right now she's pretending to be on the enemy's side and is also trying to hide the murder of one of their members. If Kimblee gives her an order, she will have to play along because Bradley has given him express authority. And of course they would enforce Winry's hostage state upon Olivier in that case.
actually, i think Ed is a teenage boy who just realized he was in the same room as his crush in just his pants on, so he's desperately trying to not get a bulge, because then he'd die of embarrassment =))
Not sure Kimblee is a soviopath I think it might be a combination of autism and PTSD. Kimblee only thinks in absolutes, a not uncomon traits with people with autism, and after what he saw in Ishval he chose to embrace it and become the carnarge he saw. He also seems a fair bit more raitonal before the first time he uses the philospher's stone.

it might have been confusing at first but it seems the reason Pride didn't kill the Briggs soldiers in the tunnel was because he got distracted with Hawkeye's presence at the Bradley household. Those events seems to be happening at the exact same moment so you could say Hawkeye saved those Briggs soldiers just by showing up.
I think Kimblee was honest when he talked to Winry, he does like people who stick to their convictions no matter what. He would admire the Rockbells.
Well Bradley did say that Selim couldn't be used against him.

Just rewatch the episodes where Selim writes about how much he loves his father King Bradley. Now you can laugh knowing who both of them are XD
Yeah, the Selim reveal is really awsome. YOu always get slightly uneasy around the kid before, but you always chalk it up to: "Where he is, the Fuhrer isn't far" and "God that poor kid, he doesn't even know" and sure he seems a bit overly sweet and kiddy, but hey, it's a child in a TV show, it happens.
Only now do you realize that _he_ was the one really making you uneasy and that all his sweetness was slightly overblown becaus ehe is just pretending

I like how he started to call Kimbly a monster because what he did in Ishval but then remebers the people he loves and respects called themselves monsters also because of what they did in Ishval. Then he stops judging him because he wasn't there and doesn't know what it was like in Ishval
"PRIDE IS HERE" is the only thing you need to say to get me excited for this reason!
This episode is why I've been saying that Bradley is nothing more than a figure head puppet to Father and Pride... but I didn't want to give spoilers lol. I always guessed that Pride was there to keep an eye on Bradley since he was part human.
Pride even said that Bradley being around human for too long that he’s kind of being soft on them for sparing their lives multiple times 😂

Not sure if you're ever gonna check out FMA 2003 but in the original anime, the manga wasn't this far yet so Selim was just a regular kid. I thought it was pretty interesting that he had a bigger role in the manga/Brotherhood version. I always enjoy characters who are more than they appear.
I'm happy you're having this complicated thoughts on the characters from either side. They're all really interesting and complicated. I'm getting excited to see you react to the last couple of episodes even though it's still sorta far away just cause I wanna know how you feel about the characters' actions at the end of the story.
It's probably worth rewatching episode 24 - or at least the scene where Selim reads the poem out - with the new context you have
I loved your reaction to Pride. I was looking forward to when you found out, it was priceless. Your reaction is just like when I found out when I read it in the manga. Think of Pride as King Bradley older brother.
The whole Pride plot-twist is just SO GOOD! Little details at the beginning, enough time to piece it out yourself and than the twist itself!
Also, a little spoilerish:
I like how here they tell us about Pride's kind-of-weakness in darkness, but we absolutely forget about it until Al uses it later! Such great storytelling!
Winry being a detriment to Ed and Al really isn't her fault in this case. She wasn't aware of the military's hidden agenda, and even trained soldiers like Hawkeye and the rest of Mustang's men are being used as hostages. So it makes sense that Winry is a weakness that could be exploited. Not to mention, if it weren't Winry, they could always use Pinako, Hughes' wife and daughter, or anyone else the Elrics are close to. Winry is just the best one for them to use as a bargaining chip.
final comment, Al's not immune to scars destruction, it's not bodily based, he can break anything he knows the composition of. Like a suit of iron armor.
It's poorly worded but I think he means that Al won't actually die from being destroyed as long as the blood seal is intact. If someone with a human body got hit like he did in their first confrontation for example they would die pretty much instantly.
I think calling Winry a liability is a bit harsh because you have to take in the grand scheme of things. The Elric brothers are of the incredibly rare people who can use alchemy without a transmutation circle, are involved in the military and are neck deep in what would potentially be an apocalyptic event being carried out by beings that are considered to be “immortal.”
Meanwhile, Winry is just Ed’s auto-mail mechanic no experience in military training or combat. However, as you could tell from the last episode, it doesn’t really matter where she goes, the military is going to use her because of her ties to the Elric brothers. If you really think about it, Winry is in a no-win situation because of her connection to the Elric bros. She could have all the military training and alchemic ability in the world, but at the end of the day, she’s being pinned in a battle against the Humonculi. There’s no winning that, no matter what tools you have at your disposal. If nothing else, being “just an auto-mail mechanic” is a benefit because she isn’t considered a “threat” to the Humonculi like the Elric bros. or Mustang’s troop.
Since it looks like you missed it Buccaneer clocked Ed because he was jealous that he has such a cute mechanic hence the "Life isn't fair!" line. Honestly though, can you blame him? Who wouldn't want Winry as their mechanic?
You have to remember that the Elrics up until very recently have been purposely keeping Winry in the dark in order to protect her from a lot of the things that go on in the world so her being used as a hostage or being the “damsel in distress” was never really her fault because she’s always been kept in the dark on who’s really on the Elrics side and who isn’t. If a military official comes up to her and says “come with me, we’re with the Elric brothers” and she doesn’t know anything about the corruption in the military, that isn’t her being naive because she was never give any indication of that being a red flag. It’s more put on the Elric brothers for not telling her anything when they’ve used these kinds of tactics before. What makes it worse is that she’s met good military officials like Alex and Hughes so there’s no reason for her to suspect anybody else.

I see what you're saying about Jamie and Kimbley. But I think the difference is there's a good man hiding somewhere DEEP down in Jamie. Kimbley's just crazy. He's fun to watch, but he's a truly evil man.

You van actually see Selim's Pride come out several times in the past. He was rather boastful about Amestris and Bradley on the multiple occasions.

It's not out of nowhere, it is slightly hinted at in previous episodes by the way Selim speaks and acts. usually metnioning how he wants to make Father "proud".
Also slightly hinted by the mom saying Selim is her "pride"

It's time to start end game preparation, all the pieces are coming together. There's a plan to unravel and many very powerful people in rotation as well as all the humuculi except lust left to kill. The armies of the north and east have started plotting, Mustang and his personal crew were plotting from the start. The look on your face when you started to realize Selim was the shadow creature was priceless, second only to when you learned he was pride. Yes technically pride out ranks wrath. For all his pride in being the first humuculus it's misplaced as father was the first, pride is just the first to be split from father.

Best part is that he genuinely does respect her parents, they were doctors till their last breath, healing both amestrians and ishvalens and not just one or the other. Kimbley is someone who respects people who stay true to their actions and what they claim to do. Doctors are doctors, they don’t choose who they heal. And he respects that they actually were people like that

The part where the guy with the automail punched Edward and said it was because life wasn't fair is because his automail mechanic is a sweaty dude while Edward has Winry.

Olivier hasn't spoken to the Elrics about anything for 2 reasons. 1, She knows their situation having hostages leveraged against them. With Kimblee's allegiance clearly with the homunculi she's not going to risk anything that doesn't need to be said. 2, Ed has made it pretty clear he is not a military-minded person. He's not going to follow orders of a military nature and he's already given her all the information she needs to begin formulating her own plans. When it comes to big operations the more people added into the mix the more opportunities for mishaps to occur, so she doesn't need them as far as her own perspective goes.
And again, either before, or immediately after episode 40, you need to go back and watch the first intro of the series to make a full circle.

If you recall, back during the episodes when Wrath is face to face with the Elric brothers and threatening them with hurting Winry, Ed says something about hurting Bradley through Selim, and Bradley says something like “you would never get to me through Selim”

I guess the idea is that Pride's powers only work if there's a light present to cast the shadow. The darkness of an enclosed space like the tunnel with no lights on doesn't count.

Been a bit since I commented on these, life stuff, haven't been able to really put a lot of analytical thought into things.
Buccaneer hit Ed because he's jealous of him for having a cute girl like Winry as his automail mechanic. Like the scene before it, where Ed's bouncing around after thinking about Hawkeye's comments on his love for Winry, it's a bit of slapstick exaggeration of the emotions and actions involved. Ed doesn't literally bounce around the room like that, and Buccaneer doesn't actually hit him with his automail hard enough to draw blood, it's just played up for comedic effect.
...So yeah, remember all those times Selim talked about helping "Father"? Funny thing, his phrasing, now that you know who and what he is huh?
Also, love the detail of Ed telling Al and Winry of his orders to kill with all 3 of them inside a jail cell, each trapped by their circumstances literally, and metaphorically.

There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. Buccaneer is jealous because Ed's automail engineer is a cute girl and his is some guy. That's why his response to Ed's question "What'd you do that for?" was "Life's not fair". Buccaneer is low key one of my favorite characters.
Buccaneer slashed ed because he likes winry and doesn't think ed deserves her.
Al doesn't immune to Scar, he got destroyed by Scar before and Ed loose his metal arm, so they went back home asking Winry to fix his arm, and then he can fix Al. Ed said Al is immune for the reason to keep Al with himself, Kimblee doesnt know that XD.
Winry was definitely naïve up until now, but that's in huge part because of the fact the brothers didn't tell her anything. Sure, she saw them being all roughed up, so she knows it's dangerous business, but she doesn't know how bad things are (with the humunculi and whatnot). That's in part due to her being a hostage; if she knew too much, it would be an issue. But now that Ed told her that she's a hostage, I think she's not as naïve anymore. She doesn't know everything, but she knows enough to know this is serious and dangerous business.
Also I don't think she's a damsel in distress. Upon learning she's a hostage, the first thing she decides is that she doesn't want to be that, and she'll do what is needed to make sure she's not a hindrance to the brothers. She still has agency. She's willing to throw herself into danger and into the unknown now that she has a better grasp of the situation. She might not have combat ability, but she is strong in other ways. Heck BECAUSE she has no combat ability, the fact she is willing to do this now makes her pretty badass in her own way.

Kimblee has a very strict code of honor. He's also a murderous psychopath that revels in taking lives, preferably in explosions. He was ordered to go bring the Rockbells back, but you don't choose your number one genocidal maniac for a rescue mission. The Rockbells had gotten under the skin of the military and were, in the military's eyes, committing treason by providing medical treatment to everyone, which was almost singularly the Ishvalans. So Kimblee's orders was more of a, 'you need to bring them back, but hostilities are at an all time high, so it's dangerous and we understand if something happens and they don't make it back ~wink~'. Kimblee was happy to follow orders and go to murder the Rockbells, while simultaneously having deeply held respect -- they were holding steadfast to their own beliefs, which is what Kimblee is all about regardless of what those beliefs are.
Pride does cast long shadows, and is the sin all other sins flow from.
I think Winry's naivetee in this situation is largely because she has very little knowledge about what is actually going on. She knows something about what Ed and Al are involved in because of Maes Hughes's death, but left before the showdown with Gluttony and Envy, and it's not clear how much she knew about the Homunculi, let alone being a hostage as Ed explicitly did not tell her when he called her.
Interesting thing bout you being surprised bout Salim being Pride. Try making a reaction to your reaction on "FMAB openings and endings", because you get to see Salim in one of them (i think it was 4th ending, not 100% sure). But it'd be interesting to see you react to your behavior before you started this whole journey.

I see what you mean about being morally grey. But I think there's a massive difference between Kimberly and Jamie Lanister. Don't get me wrong I love Kimberly, in fact I think he is a better written character than Jamie was but;
Jamie did the wrong things for the right reason. (except for Cersi, that was just wrong)

I also support Ed's pacifism, but the idea that he joined the military and don't intend to kill people bothers me for this character wise beyond his years. It's too naive for him, even as an idealist.
We have a strong line up too.. our forces are scattered right now. Imagine what they can accomplish together. That is what hohenheim's dream was about. Human evolve through coming together.
Winry is strong in a spiritual kind of way like most women are, not every woman can be Olivier Armstrong. While men are usually strong in a physical way and usually need women's support to take action, which Winry fully provides for the brothers. She's by no means a "random" character or a liability.
This is one of my favorite plot twist just because I totally didn't see it coming. Great reaction!
