    I like the red cows, myself, but then the ranch I worked on growing up had mostly red Herefords. The majority of which had a white face. Pretty much free range cattle, finished on grain at the stockyards, after we sold them. We always kept back a couple for our own freezer, and processed them ourselves. Meat house was kept at like 40 degrees, they were processed and aged in there. Had a big butcherblock that was made in the 1930's, that grandpa would occasionally take a plane to and flatten down. Think it weighed over 300 pounds. Everyone showed up for butchering day. From dispatch to hamburger meat, there was an assembly line thing. Meat to be aged was wrapped and hung, the rest went to either fresh steaks or hamburger meat or stew meat. Brains, tongue, heart and liver went to another area, where those that wanted it could package it up to take home. Several of the hands on the ranch wanted the tripe (Stomach muscle lining). The small intestine was cleaned for sausage casings. The hooves went into grandpa's buckets for making glue, and the hide was usually stretched, scraped and framed for the tanners. The bones and scrap meat left over (Not much scrap meat left, btw) was piled in a bin for the dogs, and pigs. Large intestine was usually cleaned and dried for use as twine on temporary projects. Usually gathered up a lot of tendons for sinew, for sewing patches on the leather saddles, or chaps. We tried to use as much of the animal as we could. Raised up in the "Waste not, want not" ideal.

    Those new cow calf pairs look super gentle...that is a great way to go for safety sake too. All the new ones look great. I am sure I am the only one to notice this but when Ben unlocked the truck door for u while filming was so nice to me...let's just say I wish all hubbies would think like that 😁

    Beautiful new cows and I like their attitudes already! Could save you so much time in handeling. I am really glad your farm is part of the solution! Takes so much faith and courage to be different! Especially in farming. We get the craziest looks when we talk natural stock keeping and organic gardening and pastures with traditional growers. We planted a seed in that regard yesterday when picking up our new dairy goat buck. We suggested Pat Colebys books. It really works but takes guts to implement when it is so different than we what we did before.

    Watching this reminds me of when we got Beefmasters, Same thing, in AZ everybody wanted the black. I sure liked the Beefmasters to work much calmer. In my experience anything with Angus in it and black will fight with a stick if it even thinks the stick MIGHT fight back. Good looking bunch of heifers'. God bless

      Is the black angus better or the South Pole? Please be honest

    • @cat3rgrl917
      @cat3rgrl917 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@levetamcclellan8551 Black Angus are a very large beefy breed, The bulls in less hand raised can be aggressive. The summers where the weather is 90+ degrees is hard on them. The south poles handle summer heat better, but are smaller. My neighbor hand raised his bull from a calf and was not aggressive. The combination of the two worked well. The calves tended to be larger, more heat tolerant. Decent hanging weight when finished. The meat was marbled like an Angus. I will tell you he kept a good watch on the cows and heifers when close to delivery as the larger calves could be a problem. He would sell off the female calves. He said a good bulls hard to come by. He had a strict breeding program that way he knew to keep the cows close when delivery time was near.

    I think you are doing phenomenal choice by going reds and south polls!! Angus and baldy is what people like here too but I think your wise to go to south poll, red angus and Herefords! I think the market will move that way especially independent sellers like yourself! Y’all are rocking it!
