MusicWorks - Grade 4
First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomizes his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best.

2:47 I practiced hard for that dang solo, the concert was a few weeks away at the time and I could never get that part right and one day (it was the last day before a long weekend) and I was like "today is the day I play my solo correctly for once, I've been practicing and I played it right so many times and I just want to make my BD proud" I messed up terribly and my BD gave me a dissapointed look, and in my head I said to myself that after the long weekend I will get it right... That long weekend was a 2 week break from school because the pandemic had started, those 2 weeks became the rest of the year and I never got to play that solo at the concert. I'm still salty about (it sometimes keeps me up at night) and I play that solo out of spite.
I’m tearing up
Yup I know how you feel.
For a school Christmas Concert in Salisbury Cathedral, I sang a solo in rehearsal, depping for a fellow student who was at an interview for Cambridge University. Unfortunately for me he got back in time 😢
Sheesh I had a friend play that solo
the fact that yall played this in middle school boggles my mind, my band couldnt play for our lives in middle school
Takes me back six years ago to 7th grade wind ensemble (':

Yo we’re playing this in freaking ELEVENTH grade
My entire band consists of 9 smaller bands: Winds Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band 1, Symphonic Band 2, Concert Winds 1, Concert Winds 2, Concert Band 1, Concert Band 2, Concert Band 3.
@@yannam5339 it depends on your level of band i guess. I played this in 7th grade bc we have an honors band and we are a military band . Is your band a military band or show band?
