  • Join me today as we sew some adorable pincushions! These make a great gift for anyone who sews. I bet you can't make just one - they seem to multiply!
For today’s project you will need:
    Two 5.5” squares of fabric
Two pieces of fusible fleece (I used Pellon 987)
Polyfil or crushed walnut shells, rice, beads, etc for filling pincushion
    Decorative button
Embroidery floss, pearl cotton or button thread
Regular sewing needle and also a tapestry needle
    Fabric marker
    1/4” foot
    Thimble and grabber
Pins, sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, ruler and iron
I used a 1.8 mm stitch length for this project.
The other sizes I showed were cut as:
    Rectangle was cut as: 2 @5.5" x 7.5 (fusible was 5.25 x 7.25") and I cut a 1.5" square from the edges.
The smaller square one was cut at 5" and I used fusible fleece cut at 4.75" and a 1" square cut from each edge.

    These pincushions are so cute.
My grandmother always saved every button & kept Mason jars full of them. A special treat as a child was getting to take a jar & look thru all the buttons. I love buttons.

Yes, looking through my grandmother's button jar was always fun! One of our granddaughters used to love to come over and empty mine onto the floor in front of her and look through them and sort them by color and size. Thank you for sharing your memories!

Those pin cushions are adorable. Great tutorial. We also called that style of footstool a hassock. Haven’t heard that word in many years. I have the perfect button for this project.

Who does not like a pretty button? I have buttons that were my grandmothers and my mothers. When I was teaching I used to take them to school and let the class count them. We would put them in groups of 10 and count by tens. We would also put them in different size groups, twos, threes, fives, sixes, etc. I was a second grade teacher so that worked well for that age group. The class loved looking at these buttons, too. Who knows, some may have gone home with them. 😮😮😅

I like them both ways. Now to go find all the ingredients. Then to find one of my Dad's work buttons in My Mothers Button Box. It might take awhile though; I do tend to get lost in her box. Thank you for the great how to and tips.

Marie, what happy pincushions! I think I’ll make some Valentine-themed ones. I finally got some crushed walnut shells and some emery sand and made your wrist pincushion last week. I’m really late to the party on that one! Haha. 😂 I have some great wood buttons to use on this project. Thank you, Marie. I hope your health has been good. Stay warm!

I like the fact, that your pin cushions are so high. I made one a long time ago and it was thinner. The pins come out through the bottom of the pin cushion and I am constantly picking myself with the pins. I will have to make myself a new one. The old one, that I have, I put two buttons on it. One on the top and one on the bottom.

I have a huge collection of buttons. I have been giving some of my sets of buttons away to someone who has a little Quilt Shop. She has had people come into her shop looking for shirt buttons. I have given her a box full of shirt buttons (so she can let people go through the box to find a button like the one they need).

I just found a video on a style called biscornu pincushions, which I had never heard of. These are SO pretty! I have a "few" buttons (15 jars of varying sizes). And I *really* like your pincushion with the extra "flap" in the middle for your wonder clips. Now that I've seen it I don't see how I've lived without one in my sewing room. 🙂

On my computer's screen, they look like yellow Crocus flowers (also known as the first flowers of spring). I have seen Crocus bloom when the snow was on the ground many times. However, you will not get any Crocus flowers if you don't plant any Crocus bulbs. I have been buying small cups, pots, and other small items to make pincushions to fit into.

Interesting, I don't know a whole lot about growing flowers, but it's something my husband has been doing for a few years and we both have a lot of interest in them. Thank you for the advice! I found out the flower's name from my friend and she said it was called "Kowhai" (pronounced Kor-fai) and it's native tree in New Zealand. There, you taught me something and I taught you something, so I guess we both learned something new today, lol!

I have heard that a lot of people use crushed walnut shells, while others use steel wool. I have just always used batting. I don’t know if the other stuff really makes a difference or not, because I’ve never used it. Sorry, I don’t seem to be much help on your question, ha ha. I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!
