    So our coaches are tweaking slight footwork and the Bears coaches are trying to teach Caleb to not throw it to defensive players. I'll take it

      To be fair, the Bears’ coaches are also adjusting Williams’ footwork and mechanics to suit their offensive system and preferences. We just have such a failure mentality here in Minnesota Vikings’ fandom that perfectly normal coaching is considered the harbinger of doom and a sure sign that McCarthy is a bust.
      The reports about how the other top prospects are doing reveal that McCarthy is ahead of them all. But lets ignore that as a fanbase. We pride ourselves on not having nice things. So instead, let’s hyperfocus on McCarthy having to adjust how he takes a snap in the shotgun because KOC prefers left foot forward. Harbaugh didn’t want it the same way so McCarthy will absolutely fail as nobody could possibly learn to put one foot forward after having them parallel for two years. The horror!

    I think what O'Connell said pre-draft was that the above the waist mechanics are hard to teach, and that he was looking at a prospect who could learn the stuff below the waist, i.e. the footwork, the stances, things like that, so that all checks out for sure. I'm guessing one of the main things that they're going to try to do is make sure he's constantly using the newly taught footwork, whereas if you throw him into a game, he's more likely to fall back on previous instincts, i.e. his older footwork, which could derail progress. That's why I think he'll sit for quite some time, and they're probably not going to rush it, because it takes quite a bit of time to develop new muscle memory that overwrites the old muscle memory.

    • @intrepidfool
      @intrepidfool 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Kind of. Except this type of footwork doesn’t require significant conditioning the way that arm mechanics would. A lot of what they are working on is related to timing (lead foot, number of steps, etc.) and not related to delivery of the football (heel clicks, hopping, alignment, balance). Footwork, touch, accuracy are all things that every QB will work on throughout their career. But McCarthy doesn’t have any glaring issues that would prevent him from starting week one.
      He will have mastered the footwork adjustments that KOC desires in his scheme long before he has a starter’s understanding of the scheme and playbook. The mental side is the hurdle to clear before starting. I believe he is a football first guy that will absolutely work on Tuesdays. It wouldn’t surprise me if McCarthy wins the job before week one.

      The elephant in the locker room. It doesn’t get talked about enough that our o line was what actually killed us in ‘22, of course Cousins “I was going to be sacked” pass to tj gets the spotlight, but remember all the false starts, bad snaps, and tripping the qb throughout the year. It’s the mistakes on first and second downs that add up but are forgotten when the qb can’t beat the pressure on 3rd or 4th, but who let the pressure come?

  • @intrepidfool
    @intrepidfool 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Every rookie needs some adjustments moving to the NFL. The other top QBs will also need to learn to operate an offense under center, playaction from under center, call plays in a huddle, and make adjustments at the line of scrimmage. There are always things to learn and McCarthy has some advantages starting 28 games in Harbaugh’s offense.
    Additionally, every QB moving to a new offense, whether new team or new OC, will have to adjust their footwork and tweak their mechanics. The left foot forward tweak for taking shotgun snaps in KOC’s offense is different than the parallel feet Harbaugh wanted at Michigan. Not a big deal, just a coaching preference.
    He doesn’t have any glaring footwork or mechanical deficiencies or things to unlearn. The only top prospect that needs a mechanical overhaul is Maye. (Penix has a funky delivery and low release, but I don’t think anyone will try to fix it. He is 24 and you might do more harm than good trying. Just live with it like Rivers.) The other four don’t need a redshirt year to fix something broken.
    The only thing in the way of McCarthy starting are his understanding of the scheme and playbook. Footwork, accuracy, and touch are things all QBs work on throughout their career. JJ’s won’t prevent him from starting as soon as he is mentally ready.

    • @intrepidfool
      @intrepidfool 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RednGoneWhy not? Plenty of QBs start right away and have success. Plenty of QBs that wait still fail. There isn’t some recipe for success.
      The only reason Love sat is because he had an HOF QB in front of him. If the Vikings had a top 15 QB on the roster, McCarthy would sit the season as that would give the Vikings the best chance to win.
      But they don’t. The Vikings have a journeyman backup and spot starter that they picked up as a bridge and emergency guy. As soon as McCarthy has the playbook and scheme down, he should start. There is zero evidence to support waiting. That is simply fear or making excuses for guys that fail. If he is good enough, he will succeed.

    Anyone that thinks JJ needs a year to sit doesn't know him. JJ is best when you throw him in the fire. If he makes a mistake, it focuses him to eliminate that mistake and he doesn't do it again. JJ is the type that you should throw to the wolves. He's going to grow fast. You might have ups and downs this year, but let's be honest, nobody is expecting much with Darnold, either. Start JJ and let him learn. Adversity makes him better.
    As a lions fan, i hate that he's in Minnesota. Was hoping to buy his Jersey, but I can't do that.
    Good luck in 15 of your games next year. I want to see JJ win and be as good as his potential is.
