I've never seen a accomplished classical & technical musician who was also an outstanding rhythm and blues player who could improvise.
Of course that goes vice-versa. I'm sure those musicians exist but I've yet to see one.
Ones about strict memorisation of figures and repeats. True R&B is all about rhythm and arpeggios. You don't need all the fiddly bits and movements etc just moving up and down the notes in each chord and keeping it groovy.

I forgot how good she was when Brendan began to play. As a beginner, I wish I knew how he gets his left hand to do the repetitive rhythm and his right hand doing something completely different, both independent of each other.
John, I had that problem in my piano lessons. My teacher was always frustrated with me. My parents told me I didn't try hard enough. My hands and brain were not cooperating with each other.

As I begin doing a repetitive broken chord pattern w my left hand switching to a new broken chord pattern every measure, the moment my right hand enters for melody lines, everything falls apart in seconds.
Either there is a “trick” to it or my brain is simply not wired in a way that is beneficial for hand independence at piano hence I’m stuck playing chords only w left hand, melody with right hand. 🙁
You just gotta work on the left hand pattern for a little while, maybe a couple of weeks, then you have to start throwing in your right hand. Dont worry if you mess up on your right hand just keep going you can even hit the same notes with your right hand over and over again, after a month or 2 you will start to build hand independency. I had never played piano before but after doing this for 5 months I can now play little Richard, albert ammons, jerry Lee lewis and more.

Brendan's blues style reminds me a lot like Jerry Lee Lewis....then I watched it a second time, and ironically I noticed that he actually mentions Jerry Lee Lewis.
Also a little like the rock group, the Doors, Ray Manzarik's keyboard style in the number, Riders on the Storm. Nice performance here!
