From now on if ever I have a panning shot in a video it will 100% be because there is a string wrapped around my foot making movie magic. Great video Luke, awesome to see behind the camera!
Great video. You, Black Magic Craft, and my English teacher are the reasons I started this hobby. My creations aren’t as epic and cool and all that but my friends are ok with them.
One of the reasons why I enjoy your channel so much is the cinematography. Now it's a little bit insane to have so many different shots of basic stuff when you were doing it without a cameraman and just from my experience even with a camera crew most assistant directors for a TV show would tell the director to ''hurry this the fuck along'' if they start to ask for a lot of establishing shots and pans. Being an independent content creator has a lot of benefits and being able to do this sort of meticulous work is one of them. This is the kind of stuff that separates youtube content from shows and at least imo it's nothing but positive.
I'm leaving a comment just to let you know how much I appreciate these kinds of videos. I've watched your older one talking about using your phone and less expensive setup multiple times.
WTF!!! only 3 min in and there's more work than i could have imagined for the intro sequence, holy crap my guy. cheers to you man, cause I know its a lot of work, but you take it to a different level for the quality.
Always fantastic to see behind the scenes. Can really relate to the changing camera angles/lenses whilst crafting. It makes the creation process takes double (if not more) the amount of time, but I love it so much more than just a cutting mat cam. Appreciate all the effort and love you put into your videos!
Damn that choice of camera is such a good idea. I recently forked out for a 4k camera so I could worry less about framing by cropping in post, hoping to make it easier to record crafting/painting - which is does, but maan the computer is not happy about it haha. Thanks for making this video, lots of useful info here for sure!
thank you for doing this luke. when I come into some guap Ill deck out my attic exactly like this! Best lesson was finding some one to do cam for you hahahaha. loving it! You came so far over the last 6 years! Killing it!

This is so interesting thank you for making it! I'm relatively just starting out making videos, so it's so useful to hear from more established folk. 🥰
Somehow I missed this one when it came out, but luckily it popped up on my homepage! Great tips and loads for me to take on from this video - cheers dude!
Thanks for sharing! It's always interesting to see how other people film. Now I'm wondering how many other large channels are using a wacky string pulling technique to get camera pans lol I thought you guys were all using robot arms.
Great stuff! My problem with this is I’m never confident enough in my crafting process to take the time to get all my nice shots. I just end up pointing the camera and worry about making my project look half decent. Shows that you’ve been doing it for a long time!
@@GeekGamingScenics Nice! I got a trick from a professional cameraman who said to always pull sliders etc with an elastic band as it smooths out any jerks.
Something I realised when looking up things I could pick up from this list (or comparable ones) to get started, was that there was no discussion on microphones. A follow-up video, perhaps?

Awesome to see! I'm still stuck with camera phone and $15 arm from amazon. Curious for when you were filming solo how much pre-planning and set up went into the opening shots / b-roll?

This is a fantastic resource. I've been loving doing my own videos but the technical stuff regarding filming just drives me nuts. Still working off an almost 10 year old Sony dslr with a single lense, so may need to finally upgrade that and mess around a bit more.
Thankyou for this! Has helped a lot. Asked Josh the other day about stuff regarding this (was the least helpful question ever) but I have some idea now thanks to you both. Gonna give it a go later in the year and attempt to make painting videos. Not the most interesting thing but it's something to do and should hopefully help a few people and give me something to focus on to help with my mental health. I'm excited but i'm also shitting myself 😂
Thanks for this gents, it's really useful. Are you also planning to do a video about how you plan your shots, or are there any courses in skillshare you would recommend? Having the right kit is great, but one doesn't get videos like yours just by throwing gear at them and I don't have a clue where to start. And where does one buy a Josh? :D
I'm about to sign up with SkillShare. What specific course would you recommend for anything hobby video related? I wanna record myself painting models and building things.
I just use a phone. I can't afford a camera and lights and mics and stuff. Anyone should just use what they have available to start (if they can’t afford something better). You can always upgrade at any point in time.
This is great. I just have trouble justifying spending so much on camera gear for the amount of views I get, but I'm not happy with the results of just using a webcam. I really wish I could make painting tutorials that have a high enough quality without having to spend a lot of money. I am notoriously cheap.
@@GeekGamingScenics there's also the issue of mounting the camera. The way I paint the camera needs to be over my shoulder as I don't hunch over the desk when I paint. It's a real pain to frame. I know also that £200 isn't much for a camera but it's also a really nice airbrush and a bunch of minis. As much as I'd really like to teach and help people paint I've realized that my hobby is painting and not video making. I just get frustrated because I think I have a lot to offer.
