I've always practised sumi-e with black ink only, but I've recently been scrolling through Pinterest, looking at those traditional Geisha paintings, as well as Hokusai paintings, and fell in love with them, so much I decided to paint some. I honestly couldn't find any tutorials for those, but this looks fairly similar to what I'm looking for! This time-lapse helped me see a better perspective and finally gave me the courage to try to paint in traditional Japanese style! I've also subscribed to you because I've just checked a lot of your videos and they're super impressive, and again, helpful! Thank you so much!

Yes it is water I am using and it does go through the paper and it will make the pigment thinner to make the nice fades 😊
