- We are splitting up some Ponytail palms I bought. The pot is super root bound and it’s time for them to have a better home. Also, I highly recommend getting a moisture meter. They are so helpful in knowing if your succulent really does “need” water.

A neat trick for keeping soil from escaping from the bottom of the flower pot, is to use used dryer sheets. I always save a few for just that purpose. Also, I get those little bags of pebbles in the Dollar Tree to sprinkle a couple inches on the bottom of the pot for good drainage. Then add couple inches of soil on top of the pebbles before putting in the plant. This system always works great. Sometimes if I have some broken terra cotta shards, they can also be used in place of the pebbles. If you have old cracked or broken terra cotta pots, always save them to be broken up with a hammer. Just put the broken terra cotta pot, or broken pieces, in a paper grocery bag and hammer away to end up with a nice pile of shards. We use the netting that is usually used as a weed barrier in flowerbeds. It works great!

Finding your video today on splitting ponytail palms was perfect timing & I'm thankful! About ten years ago, I purchased THREE ponytail palms in a 6" deep rectangular bowl. I treated them as I did my other plants. They grew LONG fronds (6') & have remained healthy.
However, one has started to tilt & to grow away from the two planted together on the other side of the dish.
I'm sure they now need to be replanted into a new home with the one in a planter of its own.
Thanks for sharing your experience & demonstration of splitting them. It has motivated me with some confidence in my newly learned 'technique'.

Just a tip if you like, while separating the two plants you can use the fork to take off the dirt it’s easy to come off.

I dead head my pony tail palm, it was dropping leaves it had mealy bugs but now I don't know how to propagate the cut top . Can you help

My ponytail palm's caudex become soggy & shrink may be due to root rot. If I half cut it's caudex & remove the rotten lower part and then try to re-grow it, will it grow again & will it's caudex become good round swollen shape again ?
Honestly I don’t know. Hopefully someone else on here can help you. I think it depends how much of the caudex is actually rotted. Just make sure when you do cut off the rot you use a sterile knife. Sounds like you don’t have anything to loose. Let me know how it goes. Hopefully it works!!!
I have a question i have a pony tail wirh a litle babie i can't separate right know, but i'm worried my ponytail trunk looks like it's been shrink a bit why? Thank you for any avice
Hi Yvonne, in my experience ponytail palms need good lighting to truly thrive. Rot is also a possibility. Let me know your progress, hopefully your ponytail Palm will bounce back.

I live in Texas n my pony tail was outside but I had it covered n the leaves got frozen so I cut them off n put cinnamon n wood clue so no root rot would happen did I do tbe right thing? N tbe stock is very hard so it should be ok right n will it grow out again
Unfortunantly I do not know. What you did makes sense. Hopefully someone else can comment on this with some help. Hopefully you guys in Texas are starting to warm up.

My pony tail palm tree is about a foot tall and recently I lifted her up from the pot because she was very loose and she has almost no roots left... The palms are droopy and some are falling off..... I definitely over watered her i did have her in a big pot but no root rot. Any tips on how to save my palm??
Oh no!! When they are overwatered they do tend to loose their roots. That’s good to hear there isn’t any root rot yet. I am not much of an expert on pony tail palms, as these are my first ones. I did some research and the forums on www.botanicalgarden.uba.ca seemed to have some helpful insight. First of all hopefully the caudex is nice and firm, if it’s mushy you are in trouble. If there is rot, you do want to cut it off with a sterile knife. Also, you might want to give it more light (but too much can burn it) and let it dry out for a week. Hope she pulls through!! Keep me posted. 🤞🏼

My ponytail palm is in a sunny spot since I bought it 5years ago . Recently I came to know its an indoor plant . Then I realized tips of leaves are gettong brown may be because of the same reason ?
Kindly guide where to keep it , indoors or in full sun ? I live in tropical/ sub tropical zone
This is my first ponytail palm so I’m not an expert. However here in Southern California ponytail palms are grown outdoor just as much as indoor. I have both my plants outdoors. One is in sun and the other in shade. Both can get brown tips and usually I have found that’s due to needing some water. However, root rot can happen without well draining soil so I’d prefer to underwater and have some brown tips than risk root rot. You can always cut off the tips if it really bothers you I would think. I have done that on mine before.

Hi there! So I’m not quite sure what you mean by “feet”. Are you referring to the caudex? (The bulb looking part at the bottom of the foliage)? Maybe it’s just a very small caudex/feet?? I really hope you didn’t get taken for a ride!

@@crescentcarol maybe send a pic on IG? @sarahleanne. I have seen some ponytail palms with very small “feet”. Almost look like little onions. If I were you I would plant them in a norrowish container. If it’s too wide it will be more prone to rot.

What’s ponytail palms lights requirement? Full sun or indirect bright sun light?
I have actually had mine in both. Full sun did tend to brown the fronds. Right now mine are in full shade with indirect light and doing very happy.
No, the red on the leaves comes from large amounts of sun. Probably faced more to the sun than his twin. Also overpoted the second one. But you still did good!
Absolutely agree! Since then they have both turned green. And I totally over potted the second one. That has since been remedied. Thanks for the insight.

They are doing good. Well 2 out of 3 are. The cat pulled one out of its pot and I didn’t really notice it for awhile, oops. Reilly loved those plants. LOL.
