That’s not really accurate because the mechanics of Rory’s SuicideWatch variable are slightly more complicated. If Rory’s variable is at or above zero (or maybe one) when you reach the split, he lives. Your actions raise and lower the variable’s value. But crucially, he starts the game with the variable already set to -1. When he says it’s not your fault, he’s correct. You can’t get Rory killed, you can only fail to save him. And since Rory is actually Alex… It’s complicated. And that’s when the code isn’t bugging.
It would be so random if vella put her feet on my face, like bro it would be so funny, does anyone dare us to do that? Omg lmaooo it would just be so crazy , who dares us
unwinnable bosses are the most offensive rpg move unless its set up that they just kill each party member in one move so it only lasts 4 cycles or so rather than actually trying to win a battle you cannot win
The point is that Alex is in a battle he can’t win against himself. If you don’t like that kind of gameplay experience, absolutely fair enough, but this is precisely the kind of thing you should be expecting based on the title. Doesn’t mean you have to like it, but you were explicitly warned that putting mechanics as thematic and narrative device over mechanics as delivery of fun was on the menu.
@Wicker_ oh woops you were talking about a different point. To be fair, I was confused because your point was also kind of a non-sequitur. Unbeatable bosses are in no way inherently tedious, and I don’t really see being able to instakill with one hit as being that tedious. There are way more tedious, boring, and annoying aspects to the game, it truly didn’t occur to me you were talking about the Alex meteor head fight of all things
@@saladealer Idk, Chris has said before that he doesn’t like showing off updates to things he’s working on because it kills his motivation. And he offhandedly mentioned something about game dev taking way longer than he expected in either Sonic Heroes or Forces
@@TheHawkbam if the makers of this game just swallowed their pride and outsourced the script to be edited to make some semblance of sense the game could've been a solid 7/10
I can’t believe the characters at this point are asking, “Haven’t you noticed things have been a bit odd?” I can’t tell if that’s a “joke” or just really bad writing, either way, it’s stupid.
Well, even with that heavy-handed writing people still are surprised to find out the game takes place in Alex’s head in the 2010s, so… Trying to communicate a delusion narrative in a non-explicit, more subtle way that doesn’t fly over people’s heads is really difficult, it turns out.
The moment before the comet fight is the strangest part of the game. It's suddenly revealed that Alex has amnesia about his dad, the place his mom worked at, and even Michael moving away and a girl moving into his house (Semi?). Then it's implied that most of the mystery phone calls were probably Michael becoming Proto-Michael, but it doesn't really add to anything because Proto-Michael does nothing but foreshadow Essentia's intents and even then he's still in the dark. Then everyone else forgets the world was ending for 5 minutes. Saying that all of this was due to reality breaking doesn't really work because there's no build up to it or really any payoff to learning this stuff. Alex's amnesia could have been a sign that he had he had been unconsciously traveling realities whenever something bad happened to him (his parent's divorce, Michael moving away, Semi being taken, etc), but doing so dulled his ability to care which is why he doesn't seem to pay attention to things. Michael moving away is kinda hinted at when his house changes, but it doesn't build on his character or his relationship to Alex. These events don't help form a story that's thematic or even entertaining in YIIK 1.0. It just shows increasingly surreal imagery and disjointed storytelling after the 75% mark that abruptly stops after Roy, from the dev's last major game, basically admits to Alex that players might not like YIIK and that he should just suck up and carry on. That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing YIIK 1.V get its act together. If it's good, that Roy segment could show the value of persistence.
These events do help form a story, they are vital to telling the story of Alex Yiik contracting and suffering from The Millenium Bug. How was the Y2K bug supposed to work? What was the projected problem? Why? YiiK is the story of this bug effecting the computer’s predecessor - the human brain.
The writer is definitely obsessed with foreshadowing, and he does a good job with it when it comes to the phone calls. Everything else tho is very messy, and some parts unnecessary, like the whole dungeon with the Essentia.
What exactly were the phone calls foreshadowing? That Michael was in the Mind Dungeon? The scene where Alex gets a ton of calls could be him remembering his previous realities he's been to, but it contributes nothing to the main story. Alex never finds "the question"
So weird how they constantly went from: "This game does have good aspects, dont give up creator" Then next theyre like: "This game is garbage and the creator is totally incompetent"
Yeah in the beginning of the LP they poke fun while giving valid points about the game, but like Ding Dong said in this part or part 1 the charm wears off and the pain begins

It was actually for something unrelated and very unfortunate. Essentially the GameGrumps crew are terrible people who evaded being held accountable for their behavior and weaponized their autsy fanbase against DD.
@@yosh9192 Sorry, that’s a perfectly passable line of building character, neither great nor terrible. I don’t really get why that one became a meme. Alex is aggressively shutting down thinking about missing/lost/dead sisters, given the Allison of it all. Even if it’s also characterization (on the nose and driven into the ground characterization), at least the vibrating with motion line is straight-up amusing. Or is the memery coming from the delivery? The game would be way better with no spoken Alex dialogue, for sure, but like many things in YiiK, it’s kind of boring with how middle of the road and bland it is. But maybe people think it’s really bad? Just seems vaguely underwhelming to me
