Marna found love! Looks like her and that lady crying on the phone are into each other these days, go figure! Also...did any of you actually know that Jerry Springer was Mayor of Cincinnati for a year? Subscribe or I'll start doing exlogs on gas stations. Back soon with the finale to Phase vii. BIG THINGS COMING! discord.gg/dmod
Before becoming mayor, Jerry Springer served on the Cincinnati City Council. During his tenure on the council, Springer was embroiled in a scandal stemming from his trip across the river into Kentucky to visit one of that state's "working girls." Apparently, he paid by check for "services rendered." On a completely unrelated note: How is Captain Sal these days? I always enjoy seeing him living his best life when he's exploring the odd mall.
Had some knowledge of it and I heard he was removed because some sorta of scandal, I may be wrong though. Oh by the way you can get into Eastland Mall and man it has gotten trashed in less than 2 years of closure!
It’s always a treat when I get a notification that a new ex log has dropped! I will be here for as long as you continue to do them😊 thanks for another great episode 👍🏻
I’m glad that I knew this premiere was coming, as TH-cam in all their glory failed to send a notification. At any rate, a much enjoyed exploration. I never tire of seeing these aesthetic beauties from a time in retail history that slips ever farther away.
This is actually my 2nd time to try and watch this upload.⌚ The first time, I was really distracted because I just gotten through with 12 hr shift.⏰ I finished a 13 hr shift about an hour ago.⏰ But, I'm comfortable because today was my last day of work for the week. I'm staying in one of the cabins here at work. My air conditioner is on. ❄️ Tomorrow I get paid. 💰 I can't wait I need some time off. ⌚ I want to gamble. 🎰 I want to get my mind off of things. 🧠 I can't wait til tomorrow. I need to get some soap. 🧼 🫧 I'm so glad & grateful that I'm off.😊🙏 I'm also grateful for this upload.😊
@jasonmartinson7758 if more of them knew, maybe they’d realize how we’re all just nerds that appreciate the nostalgia of malls, and that we aren’t criminals!
I think the situation with security is that they don't want to get fired. Jobs are scarce in a lot of these places and they want it to last as long as it can. Some are just power tripping but i feel that for the most part they're doing the job they were told to do in order to stay employed. It might just be me but I always feel bad for the people that worked at these malls.
I went here in 2020, the security guard there was so watchful and eyeballing everything we were doing. I saw in his office and he had so many monitors for cameras. It felt like he was overdoing it
This was my local mall growing up. I remember going with my parents when I was little, eating at the Chick-Fil-A in the mall, tossing pennies into the fountain near the entrance, and the annual shopping trips for school clothes. The Towne Mall was always busy, especially during my pre-teen and teen years, lots of shops, lots of food, a busy arcade, and three anchor stores. My mom worked at two of the anchor stores for a few years. Once I was into my high school and early college years, the Towne Mall was still busy, especially at Christmas time, and the record shops, bookstores, GNC and Spencer's were still drawing me in. It's sad to see the state of the mall now, just abandoned and forgotten.
You missed an item of interest (local here). Back in oh roughly the early 2010's the Middletown Performing Arts Academy had their performance venue at Town Mall.
I just started watching these because deadmalls are a slight obsession of mine (I like all things cemetery related) and before I even begin there's... a coffin shape on the roof??? NO WAY :0 1:03
It is ridiculous they don't like filming. It's sad to see another mall gone. I love when you do the restaurant scores. Especially the ones you did in Philly. Take care!
Unfortunately, I only got to see this once, likely months, if not weeks before it shut down for good. No stores were open, and no one was inside. Thanks for giving me a detailed second look. :)
Its kind of funny that if he knew you by name, then he must have seen your videos and therefore knew you were harmless. I guess he was the type "its not going to happen on my watch" type.
I did a short one here on my fledgling channel about two Decembers ago, they had Christmas decorations setup, the civilians who were doing it asked me to stop recording, I didn't. :) This was my home mall as a teenager. Thanks for this video.
900 numbers! That's a blast from the past! (I was never stupid enough to call one.) Attracted Marna though! I've never understood why it's such a horrible thing to take video inside a dead mall, where there's no privacy and no customers and nothing to steal. What were they afraid of - somebody swiping the plants?
The mall owners could/probably argue people videoing a dead mall is a bad look for them if they mismanage it for banks etc they owe money to… that’s probably why…
A local here. 15+ years ago the Middletown Mall was a decent place to do shopping and was even useful for Christmas shopping. Middletown has basically imploded and we avoid it when possible. Fun fact: JD Vance grew up in Middletown. Or "Middletucky".
I grew up going here and up till 2002 this place was booming. Always packed. Theres nothing else around to do back then. All the big stores were there. Spent sooooo much time there talking to girls and hanging out with friends. I still live about 20 minutes from there in a town called Lebanon. Always willing to drop info on malls from Dayton Mall to Florence Mall.
If you ever find yourself in the Charleston, WV area we have a dead mall. It’s called Charleston Town Center. May not have much time left but still pretty cool to walk around. Love your content!
Hello! I grew up in Middletown, and I can tell you the mall went from basically 100% occupancy to 50% or so occupancy in 2003. The reason why is the steel mill. There was a big strike that happened, lasted over a year. The mill brought in a ton of “scabs”, or temp workers, and paid them basically minimum wage to do the same jobs the union workers were doing previously. Anyways, with the income not there the mall suffered hard as residents did not have discretionary income.
We have a mall in my area that used to be thriving. Then for some reason the shut the theater down, I think it had 6 screens and was very nice. They built a new theater on the edge of the mall parking lot. Once the theater was gone the arcade closed. As a teen we would go hangout all day long, play in the arcade, eat in the food court, do some shopping, and watch a movie. It’s almost like they destroyed it on purpose. Once they took the movie theater and moved it across the street casual mall traffic declined to almost zero. It seemed to be on purpose almost. Even today with almost zero stores they charge an unbelievable amount for rent. If it was my property I would give free rent… the more stores you get the more traffic, the more traffic the more stores and it will slowly come back to life. At this point you can start charging more rent. I don’t understand why they would rather leave the stores empty… it’s almost 100% empty now.
I've seen ads now for Sunglasses with a built in Camera I wonder if something like that would be helpful in these cases... Security is not really going to notice it and if they do you just claim they are cool new tech you saw online and had to have but you don't just go around filming everything in your day because that would be creepy.
Rent the space to stores for 1$ to make it legal. Lots of stores will show up to take that deal. Once the mall is full start charging a rational amount. It’s simple… Unless a scam involving taxes is taking place. But how much of a loss can you claim before the IRS says stop being stupid?
I never understood why recording inside [or even outside, for that matter] malls is so looked down upon by "security" and/or management. If anything, it brings interest to the location, I would think would be a good thing for them. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Sal you could probably figure out a way to conceal a decent camera in a hat or some article of clothing. That cat and mouse stuff with mall security makes me nervous in today's environment... too much chance of something going really wrong.
P you might want to invest money in a hat play the old Charlie Daniels lying and put sheriff on your hat and do what you did with it before and then you should be able to sneak right through saw lots of your videos and just recognize your ass
It isn't illegal to take photos or videotape inside a mall. I saw a dead mall video someone was caught by Paul Blart mall cops went inside a Sears that closed and the gate was open but was locked inside until the guard came to get them out and asked them to leave and to delete the video and photos they didn't do that. The guards took a photo of the car/SUV plates.

Security Guard has definitely seen at least one video. Maybe he's a casual lurker :P
That ice cream store at around 6:30 had mad aesthetics.
So funny that the center space with skylights looks like a coffin from the drone pics.

18:30 makes me wonder how many mall cops are subscribed to your channel 😅
@@PaulRudd1941 another question is how many of them know about the dead mall discord server!

Sal, I watch a lot of mall video's. I found you a few years ago and I think you seem the best at this, to me. Thanks for continuing this project.
Hey thanks so much, John! I have YEARS of content in my backlog, and I can’t wait to product my next piece…stay tuned!

It's nice to know Marna found a job to call her own, LOL. I was out when this premiered. Nicely done as always, Salvatore.

If you ever find yourself in the Charleston, WV area we have a dead mall. It’s called Charleston Town Center. May not have much time left but still pretty cool to walk around. Love your content!
The city of Middletown very recently authorized $10M to buy the mall after the owners reduced the price when the open air shopping deal fell apart.
Have you ever considered getting a button camera or something so that security can’t tell you’re filming?

Last I looked, the video quality was pretty awful and recording length was limited to a few seconds per clip…maybe I’ll check again
I will never understand to this day why mall security doesn’t want outsiders to see what their mall looks like
They may not want people seeing it if it were dying.
@billp4 this
When you put your sunglasses on it reminded me of the dude for some reason.
I was an active hobby photographer from 2005 to 2018. Earlier on, 9/11 was milked for all it was worth to shut down photography and filming.
Clearly that security guard is a DMOD member.
🤣
Hahah he’s definitely lurking! Thanks for watching :)
I was there much later than you then last time and it was still there (Dec '22)
I'm a bit freaked out by the mannequin-like woman walking behind the security guard and lady at 15:40 👻
like something out of Westworld!

It isn't illegal to take photos or videotape inside a mall.
