Agreed, especially important for shallow pools. Always have the pump on before adding too. I'll mix in a bucket if adding more than a quart of Muriatic Acid. Good advice, Thanks.
I would take an 8 oz. sample of the water to a pool supply store (usually free), they'll tell you which chemicals you'll need. Your pool size will also be needed to determine amount of chemicals. Shocking the pool with the liquid chlorine will kill the green algae. This will need repeated once a week until water is clear.
For controlling high Alkalinity, acid is added to bring it down to an acceptable range of 80 to 120 ppm, the amount depends on pool size/gallons. Ph follows corrected alkalinity which keeps your eyes from burning and protects the pool equipment.
I guess I’m just anal but I dilute everything in a 5 gal bucket first then add to my pool. I rarely add anything even the same day, I let it stabilize first. Also I measure everything precisely.
Isn’t muriatic acid counter to chlorine? Like that stuff doesn’t work when your water is chlorinated. You use muriatic acid to help scrub the walls when moving from winter to spring. It’s only effective when chlorine level below 0.6 ppm. So you scrub walls with the muriatic acid, then when done and allowed for hours of filtration you can add chlorine. But hey, if that’s been working for you, to hell with science.
It’s a year round Florida pool, and muriatic acid is the only way we can lower our alkalinity in concrete pools. The cement in concrete naturally raises the alkalinity past the desired range of 100 to 120 ppm, alkaline rain here also increases it. But yes, high concentrates of muriatic is a great cleaner. 😊
It's a good idea to dilute the acid in a bucket because the acid sinks to the bottom and can etch the surface.

I’ve never used acid in my pool. I shock it once a week and 3 blue tabs twice a week.
How to make a clean a swming pool because always Green

You never said why you used acid. I've never seen this done

Why is the alkalinity level so high, because of the shock?
