Hey Dom, love your work! But I have a pro tip: Reverse the audio before you apply the reverb. If you reverse it back to normal it will fit even better because the "you" will be in right order and it will sound even more natural cause the vowels will appear in the "right way" and you still have this reverse effect!

Hey Tobias! This is a very good trick and thanks for sharing in the comments! For this specific track it didn’t work particularly well this way, because if I reversed and processed the reverb tail was very confused- if you do it with the snippet way you get a cleaner sound, at lest in this example- I tried the way you suggested, trust me :)- this is the most traditional way of creating reverse reverbs ;) I preferred to chop in this case as it gave better results for the track :)

A year later and that was the first thing I thought of too. The old analogue way of doing this was to turn the multi track tape over (so track 2 with the vocal, for instance, is now track 23), and then add the reverb and bounce the track reverb only, ducking the send to the reverb so that we only got the reverb on specific words. Going backwards, of course! Took some trial and error sometimes. But, as you say, the result was that the reverb came before but the word was the correct way round. Matched easier and was very quick to do.
This was one of those things that on very early DAWs we didn't know how to do because you couldn't run things backwards!
Now, I just reverse the vocal track, bounce the reverb, and swap it back again.

Try reversing the duplicated signal before applaying the reverb... and after reversing it again. Sounds better I think. That's the "Poltergeist" effekt. The reverb shouldn't be too long tho...

  • @StefanoLanzavecchia

One thing Dom does not say explicitely, but can easily be heard, is that the track with the reversed reverbed vocal has the same send fx's of the vocal track (because he started by duplicating the original track), so part of the lush sound is due to its reverb and delay sends.

Hey Dom! I tried the auto apply and the longer tail time (6000ms), but my Direct Processing isn't changing the length of the clip as in the video. I can hear that the reverb has been applied to the clip, but the length of the clip/event doesn't change to reflect the longer tail. It's really odd. Any suggestions why mine might not be working properly?

After duplicating the track, I usually reverse first, then add reverb, then reverse again back to normal. After that crossfade it with original vocal/instrument track at the short point, just where the instrumen/vocal starts. I feel it sounds a bit more natural. If the transient is important, as it is the case with the drums, then I print down just the reverb of reversed drums (reverb should be without early reflections). After that reverse reverb. If I am doing it for more than just single hit, I use sidechain compression on the reverb, so when drum hits, reverb is reduced. If it is single hit, than I usually just trim it. Hope this helps someone, just as an alternative. :D

Oooooh the Direct Offline Processing! Of course! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've been meaning to reverse some reverbs but ... more do it like I used to:
I remember reading about it a few decades ago and of course I had to try to flip the cassette tape on my Tascam PortaOne 4 Track and record my Alesis MicroVerb and IT WORKED. I was the ruler of the universe that afternoon! But of course it can be overdone and eventually the novelty faded and there was only so much you could do with the quality of cassette tape. Now back to the future and Cubase in 2021 ... Direct Offline Processing is the way to do it!!!

I have read and been instructed to use a short single reverb for vocals and a long reverb for reverb but in cubase how do I get a mono reverb because I want it to go to the vocals instead insert straight in because i still want to control it the same if i make a stereo FX station and insert a reverb plugin like Altiverb 7 ..vv ... how do i set it to mono. and if i make FX track mono and reverb in it will it be ok and become mono? Actually, I'm still very confused about this issue. I look forward to helping you find a solution. Thank you very much

@@bujuluv1 Do you mean specifically in Cubase?
The best way in Cubase is probably the "render in place" function.
Just select the whole region (midi or audio) you want to bounce, go to edit "render in place" or render settings, if you want to make specific changes before bouncing a track, like bouncing with all channel settings or dry or with group channel settings etc...
After setting up, just go for it! It will put the bounce file in a new track right beneath the original track - which will be muted.
