I paddle OC6 Master 60 in Rio de Janeiro. We tried that “lower cadence, high pressure” stroke this week. Won 8 of 10 1000 sprints yesterday and 7 out of 7 today! Thanks, Johnny!
So much is the catch using the full blade. So many people overreach in OC and dragon boat resulting in part of the blade being out of the water at the catch and then being brought into the water as it is pulled through resulting in cavitation and less power.
Great advice!!! If you had to cut this down to movie trailer length: “Most people try and get the stroke rate up instead of have the speed of the craft go up and then the stroke rate match it. So, that’s to me the first mistake people make. And a lot of people would try to increase the stroke rate in the water instead of just getting rid of the airtime to increase the stroke rate.” “Patience in the water is one of the main things you want to learn. Load the blade. Lots of pressure. And be patient.”
John Puakea, I really like this video! Love how you describe aspects of the stroke. Really well done!!! Thank you. I stand up paddle and teach. For the past 8 months I have been testing just what you said in this video (mostly slowing down to match vessel speed) and in the last month have used my legs more along with taking much of the twist out of my stroke. More power for sure and calmer!
Canoe designer and championship coach, John Puakea teaches us the Tahitian paddling technique that Shell Va'a is using to dominate the canoe races. This technique is almost opposite to what we are used to hearing. Now it's time to try it out and make it work.
The interviewer (at around 8.49) was asking about the right kind of stroke with cadence etc. Would it be correct and possibly easier to think of shovelling earth or snow? So you may take a slower shovel of snow but a larger amount, effectively moving more snow because you dig deeper and larger amount and move that? In this case, moving more water with a solid catch and maintaining load, quick return?

The stroke rate really spoke to me. Air time and stroke rate is so important.
CEMENT THEORY, our DB team has been teaching that for years now... we got Johnny coming and then Danny to this year to Miami!

Awesome! Thanks for this vid!!!
Great stuff guys! Jonny is the man

Good stuff, Johnny has great ideas. Thanks for the vid! 👊
+Johnny Kessel There's one more video coming soon with some video analysis done by Johnny.
