For anyone who doesn't experience Winter weather (and maybe for those that do) when the temperature ir right around freezing is when roads are the worst. Nothing more dangerous than the mixture of frozen/liquid you get then.

Yep. I can deal with it being slick when I expect it to be slick. Really hard when it’s a mix and you expect it to be just wet and it’s actually frozen.

    • @DaryleTilroe
      @DaryleTilroe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Except it gets bad again at about maybe -20C and lower when things start to really freeze solid again, polish up, salt stops working, and even your winter tires start to harden up. Oh and all the exhaust condensation makes intersections a completely skating rink.

So there I was this morning in my nightshirt, after breakfast, checking the e-mail, and on a whim I opened TH-cam. Hey, Matt and the gang were off to rescue three or maybe four trucks from various snow drifts. I really got involved in this story, right down to the feel of snow on my face and fingers frozen to cold steel. As they delivered the trucks to the bank parking lot, I started thinking "Damn, I need to get dressed--and be sure to put on my Alaska parka, because that snow outside is going to be cold. Oh, hold on. There''s no snow on the ground here on the Olympic Peninsula." You had me for a moment. But I got dressed anyway and cleaned out the sink drain, a task not so exciting, but age appropriate..

Just one of Lizzie's many talents, seriously. The ability to nap at the drop of a hat (or a snowflake) is medically proven to keep you sharp as long as it's under 45 minutes.
Trevor, hang on to those show shoes. It doesn't take long to get the hang of them and then you'll want them around all the time. Throw them in the back of the Bombi, wrapped up of course. They'll reduce your horizontal count considerably. Swing your leg out slightly away at the knee to keep them clear of each other. Might even work in soft sand!
In general, what possesses you to go into snow territory without chains? Rudy spent four years in Canada. He knows this stuff. 'Course he's not the boss, so whatever.
Send the Bombi to Rory, tell him to make it Trailmater bulletproof and send it back. With a small block of some kind in it. Three cylinders, then six cylinders when it feels so inclined just doesn't make the cut.
Or get that beautiful monster you showed at Robby's. Obviously came from a ski resort but it can make its own dang road with that plow and it will take a monster winch, bigger than anything I've seen on any show so far.
Love you all and congratulations to Trevor's son and his bride. May they live long and happy.

    Never spin you wheels!
Finally at 11:48 you guys got it right.
Spinning wheels in snow does 4 things for sure:
    1. Digs you in.
    2. Melts the snow.
    3. Loads the treads of the tire with melted snow that turns to ice.
    4. also creates ice where you dug in under the tire.

No, they are not related. Lizzy is indeed a daughter of Matt's best friend, and has known her since she was little. Rudy is Matt's son from his first marriage and is part Canadian and I think has dual citizenship. The rest, not certain where he met them but they are not part of the family biologically.

I have an F250 and I keep a gnarly set of ice breaker chains behind my drivers seat, along with a few tools. That truck is so heavy it stays on top of nothing. It has the power, in fact maybe too much. Its just so heavy. I have had people ask me to pull them out of places I simply will not take my truck. Last time I pulled a guy out I brought 3 - 200 foot logging cables and stayed on the road. I pulled him 200 feet, hooked to the next cable and pulled him 200 more feet and hooked to the next cable and pulled him out. If I had drove down that muddy hill I would have never seen my truck again. We made a wrap around a 4 foot fir tree with some pallet boards so we wouldn't hurt the tree pulling the cable across it. We are in western Washington so our obsticles are a little different than your but I love watching your recoveries. One of our different tools is a chainsaw, so when someone gets high centered over a down log we can cut it out. We have a lot of mud in the off seasons and huge ruts in the summer from people going where they really shouldn't in the winter. Lots of fun Matt and Crew !

Matt, just curious. Have you ever thought about getting a gooseneck trailer to haul your equipment (the Bombi, the Banana, or the Morrvair) around when you have to go on long trips? It’s easier to turn around, no jackknifing your bumper pull trailer.

Another set of amazing recoveries🙌🏾! Why do you all opt not to carry MaxTracs as a traction aid in the event you can not turn around on a shelf road and/or snatch the truck out? And hats off to Matt for the Mountain Man of the year award doing all recoveries in a short sleeve button up with no gloves!

I enjoyed this so much, I decided to watch it a second time. It’s a funny story…a girl is bored so she decides to go for a drive…good thing she has a good job at the bank. I wouldn’t want to have to pay the recovery fee.
Casey LaDelle has been doing some awesome snow recoveries as well. This one is for sure on the same level.
Such a great crew/team. Very entertaining. Thank goodness no one had any chains. Otherwise this video may not have been possible. 😎⛄️🇺🇸

You guys are killing me with the lack of tire chains!! I grew up in Eastern Utah, lived in Salt Lake, then moved to Alaska for 10 years. In all that time every car/truck/SUV I ever bought had tire chains as one of the first mandatory purchases. I pulled Parleys Canyon in a blizzard driving a front-wheel drive Mitsubishi Mirage passing full size trucks, SUVs and semis because I HAD CHAINS!! What size are the tires on the Ford, I'll send you some!!

I love your content and it never gets old! And I know Matt gets a ton of “suggestions” and feedback but I do truly wonder why they don’t use traction boards? I have had to both be pulled/pulled/dug etc and traction boards can help greatly! Especially when in slippery conditions.

@@alexhulinsky7954 thanks man! I figured it was answered in some video. He is definitely the expert though and as long as it works that’s all that matters. I’m just surprised because it can make pulling more effective or sometimes eliminate the need to get pulled, also good for self recovery.

There are I’m driving it’s no tricks that I would love to show you guys. Number one is when your Ford motion is about to stop don’t keep trying to go forward. Back up and run at it till just before your forward. Motion is going to stop again and then let up on the gas coast the last four or 6 inches whatever and then back up. Once you’re forward motion stops and you try to continue you will just dig down and get stuck. Finesse will get you out of most situations.
