  • This video will give you the information about the process of making holes in a metal plate using Pillar type Drilling Machine

    Aim:
    To drill the holes of required size in the given work piece Materials required:
    Mild steel plate (L×B×H) = mm Tools required:
    • Bench vice
    • Machine vice
    • Steel rule
    • Filing tool
    • Try square
    • Canter punch
    • Drill bit
    Sequence of operation:
    1. Checking
    2. Filing
    3. Marking
    4. Punching
    5. Drilling Procedure:
    1. The given work piece is checked for its dimensions.
    2. The work piece is clamped in a vice and any two surfaces are filed to get right angles
    3. The mid points of the required holes are punched by using canter punch.
    4. The punched dots are drilled by pillar type drilling machine.
    5. Finally, dimensions are again checked.
    Drilling is the process of originating holes in the workpiece and the machine used for this purpose is called drilling machine. Though drilling may be done in a lathe or in a vertical milling machine, it can be done conveniently and quickly at a low cost in a drilling machine,
    Drilling is done by revolving tool called a drill the hole is produced either by giving axial movement to the rotating drill or moving the work axially against the revolving tool. Drilling machine can also be used for boring, reaming, tapping, spot facing operations etc.
    Types of drilling machine
    Drilling machine are classified according to the construction and the work format as follows
    1. Portable drilling machine
    2. Bench drilling machine
    3. Pillar drilling machine
    4. Radial drilling machine
    5. Multi spindle drilling machine
    6. Automatic drilling machine
    7. Deep hole drilling machine
    Radial drilling machine consists of a vertical column with an arrangement to raise or lower and to revolve the arm. This arrangement helps to accommodate jobs of different heights and to have the radial arm swung around to any position above the machine bed. A drill head mechanism is mounted on the radial arm. This mechanism can be moved horizontally on the guide ways and clamped at any desired position along the arm. In the drill head mechanism, provision is available to rotate and feed the drill in to job.
    The three possible movements are:
    1. Swing of the radial arm.
    2. Raising or lowering of the arm.
    3. Positioning of drill head mechanism combined together to allow the drill to be fixed at any desired position.
    The major components of the radial drilling machine are explained below
    Base
    This is heavy, rectangular casting. The top of the base is machined to hold the column and the work table. The base itself is provided with T-slots for clamping some of the jobs directly over it.
    Column
    This is a cylindrical casting which is placed vertically on the base, On this the radial arm is arranged to slide up and down. There is a motor provided in this column for the movement of the arm vertically.
    Radial Arm
    The radial arm can be moved along with the column manually as well as by the power operation, these projects horizontally over the base. This is a large casting with guide ways, exactly machined to carry the drill head, for sliding. By this arrangement the radial arm mechanism mounted on the column extends over the base. The arm may swing around the column.
    Drill head
    This block is mounted on the radial arm some mechanism is incorporated in the block to drive the drill, spindle at different speeds and also to feed the drill. Handles are provided to raise and lower the drill spindle and also to move the drill head horizontally along the radial arm.
    Spindle drive and feed mechanism
    A constant speed motor is fixed at the end of the radial arm. This drives the horizontal spindle running along the radial arm. The drive is transmitted from this horizontal spindle by bevel gearing to' the drill for its feed.
