Oda Nobunaga is kind of similarly depicted in the anime Drifters. Maybe they used that as a source. That anime also hea Joan of Arc as a pyrmoaniac seriel killer and Jesus skinning alive dragons to make weapons to his hog army from its bronze skils. So it is absolutely historically accurate.

The idea that important people don't wear a helmet is such a video game trope. In many games where a faction has uniformed gear the notable NPCs don't wear helmets so you can easily find them. Ironic, since wealthy Samurai would wear extravagant helmets to show their status, wealth and probably intimidation as well.
I know right; ironically, it'd probably be fairly accurate to portray them wearing Kawari Kabuto (strange helmets) that had horns on them, as it'd make them look intimidating on the battlefield (especially paired with the mask), AND of course make them easier to identify. There might be SOME kinds of outfits you'd wear without a helmet, but a full suit of armor ISN'T one of them.
IDK about that. Play Nioh and Nioh 2 and a lot of the more popular warrior npc's actually wear head gear. It's more of a movie trope than a believable game trope.
Thank you and the Shogunate so much for your amazing videos. When I first watch this series, my mind was blown at how un historically inaccurate they were with this period. Although I have study their period for sometime now, the first moments of the first episode had me questioning some what they showed and your videos had helped confirmed that most of the things they showed was wrong. Its very demoralizing that this is supposed to be a documentary series and they get even the basics wrong and it makes me worried for other documentaries. Still, thank you so much for the amazing videos.
you should really do a video breaking down The Last Samurai and compare it to this "documentary" and others for accuracy. from my very vague memory they did a much better job accurately depicting battles and samurai with formations and whatnot. i even remember the spear playing a very important role in that one scene
I'm still debating whether I shoudl watch that because I really can't stand Tom Cruise but I love Ken Watanabe. I wish actual movies about Saigo Takamori were available with subtitles... there is his taiga but taigas are so long and I'm already watching 3 at once.
True! That scene where you have a warrior, knight, Samurai rams his sword or katana into the ground is shown like a gazillion times. the other scene is when they are "leaning" on it like it is a hiking stick. Even back then as a child or teenager, watching such scenes in shows, movie or games, I wondered about the sense of it, other than that it might just damage the weapon or at least reduces the blades sharpness! 😆
I`m having so much fun watching you talk about this series, keep up the awesome job! It's a shame the researchers for the series didn't do their job properly, I love the subject but I can't sit through the episodes.
Samurai X is an anime and the protagonist uses a piece of cloth to clean his sword...always thought it was the right way and seeing your video I now know that I was right!! Nice video man!
Can you point on the ningyo (人形) where they hurt you? I said it before, if it were a drama I'd be more forgiving - artistic license, dramatic purposes, etc... - but a documentary should be dispelling myths not perpetuating them. I still can't get over them showing Toyotomi dispatching Imagawa personally in the 1st episode despite we not knowing if he was actually even at the battle not to mention it was duly recorded who DID dispatch him. And let's just forget how all the samurai were mainly presented as warriors for the working day ignoring all their cultural arts and patronage. They were poets, calligraphers, tea ceremony aficionados and masters, Noh patrons and players but no lets just focus on katana(s) and ninja(s) and call it a day.
oh they "covered" ninja, great. dunno what i expected after the way they butchered the representation of samurai. what's the point in even making a docudrama about something so distinctive if you're gonna fill it with historical errors? isn't something like this supposed to tell you things you didn't know rather than things you *know to be false*?
Thanks for your honesty ! Netflix really needs to step up their research game instead of using hollywood clichés! They have the audience to set things right too. Disgraceful History channel level stuff sadly
I had an inkling that something was wrong with this series when I saw "Oda Nobunaga" and thought, "that doesn't look ANYTHING like the period paintings I've seen". Thank you pointing out the problems that I'm not knowledgeable enough to pick up on!

When I first saw the trailer I admit, I was kinda hyped, like everyone else. But after the first episode...I was laughing and crying, because all of the mistakes they made and the way they showed us Nobunaga and all of that anime-like thingies. My favourite ,,what the hell?" moment when the commander named Sakuma literally charged into the Toyotomi forces in the battle of Shizugatake alone, without a helmet, waving his sword in the air, in short, he done it in the most stupidest way he could possible do. Also, great vid, I always waiting in anticipation for your next vid, especially for the samurai-themed ones.
Yes! another "documentary" DESTRUCTION! Edit: They also missed the chance to talk about Yasuke (the african/black samurai) wich is imo a real shame because he was also there (as a guard of Nobunaga iirc) when Nobunaga killed himself in the temple.
I see you are starting your spring cleaning with a sequel video, very clever. 🤣 Seriously though, I am very happy you are doing excellent quality videos and still have the time doing table top collaborations. Thank you Raffaello for the video, and continuing with the same spirit and drive for a sequel video. Not that many people do it nor do it well.
Could you do a series where show the historic armors of important characters like Nobunaga or Hideyoshi? Especially since the helmets look awesome. I would love to see this, since I loved Nioh 1&2, where the armors look really historically accurate. Some modifications because video game of course.
Even I, a layman, had to raise an eyebrow when I saw the Monk wiping the blade on his armor. Idk, it really felt like the producer of this show picked up tropes you see a lot in anime or (in case of the monk) in Ghost of Tsushima.
Dear Metatron, In an older video you talk about effective martial arts. You placed Kenjutsu in combination with Kendo at 2nd place after HEMA. I wondered if you took Kenjutsu and combined it with Gekiken? Would that change this where they might be a bit more equal? Since Gekiken is much less limited then Kendo (Which as you mentioned is more akin to modern fencing then anything else.) and incorporates throws and grapples? Thank you :)
Metatron, please talk about the Mochizuke Chiyome, i've been reading about and it has no historic backup, right? In the series they say, also, that she was a Iga ninja, but the even in the Inagaki book, she was a Koga ninja.
Another problem i see in the show is that they use the yumi and hankyu as if they are using an english longbow. they shoot the arrows from the left side of the bow. a yumi has its string off-centered to the right to make the shot more straight and is almost never left-handed, even if we say it was a left handed bow, (which should be hold in the right hand) they sometimes shoot the yumi with the mediterranean 3-finger release....
Was planning on watching the series actually, changed my mind when I saw your first video. You really should've been the one who makes a series, since we are for a long time lacking in realistic ones.
Excellent review. A bit of a nitpick on the shinobi vs shinobi no-mono, but helpful all the same. I found your other criticisms to be informative. It’s sad that they have historians onboard but get so much wrong.
Got to say I love your channel man and I'm happy you are correcting this series before I finished it. Secondly, could you recommend any good and reliable Samurai history/armor and weapons books?????
One of the famous court duellists was known for starting his with his long sword stuck in the ground. He the would either throw a stone or something else in to the advancing opponents face wrestle him , following with a kick to the groin and breaking of fingers, then he would go back to his starting position pick up his weapon, and jab his opponent. He did it at least 3 times in 3 different duels. In another one his opponent was so paranoid, that our hero would throw some thing at him that he went full face protection with shield. Seeing this our master dealer run at him at full speed and hit him in the groin with a warhammer, so hard that his opponent bit of his tongue. In another duel where buckler and sword were used he threw his buckler breaking his opponent knee, and ending the duel this way.
I would have thought a closer translation of 忍 is "to endure". Great review. I saw the first episode, shuddered, and expunged it from the mental record.
@11:13 you quote that one expert who said "for a few coins..."etc. etc. It was true, but the comment is missing context. You say that a ninja cannot hold territory, and yes, you're right, but the ninja were notorious for infiltrating a castle or fort and setting it on fire. In this way, a ninja could accomplish what an entire army could not. Ninja were hired out to different clans both from Iga and Koga, and Nobunaga didn't kill everyone from Iga. Hanzo Hattori was one such person who was serving Tokugawa Ieyasu for the remainder of the war and then some.
im not even into Japanese history like that, but even I know, that the Netflix series is terrible. Glad a channel is calling it out. Love the original pic. Lol I was rolling my eyes entire time.
I find it kind of funny that this show came out while I'm reading the book "Taiko" by Eiji Yohsikawa. It focuses on Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his career, but a lot of the book focuses on Oda Nobunaga. I know it's a historical fiction and when I first heard of this show, I thought it might be nice to add some more historically accurate context... but from the reviews I've seen, I'm starting to think the book is more accurate... If you or anyone can point me to good channels to actually learn more about the time period, I'd appreciate it!
After watching the first episode and the "katana" as finest sword. Me saying: "Nah! This is not a documentary. This is entertainment." And also in interviews, I think the foreigners got more airtime than the Japanese
For me the best part of the video is that Metatron's mouse pad is about Zelda Breath of the Wild. I see you're really a man of culture. PD: Your portrait of this show's Oda Nobunaga is perfect xD
About the thrusting the point of your katana into the ground, I remember quite clearly despite the years passed (it was 1986 last time they aired it, at an inhumane time of the day too) that one of the latest episodes (second to last episode, if I recall correctly) of the TV drama Lone Wolf and Cub (in Italian laconically renamed "Samurai") was explained by the off screen narrator voice it was a gesture of momentary truce in a duel or battle. Are my memories defective or my,long time in the past sources incorrect?
Would you consider making a video on the armour, weapons and general equipment of the sohei warrior monks? I think it would make a nice video, since of course there was variation but there seems to be a running theme (naginatas, kanabos, the covering of the armour, etc)
When committing seppuku with a roman pilum is still more accurate than age of the samurai.

IDK about that. Play Nioh and Nioh 2 and a lot of the more popular warrior npc's actually wear head gear. It's more of a movie trope than a believable game trope.
You can't commit seppuku with roman spear
Metatron:Oh yes I can SCREW YOU.
Sure you can, it's called assisted suicide.
@@MrKurayami Indeed. If metatron wants. He gets it.
13:42 i don't think I've ever seen a better impression of a lunatic, masterfully done Metatron!
From the way you described Nobunaga, it sounds like they are trying to make him into japanese Cao Cao from Three Kingdoms (2010).
Already liked it before watching. Thx Metatron!!!!! I hoped so much you would do a part 2
It’s kinda sad when nioh portrays Nobunaga better than this “historical” show lol
Yep
That's the funny part. Plus Nioh is literally a fantasy game with a little of history.
The historians who worked on this also helped Sony with Genji 2.
Finally! Been waiting for this! Your vids and The Shogunate's vids have been incredibly enlightening as to how badly the series dropped the ball.
you should really do a video breaking down The Last Samurai and compare it to this "documentary" and others for accuracy. from my very vague memory they did a much better job accurately depicting battles and samurai with formations and whatnot. i even remember the spear playing a very important role in that one scene
Surprisingly he hasn't said anything about The Last Samurai yet, I too would like to hear his opinions on it.
I'm still debating whether I shoudl watch that because I really can't stand Tom Cruise but I love Ken Watanabe. I wish actual movies about Saigo Takamori were available with subtitles... there is his taiga but taigas are so long and I'm already watching 3 at once.
It's a great movie, I liked it.
13:43 This will forever stay in my mind as one of the greatest moments of Metatron.
Dude?! Your videos have gotten so much more charismatic! Great video! 👍🏿
Samurai X is an anime and the protagonist uses a piece of cloth to clean his sword...always thought it was the right way and seeing your video I now know that I was right!! Nice video man!
These vids are hilarious 😂. Please get the next one out fast!
This is more fun than watching the Netflix Series :D
If a single person of iga could do more than entire armies, they wouldn't rule just Japan
oh they "covered" ninja, great. dunno what i expected after the way they butchered the representation of samurai. what's the point in even making a docudrama about something so distinctive if you're gonna fill it with historical errors? isn't something like this supposed to tell you things you didn't know rather than things you *know to be false*?
Thanks for your honesty ! Netflix really needs to step up their research game instead of using hollywood clichés! They have the audience to set things right too. Disgraceful History channel level stuff sadly
I had an inkling that something was wrong with this series when I saw "Oda Nobunaga" and thought, "that doesn't look ANYTHING like the period paintings I've seen".
Thank you pointing out the problems that I'm not knowledgeable enough to pick up on!
And this is why I trust the Metatron over any Netflix series anytime!! Thank you professor for providing truth and light over such a series. Please do one on the Roman Empire series from the same streaming service. once again TRUST THE METATRON!!!
Salutations Lord Metatron, I really enjoy your content and especially enjoyed your reading of the Miyamoto musashi scrolls, I wanted to ask if you were planning on reading the fire, earth, and void scrolls respectively.Thank you for your time and content.

Also, great vid, I always waiting in anticipation for your next vid, especially for the samurai-themed ones.
nice history lecon , however i noticed those hight elves models in background , nice work !!
Love the split-second pause before "Arsenal". LOL
Yes! another "documentary" DESTRUCTION!
8:03 So if a cavalryman was in close quarters to the point bows and yari wouldn't be as practical, what did he use? Tachi?
Dear Metatron, In an older video you talk about effective martial arts. You placed Kenjutsu in combination with Kendo at 2nd place after HEMA. I wondered if you took Kenjutsu and combined it with Gekiken? Would that change this where they might be a bit more equal? Since Gekiken is much less limited then Kendo (Which as you mentioned is more akin to modern fencing then anything else.) and incorporates throws and grapples?
Thank you :)
Greetings from invicta love your video’s
Hi and thanks!!
Metatron, You're a big inspiration in my life. Thank you so much

Getting new Metatron content actually makes up for Age of Samurai’s existence.
Hey Metatron. Was just watching your martial arts compilations. You did not mention Kajukembo. Any thoughts about that style?
Got to say I love your channel man and I'm happy you are correcting this series before I finished it. Secondly, could you recommend any good and reliable Samurai history/armor and weapons books?????
16:25 Is that a Red Letter Media reference to the Tums Festival line!?
oh this is fantastic your passion is palpable
You know this is gonna be serious when the Metatron start the video with a pilum harakiri.
I would have thought a closer translation of 忍 is "to endure". Great review. I saw the first episode, shuddered, and expunged it from the mental record.
I love this video, I can’t wait for your next Age of Samurai video
Yes do make a video about the difference between early firearms.
I always wondered, do you speak Japanese aswell? I'm starting with it and your pronunciation seems pretty good.
Hi metatron!
13:42 - And that's a subdued impression of what is shown in the series.
Apart from the awesome content and daring impression at 13:42; I must say: you have a very impressive collection of tin soldiers.
im not even into Japanese history like that, but even I know, that the Netflix series is terrible. Glad a channel is calling it out. Love the original pic. Lol I was rolling my eyes entire time.
They did Oda Nobunaga dirty in this
I find it kind of funny that this show came out while I'm reading the book "Taiko" by Eiji Yohsikawa.
This is entertainment."
And also in interviews, I think the foreigners got more airtime than the Japanese
nonsense! the katana is the swordest sword that ever sworded a sword!
Oh shit, there's a new episode?! Can't wait; thanks for the heads up, mate!
eyo metatron im from portugal
could u make a vid about the medieval kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula :)love your chanel
and the differemces from the rest of the other Europe kingdoms
Hey Raff, nice to see you buddy 😊
DAmn bro. You got some quality showmanship :D
Thumbs up for mentioning the grounding of the katana right away.
Would you consider making a video on the armour, weapons and general equipment of the sohei warrior monks? I think it would make a nice video, since of course there was variation but there seems to be a running theme (naginatas, kanabos, the covering of the armour, etc)
"And for some reason, I got blue hair. You gotta have blue hair." -- -Strong- -Bad- Oda Nobunaga
