    Note: In Photoshop, the default blending math is non-linear for image modes other than 32-bits/Channel. To change this for 8 Bits/Channel and 16 Bits/Channel modes, go to Edit > Color Settings... and check the "Blend RGB Colors Using Gamma" checkbox and set the value to "1.00".

    Always great to see new CG tutorial channels, especially where there's some
    extra effort put in in presenting it. Keep it up!
    One but, the background music in between but also during explanations is too loud imo
    (it's at a point where it's sometimes louder than the speech).

    Hi, I am learning nuke. I am trying to find a tutorial that explain each pass and how to stack them. Where did you learn what order to layer and what blending mode to use to get correct composite ?

    I always run in to a problem in Photoshop when it comes to adding the passes together, they always seem way too over-exposed and bright. It seems to be impossibile to get them to match up. But, when combining them in After Effects using a linear workflow they seem fine. How do you set up Photoshop to work in linear space correctly?

  • @vickyvey1657
    @vickyvey1657 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    you cannot work in 32 bits in Photoshop as there is almost no effects or options to choose from...When converted to 16 bits all this comp goes out of window and multipass using ADD doesn't work anymore

    Great tutorial. Really helpful in understanding how to manipulate each pass.
    I'm using the Evermotion Archinteriors Vol 30 - Scene 002 as a test and I'm not finding it to produce the exact same result - slightly lighter in fact. I'm using Vray 3.5 so not sure if the problem lies there.

    Question, with Cebas' Final Render, render elements can be clipped, so that they don't cause an overlap effect in composite, basically, it turns whatever objects that are not in the element into an alpha matte, so that it basically blocks the object(s) if it passes between the camera and the objects that are included in the render pass... does Vray do the same thing?

    I would like to mention that when rendering the elements as separate render channels the composite does not look like the beauty pass. When I rendered only the raw image file as an exr the composite matched the beauty pass a lot better.

    • @jamescoppola1673
      @jamescoppola1673 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also make sure that if you are saving separate render channels to set the file format at exr full 32.

    Hi again Ismael,
    Right now i´m following your instructions for multipass compositing and I find that if I set the VrayRefraction to Lighter Color, then it is not correct comparing it to the beauty pass. It is linear dodge (add) that matches it though the color hue changes slightly from red to green a bit.
    Do you know what could be happening?
    Anyhow thanks for the tutorial!

    • @CGalter
      @CGalter  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Julio,
      glad you found the video helpful,
      to answer your question, yes you are right.
      linear dodge (add) is correct too, in my case i had the refraction baked in with the reflection pass, that's why i used Lighter Color which is correct too " Additive operation".
      you can visit this page where i explained this point. → cgalter.com/multipass-compositing-case-study/
      cheers,
      Ismail

    • @chokysenge
      @chokysenge 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CGalter Oh great! I was placing the refraction pass on top, not the bottom, so now both blending modes output the same result. So if I set it to Linear Dodge it doesn´t matter the place, but when using lighter colour it does :)
      Thanks a lot for the tip. Keep it up, your tutorials are great and fun!

    2 questions this time :D
    Are u exporting 16 or 32 bit? cause even when i export in 16 bit my ps opens the file in 32 which is odd.
    What is the element to control a 2 sided material? I simply cannot compose that!
    ty

    • @CGalter
      @CGalter  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      great question, thank you Thanos.
      Answers:
      ----
      Are u exporting 16 or 32 bit?
      1. I genuinely export 16bits when i have an animation " sequence Frames ", as it's less heavy.
      Especially if you use load of passes, like mates, light select etc...
      Of course 32bits is 4000 times finer than 16bits and has more depth, but usually 16bits can be enough for toning the image later on in post.
      2. 32bits for, Still Frames ( Even a 3d still render can take from 6 to 10 hours for good quality) it will be great to have that high dynamic range to work with in post, eventually it will produce larger files size " The Render used for compositing in this tutorial is about 600 mo for a 3k render, again with mates, light select etc... ".
      Quick tip:
      16bits → Sequence frames :: small files.
      32bits → Still frames :: Larger files.
      -----------------------------
      my ps opens the file in 32 which is odd?
      It's Normal, Photoshop by default opens EXR files as a 32bits Canvas, as it doesn't read the depth. so once it detect, it's an EXR then it opens it as a 32bits float document.
      PS: as said above, if you are working on still frame, then export 32bits so your color operations will be mathematically correct in post.
      -----------------------------
      What is the element to control a 2 sided material?
      Yes Thanos, unfortunately there isn't a dedicated Pass for the VRay2SidedMtl.
      VRay2SidedMtl, is a Fake hack to simulate thin translucent.
      from my experience this material do no work it all in multipass for two reasons:
      1 - It's fake, so mathematically it won't blend in with the other passes,
      for example, if you want to use the vraylightselect to control a light behind the 2 sided material object, it won't be possible, it doesn't even appear in the lighting pass or any other passes!
      2 - No dedicated pass.
      Solutions :
      A - you can use the VRayFastSSS2, works nicely and it has a pass element. one downside to that is that it's slow to render and it takes time to configure.
      B - Since the VRay2SidedMtl is faster to render than sss, you can configure it in render and leave it as it is.
      C - Refraction, you can use a VRayBlendMtl material with two regular VRayMtl and play with the refraction. so you can have the font as a base " no refraction" and the back translucent as a coat " with refraction ". this way you have the refraction pass, the light will show up in the lighting pass and finally the diffuse will be in the Diffuse pass.
      -----------------------------
      i'm going to elaborate further more this question in a future video, again awesome question.
      thank you,
      i hope this will help.
      all the best Thanos,
      Ismail

    I'm actually having a lot of problems: I saved as tif files the passes, but when I compose all the layer in PS they don't look at all as the beauty pass.
    So I tried to save the passes as .exr 32bit, but in this way they look totally different from yours, they look like an alpha channel, and of course they aren't useful.
    I really would like your help. I'm struggling a lot on this issue but I can't find a solution.

      +Lelexx1982 I also was having a lot of problems. I've tried several methods and file formats, until I found that my problem was that I didn't have a proper linear workflow set up, correcting that worked for me. Also make sure you are saving as Full Float exr, not Integer.
