Note to Australians from this American -- don't do it. PLEASE don't allow a red card/send-off rule in AFL!
Every American sport and global soccer allows this. And every American sport and global soccer has mediocre, arrogant officiating.
There are lots of complaints about AFL officiating, and they do get calls wrong -- there are a lot of calls, interpretations keep changing, it's a difficult game to officiate.
But the miked-up AFL umpires are miles better than NFL and particular MLB officials -- they talk to all of the players, call them by first name, explain calls. POLITELY!
Seriously, there's nowhere else in the world where game officials say "please" and "thank you" on a regular basis to players during a game.
As soon as there's a red card rule, that attitude will slowly change, and you'll have the same arrogant officiating crews drunk on their own power that every sport in the world has.

It’s ridiculous to suggest that players should now be suspended based purely on the outcome of their decisions regardless of how legal they are. By that standard, players will now be rubbed out if they tackle an opponent and that opponent twists their knee in that tackle and is out for several weeks through injury.

Look at ALL the Port fans clapping as soon as it happened....Look what they did to Murphy in the showdown that Dawson kicked the goal after the siren...Murphy had just come back from a serious neck injury and where did they get him...They got his neck...This behaviour is engrained into Port...Port were always known as dirty team in the SANFL and now we're seeing it in the AFL...All Houston got was five weeks...What is it going to take, a players death from a dirty unlawful hit before players like Houston get a six month ban and the footy club gets a huge fine...I mean HUGE...no wonder the Crows were stunned and distracted and let the game go....not even a free kick...Houston you are a disgrace and so are you Port Adelaide!
