thanks for this lovely video alex! i wasnt expecting this format, but the noodling is so pretty, i can look past my face :) thanks to thonk and making sound machines for keeping plinky alive! and in the video chat, i didnt give enough props to kay from lpzwmodules, without whom plinky would never have come out. also if anyone wants a premade plinky, he's your guy... thanks all!
the assembled ones are finished, I didn't have time. I took one in common. my first module. I can't wait, thanks. I hope it's not too complicated to assemble
I'm really happy you did this video. A few years ago there was a lot of hype around this device but it was virtually unobtainable because of the chip shortage. To me it was like gear lost to time until I saw it was open source and was happy it was available for people interested in diy'ing it. But this interview is great because it showcases the passion put into the project, and that it's very much alive and well!
I bought and built one of these about a month ago. At first I found it daunting to play, but as Alex says in the video, you just start with the simple things and before you know it, you are lost in it. My current favourite way to play Plinky is to feed it into my Oneiroi; then you really do loose yourself in glorious lush drone heaven.
Ah sweet that sounds like an awesome combination. Oneiroi into plinky for FX might also be cool - maybe with a split mono > stereo cable, into the top input, then put Plinky's verb and delay on top of Oneiroi's output.
You fine sirs just sold me - hook line and sinker - on a plinky (assembled from thonk, cos i am a diy wuss) for my upcoming bday. My soul thanks you, my credit card, not so much 🤣 Great video, exciting machine - thank you! ❤️🥃🥃
Beautiful video format, very creatively fitting for the instrument. Glad to have this creation to play with. Everyone involved in this project is amazing; the sharing, the openess, the kindness, ... Thank you all 👏🧠🏞️
This is a wonderful tribute to a wonderful instrument! Built one of these at Machina a couple of weeks ago and feel so lucky to have had the opportunity
Amazing vid @mylarmelodies! Loved the format, the sounds and your playing were awesome! Super creative and inspiring video, one of your best I think, and your videos are some of my favorites and TH-cam, so that’s saying something! Really appreciate the hard work coming from you- Special thanks to other Alex (and his collaborators and his daughter!) for making such an amazing and inspiring instrument! Mega Ace!
For the price of the DIY version of this piece of gear it's up there in the highest eschelons of most bang for your buck. Even Loopop said buying this is a "no brainer". The sounds and grit that this thing makes can make soundtracks and music for years. Sign me the fuck up. Want.
The Plinky is an incredible sounding synth. Even more so given its size. It is not just for melancholic sounds either. It’s great for a wide range of sounds. My only issue is its tiny size which requires the use of magnifying glasses for me to adjust parameters :)
Yes! You use the Clear Button (X). Tap or hold it to clear stuff. You can use it to mute recorded notes, live, while the sequencer is playing. If recording, this will permanently clear steps. In preset mode (Page), hold this after tapping a pattern pad to clear a pattern.
And it is a beast of a reverb. I am bad at verbing usually, there are very few reverbs that I can make sound good. But Plinky's reverb sounds absolutely beautiful every time.
Thonk are having occasional sales (there was a 12 years of Thonk sale just beginning of this month). I'm sure there will be one in the future, they have a mail newsletter to alert you.
Not gonna lie, I thought it was Tempera in the thumbnail. (Even though PLINKY was in all caps in the title...) But I think this sounds way cooler than Tempera, tbh!
Thonk in the UK had some pre built made by Making Sound Machines (and will be getting more I hear, they also sell kits of course) and Schneidersladen in Germany should get more too, made by LPZW
Would've liked to see the features discussed demonstrated in the video, to help me understand--as opposed to just noodling. Noodling is fine, but I was anticipating seeing these cool features, and never saw any of them basically.
Although I like the demo (my Plinky is waiting for me to put it together) the format of this video is a bit difficult to appreciate. The audio often drowns him out, and chopping up his comments as such makes it hard to follow what he's saying. I mean, unless this is meant to be more artistic than informative, then it's spot on.
Yes, it is meant to be a smidge more art/curiosity stoking (eg. what does it sound like?!) than data download - don’t forget there’s subtitles to help “hear” the interview!

Two of my Alex friends talking to each other. Lovely
🙌😘
Plinky and the Plinky Discord community of happy Plonkers and crazy wizards is simply the loveliest thing in synthworld to me.
I love this tripped out exploration of this amazing synth so much. Incredibly well done
Well, not seen a video like this ever. I guess it's a unique, random, direct, playful, sonic, inspirational, useful thing. Oh just like Plinky ;)
That’s ace and exactly what I was going for - thanks!! 🙌
Ace, king

AMAZINGLY Beautyful Tones from this Wonderous little synth ............
Love this. Its like an instant Shpongle machine. We need more Synths that do nice Brass / wind sounds

This thing sounds so beautiful and looks so inspiring to play. Maybe I can have a little more GAS for the holidays…
What a wonderfully weird and informative video. I do want one
The Plinky is easily one of the greatest synthesizers ever made. Truly incredible. I own two!

Well done, to all Alex's in this video!
Full Alception x
Perfect timing! I assembled my Plinky last week. I love it and need to dive in deeper. This is perfect. Thanks.
I look forward to meeting even more plinkers through this.
Best format ever to get to know a synth, especially fitting for plinky! Thanks

🍻Nice one and hope you love it, it’s a beast. I’ve barely scratched the surface.
PS. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 🥳
that was amazing to watch!

I absolutely LOVED the video. Amazing showcase of the tech... and mind and man behind it... and a sampling of Plinkys awesomeness. Bravo.
Love this edit approach. Seems like a great response to the Pliny headspace.
Banging vid. Thanks for the subtitles. I’m having me one of these at some point.
Amazing vid @mylarmelodies! Loved the format, the sounds and your playing were awesome! Super creative and inspiring video, one of your best I think, and your videos are some of my favorites and TH-cam, so that’s saying something!

Mega Ace!
So good I got one for each hand!
Love this video! It's so amazing to see how the Plinky community has grown over the last few years!!
I love Plinky and have had it for almost a year, and I would really love it if someone did an in-depth on the sequencer. just cuz 😇
Really really lovely video. I love how you turned the interview I to an ambient track
_The Board_ is strong with this one
Plinky! I so want to make plonky bonky weirdness too! So cool!
This is a Boards of Canada machine!
Love this synth so much!!! Would love it if you did some videos on it interacting with other eurorack modules
Damn it!! Now I have Plinky-Envy... It's the last piece of gear I'm going to buy, I swear... 🤭🤩
So good! And you didn’t even show or mention the accelerometer! What a beautiful lil box - makes me want to get lost on mine for hours 😻
this has the put a terence mckenna sample into a psy-chill track kind of vibe 😂
all about that
I definitely thought of terence mckenna and early nineties chill out rooms too

You're a wizzzzzard Alex
🤯 oops all vibes 🤷♂️
Oh it's the sounds from my dreams

This presentation reminds me of Steve Reich and Beryl Korot's 3 tales. "Machines, machines, machines... created by our, by our genes"
Yesssss - the one thing it did remind me of in the back of my mind was Different Trains, I was 100% ok with that 🙌
Nice sound ;)
Why yes they are!! 🫡
Your love letter to the Plinky..... should we leave you and Plinky alone?! 🥰
😘
1st . im buying a plinky , this looks so dam fun!!!!
2 nd can i sample the chord progression in 7:21 ? god that sounds like a beat wanting to be made
wow... so boards of Canada just bought 10 of them ? btw... it is an external reverb I listen here ?
The reverb and delay is built-in (all sounds from Plinky).
Is there a way to delete the sequence? love my Plinky I built in Berlin after SB in May.
Yes! You use the Clear Button (X). Tap or hold it to clear stuff. You can use it to mute recorded notes, live, while the sequencer is playing. If recording, this will permanently clear steps. In preset mode (Page), hold this after tapping a pattern pad to clear a pattern.
That's some lovely moody tunes. This thing really is a surface of sound exploration. Any external effects on this?
None!
@@mylarmelodies Dang.
Is the reverb also inside plinky or external?
Reverb and delay are built-in. The way you hear it in this video is how Plinky sounds.
Inside plinky!! (For the music but I added reverb and delay to Alex)
And it is a beast of a reverb. I am bad at verbing usually, there are very few reverbs that I can make sound good. But Plinky's reverb sounds absolutely beautiful every time.
A Thonk discount code would be nice ;)
Thonk are having occasional sales (there was a 12 years of Thonk sale just beginning of this month). I'm sure there will be one in the future, they have a mail newsletter to alert you.
wait i cannot believe i've never played with the Arp on mine 🤦
which pre sets are these?
Not gonna lie, I thought it was Tempera in the thumbnail. (Even though PLINKY was in all caps in the title...) But I think this sounds way cooler than Tempera, tbh!
are the presets on the video available to download ?
Yep. I’m just playing the factory presets!!
@@mylarmelodies thanks but mine arrived empty , i ll look them up !
beautiful! also - where can I get those funky red glasses from, Alex?
Do they sell these
They do!!
@@mylarmelodies I know they have the kits I think 🤔 I seen a ver 3 in Etsy or something that was built from spare parts
Unfortunately didn’t work out that way
The Loopop video already does this
Can't decide if I love or hate you for this video. My Plinky is hanging at customs for days. 😟
😭 godspeed plinky
Thonk has 1 kit less now😎
Ace. Enjoy it!!
The intro sounds just like the woodwinds from “Unravel” by Bjork
I’ll take that
Although I like the demo (my Plinky is waiting for me to put it together) the format of this video is a bit difficult to appreciate. Sounds like a Lorn machine.
Malevolent, longing, heartbreaking.
Nailed it (in fact note one of the chapter names!!)
Mystery meat synthesizer.
Hier hört sich einer gerne und von Anfang bis Ende reden.
Usually love your videos but i gotta say this one is kinda hard to watch 😂
I appreciate you trying!
nah
