  • They are a new breed of journalist; daring, determined and tech-savvy, freelance foreign correspondents fill the void left by a mainstream media retreating from international news coverage. Independent journalist Bill Gentile introduces us to the workplace of his fellow freelancers in Mexico, where the so-called War on Drugs has left at least 175,000 people dead in the last decade, and 104 journalists murdered since the year 2000.

As a former freelance journalist, it is nice to see a documentary about freelancers. Great to see these other freelancers honored in this way.

      You're welcome.
I can't recall seeing too many documentaries like this .
Freelancers are the unsung heroes of journalism . Full disclosure of my bias there obviously .

Yes, they are heroes. Increasingly, they are the most valuable and the most vulnerable.

@@freelancerswithbillgentile2411 I meant good old days of journeyman pictures. I remember they took me on a tour in Liberia and SieraLeon during the cuvil war there. They were almost the only and the exclusive truthful factual source reporting fro there back in time, it was as if the mainstream media reporting a different conflict.

Back when Obama had his very profitable drug war in Mexico, Mexico was at its worst.... but, Mexico was still nowhere near as dangerous and violent as the USA. Right now, Mexico is doing well, thanks to AMLO.

To reduce the demand for drugs in the US, there needs to be drug education in school curriculum, involvement in schools, families, church and social networks.

    The simple truth,
Government involvement in these industries is out of sight, but we need to come to grips with . México needs to stand up and be counted in their country with a voice as to who pushes and who pulls for or against them , it's a struggle, indepence is a battle, in order to change the constitution, which states, fed can step into your home and own it whenever the México Federal authorities, can put us in prison just whenever .

Hi Jorge, I understand how you feel about foreigners reporting on your country. Having said that, I could not include more Mexican journalists in this documentary because many of them are concerned about being targeted by the drug cartels. As a safety measure, many Mexican journalists no longer cover the drug wars. And the ones who do rarely put their names on their work because they are afraid of being killed. Some news outlets have shut down completely because of the violence perpetrated against their reporters. So this is why you don't see more Mexican freelancers in the film. As a Mexican, you already know all this, right?

I've been in Mexico for 20 years and it seems a lot of Mexicans don't know Mexico because they avoid even thinking about the bad things that could happen and have been happening , I'm not even sure that it's even possible for ANYONE to understand what's going on down here. If anybody claims they do , they almost certainly don't.

I agree. Also that goofy ass all female journalist group with zero self awareness way overdoing it with all the expensive cameras and boom mic like its a fucking movie set. They make small mics with 20ft radius and 8k cameras the size of phones. So cringe
