Grate shelter love the design it's one of my personal favorites I've been practicing Bushcraft since I was 13 I'm now 24 I have tried many tarp shelters,natural shelters,, man made natural shelters and but this design I love the most. Great information and video. It's good to see the use of wood that will easily rejuvenate quickly and the spruce to keep the rain flowing down the outside of the shelter instead of running through it and inside where you need it to be dry. It occurs to me that hazel is likely to take root much like some willows when it's used.

Hi Todd, yes that's the beauty of this design, utilising the natural properties of the hazel. In terms of time, this type of shelter can be built easily in less than an hour if all your materials are close by. Take care pal Ade.

Great shelter. We made one and cover it with an old tarp, there is no spruce etc where we go, very easy and sturdy shelter. I thought I had subbed you ages ago, sometimes YT forgets who you have subbed I think. Got you now, Ade. Keep on keeping on.

Good information of the 'do as I say; not as I do' nature. You are building directly below a berm and slope. But your theory is sound and the results are pleasing! Would that we had more hazel in the parts of the USA where I have lived and wild camped. I really like the stirrup hanging griddles at the end. And there is a lovely musical/video finish to the piece. Congratulations!

Hey Fellas, I'm sorry if I missed it......................... How do you guarantee that rain falling on the part of the hill behind the shelter doesn't trickle down the hill into the middle of the shelter?

A few people have asked the same question, one person even suggested a moat lol However I can assure you that there is a dip either side of the small hill at the back of the shelter which ensures any rainwater would be diverted. a lot of effort for a very basic shelter and i did watch it to the end, there are much more energy efficiently ways to build even a long term shelters, and before you flame me I have done it long term for real.

A beautiful example of classic British woodcraft, seeming to stir ancient memories. The roots of the practices demonstrated go back to the first arrival of paleolithic hunters in western European paleo-ecosystems which supported hazel. It was a pleasure to observe the shelter coming together. My question is... do your hazels produce nuts? Ours rarely do in California: I'm not sure about the rest of North America. Our hazels do not form such long strait saplings anywhere in North American to my knowledge; at least not from native stock. Eastern North American hazels are shrubby small and west coast ones have stems the same thickness as yours, but they just don't grow straight, and they apparently don't sucker as much. Perhaps because they have never been consistently cut like some British hazels. The lands where you conduct your activities are very nice but the way you slipped those cuttings into the ground was astounding to one more accustomed to stoney mountain soils. It seemed magical, but where I live any soil moist enough to permit that would be too wet to camp on.
I'm too far south in the US for spruce. (sigh) However, see the potential for using reeds (river cane), which grows in too much abundance here. Probably need a bit of vine (kudzu, honeysuckle, trumpet, etc.) for the initial arch, but that's about all. Would take quite a bit more of the cane tops for thatching, but still appears to be worth the effort. Especially, if some small green pine branches/needles are worked in, as well. Thanks for sharing the technique.
I would have fitted kingspan wall insulation and underfloor heating.. oh and clay pan tiles with guttering ... I also would have laid drainage pipes around with 4 foot rebar enforced concrete drive for my car.. and maybe a moat full of alligators lol !!!! .. Just kidding.. There's nowt wrong with this simple easy shelter, it will keep the rain off you, its strong enough to withstand a strong gale and warmer than sleeping in a shop doorway ! .. it took no time to fettle and it would last a few month and I reckon these types of shelters were your bog standard house for hunter gatherers 1000s of years ago.. Never mind the comments from the nit pickers.. Well done !

I like this type of shelter and thought about making my next shelter something like this but as a double thatched and bigger with a fire place in middle .
i like this shelter, im wondering though if it would be possible to weave the horizontal branches before the vertical ones get attached to the arch, as in weave it while they're free sanding to make it easier, and then tuck them under the arch afterwards. would that work?

Hi Rick Firstly thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave such a kind comment. The jacket is actually a Swedish Army Snow Smock bought from Military Mart in Ormskirk for about £10. They come white but I dyed it woodland brown and waterproofed it. All the best. Adrian.

Very interesting, this shelter is pretty much the same as the kind of shelter used in the New South Wales area of Australia by the Indigenous peoples of the area. There were many names as there are many dialects and languages within the many clans of the district. But apart from the use of native materials, they were very much the same construction. I guess, if it works, do it.
Good job. Is it waterproof from the ground? If it rains, it seems like that the soil inside that shelter will eventually get damp. Plus, not a good idea to sleep on the ground for various reasons(e.g. bugs).
Hi and thank you for the comment. The way that the thatching is done then it would be waterproof as it's designed to shed water. I know what you mean about the floor, which is why I slept on an inflatable air mattress. I think I'm getting a bit old for roughing it on the floor these days. Lol Thanks again. Ade

Looks good but the only issue I see is that because you have built it on quite a steep hill if it does rain all the water is going to run down the hill and under the shelter and make everything wet :S

A moat is unnecessary as there is a natural dip either side of the small hill at the back that would naturally divert any water that would come off the small hill. I have been practicing bushcraft for over 35 years and I'm sure you can appreciate that I would have already taken the potential for any surface water into consideration before this shelter was constructed. Shelter looks great! I am curious about the jacket you are wearing, what is it, I guess it is an Anorak of some sort but I would like to know what brand. Thank you.

Firstly thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave such a kind comment.
The jacket is actually a Swedish Army Snow Smock bought from Military Mart in Ormskirk for about £10. They come white but I dyed it woodland brown and waterproofed it.

Very interesting, this shelter is pretty much the same as the kind of shelter used in the New South Wales area of Australia by the Indigenous peoples of the area. There were many names as there are many dialects and languages within the many clans of the district. But apart from the use of native materials, they were very much the same construction. I guess, if it works, do it.

Good job. Is it waterproof from the ground? If it rains, it seems like that the soil inside that shelter will eventually get damp. Plus, not a good idea to sleep on the ground for various reasons(e.g. bugs).

The way that the thatching is done then it would be waterproof as it's designed to shed water.
I know what you mean about the floor, which is why I slept on an inflatable air mattress. I think I'm getting a bit old for roughing it on the floor these days. Lol

That might work in the, but for wet conditions you'll need 2 to 3 times that amount of thatching.
This one video pushed me over the edge from knowing how to do to wanting to go do.

Looks good but the only issue I see is that because you have built it on quite a steep hill if it does rain all the water is going to run down the hill and under the shelter and make everything wet :S

A moat is unnecessary as there is a natural dip either side of the small hill at the back that would naturally divert any water that would come off the small hill. I have been practicing bushcraft for over 35 years and I'm sure you can appreciate that I would have already taken the potential for any surface water into consideration before this shelter was constructed.
