Most of them are not self priming, and in case of a power cut it would burn out the pump and the purpose of having a filter is not lost. One tips to add I always put a screen or papercover in front of the aquarium to restrict ambient or natural light ,it gives good result to restrict algae growth..water evaporation is a problem but fan must for Indian summer,also oxygen pump during light off period keep bacterial colony healthy. And for shrimps I put a bacter ball inside aquarium during vacation.i make fish food puria in specific quantity and fertiliser doses in small homeopathic containers and my neighbour or househelper do the job during vacation.

@@MayurDevAquascaper yes leaving the fish in such condition is risky. Apart from medicine the fishes will need API nutroplus mixed with food everyday for recovery, in your absence who will do that. One thing can be done, give all the fish half an hour salt bath in a separate tank and then return all the fishes to the original tank except ill fish where you can see symptoms. And tell your fish care taker or food giver to add 5-10 ml liquid bacteria in middle of your vacation.It will take care of any unnoticed ammonia spike in the aquarium in your absence

what I follow. first my filter, light and CO2 solinoide is backed by UPS . Light and CO2 is connected via smart plug. so the timing is set and its I need not bother, even when I am home. before I gonon vacation for two weeks I give more frequent good quality food. before I ho on vacation, one or two days before I change the water byb50 to 60%. for vacation upto a week I do not arrange for food. the algae in the tank is enough for the fishes. the fertilizer for plants are not added during vacation. more than one week I arrange for help from friends to give food daily.
