what is math rock?
math rock is a relation to post-rock, a better known indie-rock style that shares similar aesthetics. where post-rock has distinct jazz influences, math rock is the opposite side of the same coin -- it's dense and complex, filled with difficult time signatures and intertwining phrases.

What an honour to be included in this list! The song “idea” is one of my oldest songs, I wrote and recorded when I was 18. No one knew the song back then, it’s so interesting that it’s heard by a lot of people here now ;) Thank you!!
oh wow, didn't expect any members from the playlist to show up :D. and of course! wanted to share this beautiful song out into the world.
Might i ask from what band you are, unfortunately i cannot read the names.my bad
Nvm found it
I had no idea of what you were talking about until I heard the song. And yes, it is nice indeed.
That's amazing man! It's such a great song, I hope you're proud of it. I think you're doing something great here ありがとうございます〜
if anyone's wondering why it's called math rock, it's because it uses alot of odd time signatures (basically where you feel the beat of a song) which is why the beat feels all over the place.
THANK YOU I was so confused, like, "should I do my math homework to this playlist? specifically math??"
@@eckamirceb7729 the asians in a desperate attempt to keep math grades up developed songs that make your brain better for math, but only math. I cant wait for when they create geography rock
@@eckamirceb7729 You can usually tell it's math rock or something similar if you try to tap your hand with the beat and find you can't ever really get it quite right.

i think its important you know how bad of a joke that was
and i loved it
"Math rock is a style of rock music that emerged in the late 1980s in the USA and Japan, having Progressive Rock as its main influence and origin, which is why it is usually considered a subgenre of this style. It is characterized by the complexity of its rhythms and the rareness of its structures. It handles extreme spaces and times, and in the same song you can hear a harmonious melody and a distorted riff."
this is the wikipedia definition of math rock, idk if it´s correct but i feel that its pretty accurate
this has jazz influence
No love for Post-Hardcore, the other big stylistic influence? For shame, Wikipedia.
@@noesunyoutuber7680 i did a quick research because i didn't see any explanation of this genre in the comments. it's not that deep but i think it gets the basics
guess that's why it sounded like prog meets indie stuff to me
@@noesunyoutuber7680 is absolutely right, Wikipedia seems to ignore the *extremely* clear punk/hardcore origins of the genre and it's disgraceful.
If this was in your recommendations you have a good taste in music
you too
I searched for this so I guess I have wonderful taste
you're wrong. i listen to kpop
Or just fortunate to experience this cool genre. Perfect timing too cause I was looking for a new genre to jump into
thanks, i know i do.

I'm 59 and never knew there is such a thing as math rock. I feel enriched.
It’s a beautiful genre, I’m so glad you happened upon it!
My favorite math rock bands currently:
TTNG
Chon
Toe
grew up in the grunge era, stumbled onto some awesome bands this pandemic. Midwest emo is in the same vein as math rock, with big interval note jumps. You might also like that genre. I think the best mashup of both genres is the band Covet, their guitarist Yvette Young is seriously talented and posts solo renditions of the songs in her TH-cam channel.
@@Ri-Ci Thanks very much R S.
Check out Animals as Leaders if you like a metal flavor.
And check out Cleric, if you want to explore completely messed up avantgarde mathcore.
Thought this was a playlist to study to when studying for math- guess I’m wrong but it’s a vibe here
I mean I'd still study maths to this. Its calming 😅
I'm learning math now while listening to this (:
im using it while i study for math lol
It's totally Math music to me tho
Yeah, it's called math because the complex and ever changing time signatures require some mental gymnastics to do. Don't mean to sound like a douche smartass, just thought to share if you were curious.
dude nice playlist !! aahjsdfhgj I'll listen to it while drawing

it's a really messy and free genre of music i can tell you that much
@@ludwigdion well whatever it is, I really enjoy it :)))
It has a lot to do with polyrythms and odd time signatures
calculated mess of serendipity
I heard it came to be after Herb Ellis fucked a calculator
Math Rock is just Slice of Life music in real life.
why does this fit perfectly lmao
You’re not even LYING, haha. A lot of the most peaceful and eventful days I’ve had, was when I was listening to Math Rock!
Japan seems to have everything when it comes to music.

Just found out that this is actually better than lofi when it comes to studying!
Try some post-hardcore. Maybe Atheist's Cornea by Envy. Really good for studying.
ngl, lofi is boring
@Manusia Jawa when it's too interesting I get distracted from what I'm studying I just want it to be bg music, I thought that was the point of lofi beats haha
@@manusiajawa715 i mean i like it, i wouldn't call it bad. i guess it depends on your taste, but some songs definetly can lull you to sleep. As with anything, mixing it up is key for me.

It's a shame that i only just now have stumbled upon this genre this sounds fucking awesome
After years of trying to get my friends and family to listen to math rock groups, it's just awesome to see anyone new appreciate this kind of music
hey better late than never !
I love the fact that Japanese music (besides Anime, AKB) is getting the attention it deserves (●´ω`●) this playlist is beautiful , I’ve fell in love since the first note of that guitar jam.
Always knew the japanese had good music since death note and ergo proxy
Math rock in general is an amazing genre. So nice, I would listen to it for hours
@@Despotic_Waffle every ethnicity has good music
I got into this anime FLCL and was looking for music sounding like that. eventually my search brought me here
yo this playlist actually changed my life back in 2020. Never said thanks. Thank you for making this!
Born in 91'grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s. Glad to see math rock is still alive, and there are still people discovering the genre today
More than just still alive, it's having somewhat of a Renaissance in large part thanks to the popularity of guitarists Like Ichika Nito
Math rock Is basically a heavier clean Guitar centred jazz
"jazz but on the right notes"
The single most comforting thing, as someone who hasn’t listened to any math rock before and is a little intimidated by the genre, is hearing the first song and instantly recognizing it. I know there’s no way you could’ve taken that into account, but thanks.

the Tokyo Ghoul √A opening took me by surprise. I think i'm still the only one of my friends who likes it

Honestly, I love both openings. The second one took a bit more time to get used to, but they really put in some great work into both of them.
back then I used to think the ✓A opening was boring but I've learned to love it as I grew up :)
I’m really happy that there are more channels like this popping up in my recommended
I saw Tricot supporting Pixies in 2014. Just blew me away, never heard anything like it before, loud as fuck, mad energy, the girls are beautiful and the whole setlist was just blasting. Best of all it was my then 13 year old son's first gig and he was well into it, I've taken him to plenty of concerts since but that one is still his favourite.
I'd never come across tricot before I found them on spotify one day by sheer coincidence. Good stuff.

österreich is such an underrated band omgg.
in fact all math rock bands are underestimated, unfortunately
As someone who's a fan of extreme metal and hardcore punk, the time signatures are nothing entirely new.
Normal Japanese indie rock is already very calming for me, so adding that prog rock weirdness already adds to the fun. Great playlist, keep it coming. \m/

I have ADD and have very similar feelings about this genre! It's like... This music is how my brain works. Just a stream of consciousness, not too repetitive, but everything flows so well.
I highly recommend you look up the band Covet! They're who got me started on Math Rock.

This style of music, whoaaa...I’ve never heard of this style of music before, and I’m already enamoured!!! Incredible!! Thank you so much for sharing this music!!!!!
so if anyone wants more eccentric, interesting, and breathtaking music like this, you can always listen to midwest emo music, the genre mostly dwells on the bittersweetness of Adolescence, if you want to take a shot, I recommend you to start by listening to "words that rhyme with different, etc." by sports. (the full stop is a part of the band's name), "always focused" by tiny moving parts, and the more iconic "never meant" by American Football, which was the song that kickstarted the entire genre of midwest emo to branch off from math rock to be its own thing
Happy to have found this in my recommendations just now. The music takes everything I love about several different genres and mashes them up in a delicious audio feast.
