    Hello Llyan,
    Im a 15 year old from Australia, and I'm unsure what I want to do with my life. I love computers, art, design, and architecture (of course). My parents have high expectations of me, as my dad graduated from the highest university in our country.
    I know it's really disrespectful to ask, but what was your salary throughout the years of being an architect? What was university like, and what are the core skills to have to become one (e.g Do you need maths or English).
    I do apologise, but recently I've been worrying a lot about my future, and I feel like every step I take, anxiety pushes me off a cliff.
    Regards,
    Me; a friendly, worried, 15 year old.

    • @glynnL
      @glynnL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I know it seems like you have to decide everything now, especially if your family is putting pressure on you. But look at what you were doing 10 years ago, would 5 year old you have predicted your teenage interests and personality? Not likely. Expand that to the next 10 years, you still have a lot to experience and those experiences will change you as you learn more. Keep in mind that architecture is a profession that values lots of different experiences. There’s not just one path to the school. Focus on being well rounded, arch schools usually want both math and English, but not to a specialty degree. If you can, call or email a local architecture school and see if you can go for a tour. Some even have teenage students come for their high school or upper form credits. Or ask local firms if they can meet with you. Architects can have a wide range of incomes depending on what you end up doing, in my experience it’s not worth making more to do a job you don’t enjoy. Lastly, the highest paying jobs tend to be higher stress, so not great if you can’t handle it well, but you can definitely make a good living in less stress environments and projects or fields that are related to architecture, but don’t require being a professional architect. You got time to figure it out, and it doesn’t have to be perfectly planned out. Lots of people go into architecture school when they are a bit older (mid to late 20s and a few 30s).

      @@glynnL Should I already know the basics, if not the more advanced skills to become one? I love building houses, and design in general, but I barely know anything about the topic. Does University teach you everything to know, or should you have a rough perception of what you are doing?
      Thanks for that response by the way - Covered up a lot of the things I was worried about

    • @glynnL
      @glynnL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Trampoleen Glad I could help! I’m not sure how Aussie unis working regards to architecture, but generally I find university teaches you how to think, (critical thinking) and not to what to think. Trades tend to teach you how to do things. Depending on the length of the program they could teach you a lot of the skills, but there’s always a lot of self learning and direction. Some schools are more design based, some are more technical, that would be something to explore when you are starting to look at applying. I’ve always seen students giving the tours which gives you a different perspective though not always a fair one. Definitely it helps to be familiar with software like CAD, Revit, google sketch up, photoshop. You can get student versions for free sometimes, like AutoCAD and Revit for four years. AutoCad you build with lines and with Revit you build with walls if that makes sense, it’s more like building in The Sims. Sketch up is somewhere between the two. Ask what programs are used for the schools you are looking at, you don’t have to know everything, but it helps to be familiar so you’re not trying to learn that as well as the content. The computer is used as an aide for design, it doesn’t design for you.
      Another really helpful thing is knowing how things are built, when you understand even a little bit of this, it makes your designs much much better. There’s definitely a lot to know but you have years to learn it, even after uni you’ll still be learning. Actually, if you “know it all already” you’re doing it wrong :) there are people that come into school and don’t know a nail from a screw or how to design or build a footstool. They have to put in a lot of hard work to catch up, but they can do it. If you can do a summer course or something to learn how things are built, I’d say it’s a better use of your time than advanced mathematics. But again, check what your potential schools want.
      A few resources:
      Books: 101 things I learned in architecture school
      Mostly all the books by Francis Ching (help get you used to how things are drawn, how they fit together) especially Design drawing and architecture, space, and form.
      Simon Unwin’s Analyzing Architecture.
      Podcast: from a fellow Aussie: Undercover Architect, Get it Right. This may be a little advanced or boring for you, I don’t know. It’s aimed at homeowners, so it’s super accessible in how she explains how building a house works from a design standpoint.
      If you can’t find the books in Australia, don’t worry, there’s probably comparable ones available, especially if you can go to an architecture school library. A huge step up is already being familiar with previous work, and work being done now. Look through magazines, books, online and read up about the work of different architects. It will bring a lot of inspiration. When you are defending a design, it’s great to use examples of buildings like yours, or in similar climates, or similar structure to establish a precedent. It can cut through a profs doubt so much quicker than saying “I swear it works!” It also shows you’ve been doing research. Glenn Murcutt is a very well known Australian architect, look at his work to see how he adapts his designs to the unique challenges your country’s environment presents. If you can find a school with a work term option, go after it. So much better to practice and learn on the job than just straight schooling.

      My advice is to just do what you want today:) There's no sure way of really knowing what will lead to success in the future, but choosing what makes you happy now and working hard on that thing will definitely make you feel better, and that in itself is already a success.

    wow i have the same workflow, didn't have the time to master revit. The complexity tend to get in the way. I've been with the large firms and recently resigned, most of them also use CAD instead of BIM specially those firms who started from the ground -up here in the philippines in other words old firms. all of our consutants (engrs.) use cad in drawings so we also use it so we dont have to encode drawings in revit. but i think newly built large firms use revit and archicad, specially in A*D*A i think they partnered up with ARCHICAD's developer. nice vid BTW

      but whem you have your allied professionals most of them use Autocad. so yeah. i dont know if that made sense. but thats that. hehe

    Why revit is involved every where , I think your workflow is great for small to medium size projects or for interior design projects . But in case of larger projects , I think that Archicad is the king B.I.M software .

    • @LlyanAustria
      @LlyanAustria  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think revit is popular cause it was developed by autodesk:)

    • @faresjawad3096
      @faresjawad3096 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LlyanAustria no it's not actually purchased by Autodesk , I am with u the marketing of Autodesk is better then Graphisoft ( Archicad developers ) but the last one is way better and easier to use , I think it's just wrong to stick to the market and not looking for a better solution .

Architect is one of my choices, I also have some few experience using cinema 4D like modeling and stuff, I have tried using Autocad and drafting since its one of my subject and i find it interesting but i am not good in math i am curious if it requires a lot of math in choosing that course?
