    Nice!
Our variations: We set our bags in too-old-to-use-for-feeding animal feed pans or huge pot saucers. Keeps bags off the ground & holds just the right amount of reserve water. (Bags have air circulation so they don’t get waterlogged unless it rains every day for over a week). We mulch the tops to keep from ever drying out. We use big construction mesh tomato cages to keep the potato stalks air flow & off the ground. We start long season indoors in Feb., outdoors in March & we keep planting bags of short season (determinate) through July, but position for morning sun, but some afternoon shade in the summer. Our summers are hot! (We don’t use store-bought spuds to avoid blight since we reuse the bags, but one time wouldn’t matter, so go for it!) 🌻

I have done a year in bags and a year in beds, without a doubt I prefer bags!! It is so much easier and you always pull 100% of your harvest. For those that care about your backs, bags are the way LOL.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Jim, keep it up.

We did this last year with some organic fingerling potatoes that we’re almost going bad in the fridge. We got a really good harvest from just one grow bag considering they were only about for a little tiny potatoes in there! Did not realize about setting the bag on the ground. Thank you so much for that!

I am using 10 gallon bags this year but the potatoes are not ready just yet but they are growing out of control. So much so that they are falling down a lot. They need watering every day and yes you need lots of compost but I find this way so much better then in the ground. I am actually investing in a lot more bags for next year too.

Got some Red La Soda seed potatoes from the local feed and seed store. Will be my first year attempting to grow them. Like the idea of the bags. Some use 10 gallon buckets. Likewise, hadn't heard about putting them on pavers and not right on the ground. Good info!

For next time, suggest skipping the alfalfa pellets, might as well save the cost bc potatoes don’t need much nitrogen, too much could push excess leaf growth. But alfalfa is a great way to add nitrogen for heavy N feeders! Happy gardening!

I am in the opposite part of the country as you, in Aberdeen, Washington (PNW to be more precise & 20 miles inland of Ocean Shores).
I was going to plant in the ground, but I am getting ready to order some potato bags, because I just learned of them & I'd much rather do it that way due to " inground bugs etc. & my disability (it'll be easier to have them raised up!)
And, I am wondering first off, is it correct that potato plants need watering up until a certain point & then stop? (& during the watering process how often?)
And.... Is it also correct that they need lots of sun? (if so, how many hrs per days?)
And, is there a "one & done" fertilizer I can use? (I'll be using 10lb bags).
And, one last important question - I don't have access to the compost & bark stuff you used, I only have "Harden Soil Made With Compost" & "Moisture Control Potting Mix" & a big bag of "Perlite"
Can I use one of those & mix Perlite with one of them?
Yes, I am a brand new baby Gardener (don't know right from wrong) 😉😁

    • @lauriehaley8591

Hi you can use those that formed eyes from the grocery store. Once they form eyes that is your seed potato. You can plant whole or cut off chunks that have 1 or more eyes within the chunk. If you do chunks let them dry 1 or 2 days before planting. I'll let the expert take over from here hope this helps in case it gets lost in comments good luck!

For me, 15 or 20 gallon bags are better bc harvesting is so easy, 1. Cut the stems off for composting 2. Ift & gently dump bag into a wheelbarrow 3. Potatoes are easy to see, put in a rinsing basket & rinse gently right in the garden 4. Reserve the compost for later use (can store in the same grow bag.) 100 gallon bags are too heavy for me to lift

I didn't mix a lot in my 20 gal bag. Just about 1/8th bag of sand and the rest growing medium )soil for raised bed gardens actually).
It has some sand but not a significant amount to make it dry out too quickly.
My bags will get the first 6-8 hours of morning sun then shade for a few hours then a couple more hours of sun then shade till dark.
I plan on using some kind of drip irrigation too. Probably an inverted 2L soda bottle and string.
That or get the wife to stand there with a water hose? Dunno...
I can always use inverted long neck wine bottles filled with water.
Leaves the surface dry to prevent weeds and yet auto waters when the soil needs it.
Just need the wife to drink MORE WINE!
