    Thank you for the review. One thing you didn't try is using the prefilter from 5500 with the carbon and HEPA filter onto the 5300. Can you confirm if this will work? Many people would like to retrofit 5500 filters onto 5300.

      I would like to know this as well. The only downfall I've seen about the 5300 is that the carbon filter doesn't offer the filtering capabilities of the pellet style carbon filter on the 5500. If you could swap the whole package along with the prefilled it's basically the same exact machine!! Seems like it should work that way, just would be nice to know from someone who already has both instead of having to buy it to test with. Thank you for your descriptions and tests showing the abilities of both machines.

    Hi Engineerable, thank you for doing the comparison for the replacement filters. I purchased a 5500-2 second hand for a good price and I do not necessarily care too much about the carbon pellets. Would it then be OK to purchase just the Filter A for both since I already own a C535. Thanks!

    • @engineerable

      Yes, filter A is compatible with Winix air cleaner models 6300, P300, 5300, 5500, 5300-2, 6300-2, AM90, C909, 9800 and C535

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you can run the filters much longer than recommended change internals, but it depends on how much dust you have in the air. You need to be the judge by checking the airflow coming out. If you have dogs that shed a bunch of hair, it will clog quicker than when used in a clean space.

    • @engineerable

      Better to buy the original filters. Generic filters may lie about the specs, like HEPA.

    I've always thought the foam carbon filters are better than the washable screen filters. They are so cheap that you can just replace them every few months for a few bucks. So I agree that using a foam filter in front of the carbon pellet filter makes sense.

    Nice insights on these filters. Does that carbon filter on 5300 release small dust particles?? May be that why it's on front of HEPA filter ?

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a good point that I forgot, the carbon pellets do generate carbon dust if exposed to vibration (from past experience working with industrial pelletized carbon filters) so that may be why it's in front of the HEPA, however there should always be a fine prefilter (HEPA grade) in front of the carbon also to extend the life of the carbon filter.

    Do you know for sure that the 5300's carbon filter is better than the 5500's? I've seen tests (that measure VOCs in the air) that show that 5500's carbon filter removes more VOC's and doesn't need to be changed as often as the 5300's.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@FrancoDFernando Pelletized carbon in the 5500 is superior to the mesh carbon in the 5300. It's the implementation which is incorrect. The pelletized carbon is not completely filling the filter cells, so a lot of bypass air. Also, the carbon filter should be behind the HEPA filter. Dust will clog the pelletized carbon filter quickly, so it will last longer if the air is pre filtered.

      It would make an improvement to an extent. A larger carbon filter like something used for grow rooms would probably be the best, but prefiltering that with a HEPA filter like this is important to extend the life of the carbon media.

    The thing is this: the air particles are attracted to the carbon, so it snatches them when they are close and they stick to the carbon. The designers of this were not dum dums when designing this.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The range from which the particles in the air get "snatched" is very small. Much smaller than the large spaces in the carbon filter. All real pelletized carbon filters pack the carbon in with no gaps, such that the air is forced to flow within small gaps between the pellets.

      @@engineerable I just thought of something -- if they did put 10-12 more pellets in each Hexagon to fill it up then the HEPA Filter would not need to be changed out for maybe 2 years or maybe even 3, depending on how dirty the space is where you planted the WINIX. Can't get away from planned obsolescence, even with this kind of thing.
