      When I wanted to learn to dive I had a problem with an instructor in my first class.He made me feel intimidated the rest of the course.I failed the first time.Then later I got one that was great I told him about my learning disability. I told him"Just because I'm slow doesn't mean I'm stupid."I passed this time.Havent dove in a while,but I'd love to get back into it

    What a fantastic PADI Open Water course tutorial! This would not only be super helpfull for students about to under go an OWC but also for those first time Instructors and Dive Masters going out into the field and teaching/assisting their first OW courses and wanting to teach and explain it in an easy and efficient way that is also abiding by PADI standards. Well done Marcel and thanks for everything. 👌🤙

      This video was originally designed for just new PADI Open Water Divers, but we realised soon that this can also be used for especially new Diving Instructors in organising their confined water sessions, as all skills are conducted in the right order :)

    All the basic skills demonstrated here are needed as a diver progress on his or her skills and competencies. This is a nice guide for beginners yet they still need to actualize it by enrolling on it. A good dive instructor is still needed to show the student all of the basic dive knowledge and skills in an actual and appropriate environment. Recreational diving is so enjoyable and is a very good stress reliever for a skilled, knowledgeable and safe diver.

    I first got my cert in 2008, and that mask removal is definitely the hardest part of Cert. We did our cert in the ocean in Monterey Bay, CA. and we were only 10-20 feet down, but I remember wanted to scramble for the surface. Its a hard thing to fight. My recommendation is to work on that skill as much as possible.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kyle, absolutely. For a lot of people the mask clearing skills are the hardest. I recently made a video with some extra tips on how to clear a scuba mask. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/4M34Fn18hKY/w-d-xo.html

    Thank YOU. This maybe the best tip I ever got.
    Breathe in like you are Breathing in through a straw
    Breathe out, imagine you have a spoon of hot soup that you are trying to blow cold
    I had not dived in 10 years, a review course said breathe deeply and normally. I think breathing comfortably using the tip in this video should be the standard.

      Qonita BadegesTM IDC is Instructor Development Course. It's the main course you take to become a professional instructor for PADI. Other dive agencies have a similar course but it may be called differently.

    I feel like if I had you as my instructor I would not have such anxiety when it comes to diving. My
    Instructor rushed many of these skills into one day where I did a 15 ft dive in a pool on the first day. Even learning to breathe with a regulator in was skipped.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Oni, thank you for the nice compliment and sorry to hear that you instructor wasn't so good.
      I have seen this a lot, there are lot's of differences between the quality of instructors out there. Mostly due to people attitude.
      I wrote a blog on how to recognise and avoid them, check it out: idckohtaothailand.com/bad-diving-instructor/

    I love how you should never dive when sick, however you should always breathe from each other's regulator during buddy checks (16:15)..... well at least that means noone is sick alone.

    • @saidabimelec8506
      @saidabimelec8506 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I usually do my own safety checks since most divers dont really do them anymore.

    • @KimonFrousios
      @KimonFrousios 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea with the crosscheck of regs is that your buddy's octo is there for YOU, not for them, so YOU are the one who has to be happy with how it breathes. If you trust your buddy with your life and you trust their assessment of their air quality and flow and you trust their maintenance of their reg, feel free to let them demonstrate for you that their octo works instead of you testing it for yourself.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is style, you can also breath from your won regulator in front of your buddy. Do whatever you feel comfortable with, but always have a buddy double check you.
      Have a great day buddy!

    • @ScubaDivingTips

      We should not hold our breath underwater as that can lead to a lung injury. We solve this by anytime we have to remove the regulator from our mouth we blow bubbles as exhaling is ok :)

    It's a great video but I would really have liked it if (for the equipment inspection portion of instruction) you would have included the information on the dates, as in what to look for with the dates? How long is the Hydrostatic test date good for? On the date sticker, what does the date indicate and how long is it good for? What are the other dates/numbers on the tank for and what do I need to know about them? Otherwise, great video, great detail and explanation!

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Mogle The video is not meant to and does not replace an instructor so I think detailed information like that should be discussed during the course.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Brian,
      Yeah, we thought about adding that extra information in when we made the video. But like Yggdrasil said that information can still be explained by the real life instructor that people will get. Otherwise it might feel that the video is more about explaining the workings, numbers and makings of a scuba cylinder than how to assemble the equipment.
      I do agree on you Brain, so it was a hard choice to make.
      Thank you for you response and have a great day Brain!

    Thank you for the very informative video. Look out only that when you do the control in the beginning you go down to your knees to have a straight back instead of bending like that, long term you might have problems.

    Why hold down the inflator button of the BCD when opening the tank? I never heard of this before!

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a different technique. Most people use the second stage, but I found out that they sometime free flow which can scare brand new Open Water Diver students. The inflator button of the BCD doesn't have this problem, so I changed to using that with beginner divers :)

    Awsome video. Two little points - you did not precheck other three valves on BCD and after dive would be smart to empty BCD with lower valve to release ocean water.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Pucioy, Thanks for you comment!
      Yes we agree that you can also release the water from the lower BCD valve. Some people prefer that method, while other prefer the method shown in the video. We had to make a choice. I personally use both methods depending on the day and situation.
      We always check the other 3 valves if they are working before and in the water if they are leaking. We could have made that more clear in the video, and will do that on our next video.
      Thank you for noticing and have a great day buddy!

    Great video! I really appreciated the skills repeated over and over like assembly and disassembly of gear and 5 point descent.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shannen, That is great to hear!! To be honest, we were not sure when we edited the video to repeat those skills. We worried people maybe find it annoying. The reason why we left it in is that by PADI standards you need to assemble and disassemble the dive equipment 5 times if you combine all 5 PADI Confined Water Dives. We basically put PADI Confined Water Dive 1 to 5 in order and all the skills also in order.
      Again thank you for the compliment and have fun diving!

    I ow certified years ago, and am starting to refresh skill before a trip to Bonaire. I was in the water (salt water pool) yesterday-first time in about 12-15 years. Wearing 1mil skin. Yes correct, we use our legs to swim up and we deflate to let expanding air from the BCD, otherwise we might go to fast :)

      Hi Irene, Yes, since COVID 19 started we all have to follow even more hygienic protocols in using dive equipment. A solution to this is to have your buddy testing his own Alternate Air Source in front of you.
      You still have to practice the Alternate Air Source breathing skill underwater to meet the PADI performance requirement before completing the course.

    At 1:50:45 are those air bubbles coming from a bad seal between the O-ring and Primary? If so do you rely on your buddy to see that as this is happening behind you?
    Thank you.

    • @souswes
      @souswes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man0fMeans I actually had this happen on a dive last week.
      During decent I noticed the bubbles between my buddies first stage and tank. It was a very small stream of bubbles so nothing to really worry about. We didn’t really have the hand signals to relay that information to one another so I just kept asking him how his air was every few minutes.
      If you don’t hear the air escaping during setup and testing your equipment, it’s nothing to worry about. Also, if it were a bad leak you would notice the needle on your SPG dropping on top of hearing it. But, you have to be vigilant with watching your air regardless

    • @KimonFrousios
      @KimonFrousios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely it is a dirty/damaged O-ring in the connection of the 1st stage to the tank, as that is the O-ring that is normally exposed every time the equipment is assembled and disassembled. Training equipment gets abused quite a bit by the novices. The one in the video is not a life-threatening leak, but probably enough to shorten your dive time a bit, depending how deep you go.
      Solo/technical divers carry a mirror, but in general yes, you rely on your buddy to spot problems in your equipment during the dive, especially those behind you. A good buddy should pro-actively communicate to their buddy any equipment problem or other hazards that they spot. But you should also check frequently your own pressure gauge during the dive and realize that you are using up air faster than usual if you have a leak.

    Why do you deflate the BCD while going up? Wouldent you want more air to be able to go up?

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Arvid :) Yes your deflate your BCD to Descent, but also to Ascend. I know this sounds a bit weird. But the reason for deflating the BCD while ascending is that we always need to ascend slowly (slower then 18m a minute).
      Inflating your BCD will make you ascend to fast risking Decompression Sickness. Even if you don't inflate, but have some air left in your BCD, this can then expand as a result of a pressure decrease on the way up. This expanding air can now lead to ascending too fast.
      This is why we deflate on the ascend. We just swim up with our legs. This is very easy and it controls the speed of the ascend much better.

    Do you think that you could turn out a better open water diver if you taught him Neutrally Bouyant?

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Avi, Thank you for your comment. This question has been and will always be fiercely debated in the Dive Community. This is our opinion:
      We believe that choosing to teach skills in the pool kneeing down or in neutral buoyancy depends on a few factors like: How comfortable are your students, how big is your group, the type of skill and many more factors depending on the skill.
      We strongly believe that new diving students on their first course and confined water experience should first become comfortable breathing underwater. Sitting on the knees will help a lot with this. Then they can perform skills kneeling only focussing on the skill. Once they are comfortable they can practice the skill in Neutral Buoyancy. After mastering all skills I like to ask my students in the end of confined water to repeat some skills in neutral buoyancy.
      By the end of the first diving course and before certification all my Open Water students will be able to comfortably perform the skills in neutral buoyancy and with have great trim during diving.
      “I believe that we should first learn how to walk before we run”
      Putting too much pressure on new students can even be dangerous, or make them want to quit. Remember that diving should be fun.
      Also if you are going to say that there are many bad certified divers out there, then that is for other reasons then kneeling on a pool floor in the first hours of their diving course. That is usually because of teaching bad buoyancy skills, trim skills and not correcting students during training dives to speed up time because of bad and rushed teaching.
      In my IDC we have the option to do both kneeling or neutral buoyancy, giving the IDC candidates the option to choose as a professional depending on the situation. Basically now we teach both positions.
      You can read more about this here: www.scubadivingtips.net/neutrally-buoyant-vs-kneeling-scuba-diving-skills.html
      Please also check out our Neutral Buoyancy Skill Circuit here for our Divemaster and IDC candidates: th-cam.com/video/rNMROWd23dM/w-d-xo.html
      But you can still choose neutrally buoyant from the start, that si up to you, just make sure you stay within Training organisation standards :)
      Have a great day!

    Great video. Question about the deflating of the bcd. When I deflate I use the pull strings as that makes me released air faster to get my dove going. The bcd valve take forever.
    Also, you’re saying I should be at eye level when it’s deflated all the way or partially? That confused me.

    • @ScubaDivingTips
      @ScubaDivingTips  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Juan, great tip and yes you can also use your dump valvues. However, we like to teach using the deflator hose as that is a bit more controlled for new diver students. But it is just style, you can use moth if you want :)

      Hi Bee, You can do the 10 minute float in Confined Water or Open Water. If in confined water you can do it in an indoor swimming pool.

    • @kostainseattle
      @kostainseattle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@aymenem5304 Neutrally buoyant essentially means floating in the water where you rise and fall slightly with your breath. Trim means being horizontal, in the position that you dive.
      Unfortunately, most instructors are lazy or incompetent and they place students on their knees. There are multiple problems with this. First, you have to be overweighted to do this, and this makes controlling your depth much harder when diving. Second, if you spend your entire class neutrally buoyant and trim, you practice being that way and make much better use of the time. If you are on the knees, the only time practice any skills is when the instructor is working with you. If there are a total of 8 students per instructor, then you spend an overwhelming amount of time doing nothing. It is better to be practicing something. Making controlling your depth and position in the water automatic is very important and you will enjoy diving much more if you are proficient at it.
      The reality is, it isn't that hard for an instructor to achieve. Unfortunately, Marcel here (we know each other on Facebook) is not capable of this.

    Top tip for getting a tight fitting tank strap, is to always wet it thoroughly before attaching the BCD to the tank. Do this by dunking the BCD in water first or by dousing the tank strap with a bottle of water before putting on the tank and tightening the belt. Belts expand when soaked. If you attach your tank with a dry tank strap, you run the risk of the tank strap becoming loose once you enter the water and the tank strap expands loosening its grip on the tank.
