Thanks for this informative video. I'm a newbie. Have done 2 quilts on my HQ Simply Sixteen using groovy boards. Had a thread breaks every row or 2 on 1st quilt but only 1 on 2nd quilt. New needle and slower. Happy with that. But had more bobbin run outs and never considered end of bobbin tension issue. Oh well, beginner charity quilts.

Susan, the quilt behind you features the Crazy Eight design. I’m taking an online challenge and used the Crazy 8 design on a wide border. I’ve indicated several times that I learned it from you. (I call it nesting wishbones.) Thank you again for showing this design, I still need to perfect the crossover area. Yours creates a secondary design that I love!
Susan…I had another thought about your thread breaks. You mentioned previously about your top tension being around 4+. My machine came at 4.5 and I had a LOT of breaks. I dialed it back considerably and without goofing up my tension (still sitting between the batt) it has actually fixed my problem. You also mentioned the dead bar height possibly being the problem. I thought about that and my question would be ‘why would they permit us to raise/lower it if it is specifically supposed to be at a certain measurement?’ I don’t think that’s it because I too use Red Snappers and raised my bar almost immediately after getting my machine. I’m going to keep thinking on this because I KNOW how frustrating it is!
I'm still puzzling over this one...because I do love those Red Snappers! Interesting detail, BERNINAs now come with tension thread at 4.0 as the default. I do love that as a longarm manufacturer, they're making improvements.

Starting is not a problem, but when I stop on my little Moxie, it's very difficult to pull the thread away to get the end tail, to pull up the bobbin thread again. Any idea why that would be? Learning so much from you, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Do you have a presser foot that lifts? If so, lift that first, and that releases the top thread from the tension discs and allows it to pull more easily. Not all longarms have that tho.
You’re such a great instructor, Susan! Your detailed thought process narration is invaluable. I’ve seen so many videos that show a process but never explain the why - I need that for the instructions to stick. You give me confidence that someday I’ll be a skilled longarmer! Thank you for sharing your amazing expertise!

Are you hanging onto the top thread at the same time? If so, then try re-threading, and maybe even review your machine manual. Every machine with a bobbin will work essentially the same way, to be able to pull up the bobbin thread. If you don’t have a needle up/down feature you can turn the hand wheel.
Hmmm, don't think I have. Mostly because I try to complete a project, and doing anything custom at all starts to ramp up the time of the episode. Maybe my quilting friends WANT to watch for 5 hours 🤷♀
I just love this video. It has helped me so much. I keep it in my playlist. Of course I have a question. It looks like you have several layers of fabric under the purple fabric. What adjustments do you make for that? Did you lower your foot pressure, lower your rails or change the tension.

Hmmm, I don’t think I had any extra layers, just the backing batting, and purple fabric.
