The U.S. could have settled for a conditional surrender or negotiated peace but the U.S. government insisted on unconditional surrender by Japan so that the U.S. government could have complete control and occupy the mainland. This was not a case of sacrifice some to save many.
Still buying into that propaganda argument, eh? The war in the Pacific had already broken Japan in numerous naval battles that put the air craft carriers in launching distance and the fire bombing runs that burned cities and what little war production value they had was already well underway by the time the A-bombs were even proposed as a bombing run. Sure, the Japanese military thought they were going out in a blaze of glory and their propaganda had them convinced to commit mass civilian suicide on some of the outer islands but it was pointless, USA navy didn’t have to do a boots on the ground to win. The A-Bombs were a crime against humanity flex as much as the interment camps, the cruelty was the point, it was of no military strategic value.

Grave of the fireflies is the only movie I refused to watch after reading the synopsis. For me the 80s and 90s really are the golden age of anime, but the Japanese animators of the time were definitely batshit crazy too
The anime is Barefoot Gen, not Grave of the Fireflies. Barefoot Gen is about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Fireflies is about (or rather set in) the fire bombings of Japan. Fireflies is not nearly as brutal on the gore, but hits in the feels more effectively. I do recommend watching Fireflies, it tells a story nobody else ever told.
