      The strike zone was called both ways. Maddux got calls and Glavine sure did the games b4. It was a wide strike zone and Marlins were smart enough to use it! Braves left batters on base n Tucker couldnt catch a flyball in outfield. Was a great game but Marlins were just the better team! Bobby Cox, who would complain about anything and everything, interestingly did not criticize the strike zone after the game - saying something along the lines of "the strike zone was what it was and we didn't adjust to it." Everyone knew the Braves pitching staff got a liberal strike zone in those days and Cox was careful to not upset the apple cart.

      Anonymous Commenter the problem was that he was consistent in a way but it still damaged the Braves more. Thing was he had a wider strike zone for left-handers than for right handers, particularly outside. The Marlins only had three left handers in their lineup-the Braves had six.

      The only reason FOX Sports ultimately won this battle is pretty apparent in this very broadcast: the scoreboard graphic.
      NBC has no excuse frankly. They're showing you scores of that day's NFL games as often as they show you the score of THIS game.
      Fox already had the constant scoreboard graphic the year before (you can see in the 96 NLCS).

    From what I can gather, Gregg at the time was "subtly" protesting the incoming flux of tv strike zones that were appearing at the time, he apparently was not alone in this and other umpires in the league began calling purposely egregious zones in protest, this is just the most famous example. Some, like Joe Brinkman, made their zones absolutely tiny.

    • @ADEAL918
      @ADEAL918 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The issue in this game was that while Gregg was rather consistent in his ridiculously wide strike zone, (which was wider than usual even for him, though he was always known to have a wide strike zone, but not like this) it was wider outside off the plate for left-handed batters than it was for right handers and the Braves had six left-handers in their lineup, vs. only 3 for the Marlins

    • @DNSKansas
      @DNSKansas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brinkman shrunk his zone when he went from the outside protector to the inside in 1980, then he took it to ridiculous proportions later in his career. Look at the 1998 ALDS game when he squeezed Gooden and ejected Hargrove in the first

      even more brutal that Eric Gregg an umpire, can just destroy a game like that. I remember watching this live on TV and howling about how bad that zone was. Makes me laugh how people complain about strikes barely out of the zone and then I mention this game and they have no idea. The score card for this game would be hilarious.

I'm merely showing a knowledge of the game and pointing out factors that led to Atlanta losing, denoting that no game can be "given" by a strikezone. Both pitchers had Gregg's wide zone advantage to put hitters away. Livan beat Maddux. Simple as that.

    I mean, what Gregg did in this game was egregious, but having never seen this (dude, your page is incredible already), it wasn't Gregg's fault the Braves couldn't cash in with 1st and 3rd and NOBODY OUT in the first inning. That set the tone and reinforced the same problems Atlanta had in October going back to 1991.

      Actually, it WAS Gregg's fault they couldn't cash in with 1st and 3rd and nobody out in the 1st. He called strikes on Chipper, McGriff and Klesko on pitches that were easily over a foot off the plate. It was RIDICULOUS.
