  • www.democracyno... - One of the greatest novelists and writers of the 20th century has died. Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez passed away Thursday in Mexico at the age of 87. It has been reported that only the Bible has sold more copies in the Spanish language than the works of García Márquez, who was affectionately known at "Gabo" throughout Latin America. His book "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is considered one of the masterful examples of the literary genre known as magic realism, and it won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. The Swedish Academy described it as a book "in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent's life and conflicts." We air clips of him speaking in his own words about writing his acclaimed book.

The things that Gabriel García Márquez says in that book are not fiction here, in the colombian caribbean coast. Here you'll always find people that will tell you stories like those.

Wonderful Book by a great author, there is no other masterpiece like hundred years of solitude. I read translation in Persian, one of the most successful books translated into Farsi.
Gabriel Garcia Marques is a magician in storytelling.

As a man of mixed Latino heritage I loved this man. I read Cholera first and it's my favorite, though One Hundred Years was read later and, well . . . he deserves these accolades.

I came to know about this in 1984. This book was published in Spanish. The president of India read this book in Spanish well before it was translated in English. There is a mention of Fiedel Castro. There is a sentence "no body has died here", what it means. After a lapse of 38 years I am going to read it. There is no internet copy available to download.

At first I thought his book was horrible! The morals, the incest, the horrid scenes of mass destruction. Then I did a research paper on the book and started comparing real life events to the scenes in the book. This man was a genius and while I don’t love the book fully, I can’t deny the genius of Gabriel Marquez Garcia in the use of historical events in this book.

The Nobel Prize is awarded for a body of work over years, not a single piece of work (like the Pulizer).

Nobel Prize could be awarded for a single work. The first asian ever to win the prize, indian poet and story writer rabindranath tagore, wrote in bengali exclusively (later he started writing in English); in 1913 he published a collection of his bengali poems, Gitanjali (song offering), which he himself translated into English, and that same year he was awarded the prize based on that single book.
