The movie really could have been even better without the typical Disney villain trope. Secondly the soundtrack was beautiful and next with my other musical songs. Lastly, Dimitri is now on my list of non existent boyfriends.

I love this movie as a history major because it’s just doesn’t give a single shit about “accuracy” for plot purposes. The only historically accurate parts are small, obscure details, but the ones that are correct are completely accurate. Like for context, the little joke Anya made about the blue dress (“I think the Russian Circus might still be in here”) is a reference to part of the Nutcracker performance, a Russian ballet. Josephine Baker, a real historical figure, is in Paris in one scene, and she was living in Paris during the time the film is set in. During one of the transitional scenes with the map of Europe has the name “Irish Free State” labeled on Ireland, which is what the country was called before it was renamed to the “Republic of Ireland” in the late 1930s. This is what I mean by the smallest details. The facts that nobody would even have a problem with are the ones they chose to be accurate about, and I kinda love that.

I love Anastasia, but Prince of Egypt (DreamWorks) is my favourite animated movie (also underrated): the songs and score (the first non-Disney movie winning and Oscar), the animation (if you know what Moses did, you can imagine it), the evolution of the protagonist, a different concept of the villain of the story, the evolution of sibling relationship, a beautiful message (mostly)... Also, The Hunchback of Notre Dame holds a special place in my heart.

This is SUCH a good movie. I watched it twice over the last few days and I can confidently say that Anastasia and Demitri are two of the best main characters in ANY animated musical. The soundtrack is strong, the dialogue is great, and the emotional beats hit. Rasputin isn't the most charismatic villain but he's serviceable and I actually like Bartok. They create a few tonal issues tho. The only other issues I have with this movie is the weak final battle and a tiny plot contrivance leading into the third act. But it's overall a really good movie. It didn't flop but it deserves better.
Finally watched it in 2021. Heard how it didnt do well in the box office, but its still critically acclaimed. Kinda like Treasure Planet; didnt make much money but everyone remembers it. Far as historical accuracy, who gives a damn; Disney always screws around with the original stories. Rasputin was fine, but I liked the bat more. The animation and music was sublime.

Doesn't help that director Don Bluth decided to ride trends when the film was released. How you're able to watch and still enjoy it, Milica Begecki, is a feat in itself. I watched it when it first came out in the movie theaters back in 1997 I 6 year old when it came out The film back then was a masterpiece of a film. And it’s still very much holds up today. Unfortunately the real life story didn’t age well since unfortunately the entire Romanov where all killed including the real Anastasia. But this is stories of adaptation of the real life story. And I agree with the assessment that it does make you interested in the Romanov family by watching the film even if it’s not accurate to the real story. They made a musical of it which is a slightly different but more in line with the actual events in the fictional adaptational storyline. Personally I really wish they would make this into an actual live action film not the shitty low budget film that just came out but an actual film based off of the 1997 film. It’s an actual story that could realistically work and live action unlike all these other remakes that Disney has been doing with some of their classics. 20th Century Fox may have made this film unfortunately Disney now owns them so Disney would have to make the call to make into Live action. Despite being as old as I am now I do have a lot of nostalgia for it. Even as guy.
