I like your beginner series here. You should remind viewers that there are many, many techniques, and no one learned them ALL at one time, on one model. Its a hobby, go at your own pace, and learn a technique one or 2 at a time. Even as a 40 year modeler, I have at least 4 kits half assembled in the stash, burnout on superdetailing is real.
60 year old, recently retired and starting out on scale modelling after a loooong lay off! Must say that many moons ago the reasoning behind a gloss coat was that matt paint is a rougher surface so decals (transfers!!!!), don't adhere as well or lie down perfectly flush. Gloss is smoother which means a better result. Casting my mind back to my inky fingered past, when I avoided varnish like the plague I do recall my old Airfix and Frog decals being reluctant to stay put on a matt painted model. I am mainly an aircraft modeller but this series is excellent and just what's needed for someone like me trying to make up for lost time. My missus has provided me with a Tamiya 1/35 Crusader (Italeri originally?) and a rather more complicated Meng Whippet. They're up next after I finish my Do17z. Crusader first......looks a bit less daunting! Thanks for the uploads.
Wonderful! Yes the gloss or not gloss debate is something that can be debated.....I have that very Crusader in my stash, a build that is coming soon (ish) good luck with it!
I'm in the same boat, just returning to the hobby after many years away. I still remember the thrill of these kits and I'm enjoying these vids in the same light. However, some things still pass me by like ... what is a 'pin wash' (is it a 'panel wash' under a different name) and how to thin oil properly etc. A beginner may not know these terms and techniques. One of my biggest bugbears watching TH-camrs is how much paint they seem to use. For example, when dry brushing they pour out a blob of paint, cover their brush in it and then wipe it all off again ... why not just use less paint? It offends my parsimonious Northern soul ... ;)
Love the series. I recently returned to modeling after a long respite. After a bunch of research, I got bogged down by all the advanced techniques. Your series is helping me take a step back and I have realized I can still have a good looking model by performing the basic tasks well. Thanks for all your time and effort! I look forward to your next video every day.
I am just thinking about getting started and I have to say, you do a great job of explaining yourself properly and setting expectations that we don't have to do anything we don't feel like if it feels too difficult. It sounds obvious, but when you are trying to start a hobby its important to hear that. Love the videos!
I’m loving the series mate. I have been modelling since about 1968 but I think that a series like this for beginners is a great thing to do. I would have loved to have something like this back when I started. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Canada Bob
Great series! Greetings from USA! First time modeler, followed almost step by step on the Churchill (except for the diorama and figures - next time lol). Think it turned out pretty good! Appreciate all the beginner considerations and explanation of what and why. Watched the whole armor series and now onto the other videos of yours to build on skills with the next one, which I think might be like your Tamiya easy eight Sherman. Thanks again!
So pleased I've found these videos gonna start modeling again and I have put this on my Christmas list for family 😁 just have to get an air brush now and bits and bobs. Looking forward to getting started and following all your videos. All the best an have a great Christmas fella 👍✌️
I use micro set, I get the decals in place then start working it with a q-tip. Once its been rolled and its set I dont wait any time and apply sol. I usually give the sol 5 minutes or so to work, then roll the decal again until smooth
Good video series on the Churchill!! Got me re-interested in to finally finishing my kit of this vehicle after 6 years or so. Just have to find which closet I placed it in!! OOOPS!!
Great series of videos. I’m working on the Churchill and have just painted the tracks. It made me wonder why on your model the spare links on the hull are grey yet the active tracks are brown. Wouldn’t the spares rust at a similar rate to the active links?
Love these. Top work. And a great sentiment about the hobby and how serious (or not) people take it. NB: my latest build I had to put decals on a satin coat for the first time as I ran out of gloss, and they were an absolute horror story! 😂
Great tutorial. I bought this model kit to follow along. I'm just at the dust adding stage and applied slightly too much, so dabbed a cotton pad in my thinners and rubbed the dust away. It did start to bring some paint off - would I be best to let it all dry and then re-apply some further matt coats?
This is due to the weathering materials used having more bite on a Matt surface, if you do it over a gloss it is difficult to get the effect to stay how you want it, as it can wipe off very easily. This is neither correct or incorrect and there are some techniques that work over a gloss very well so trial and error is a good way to approach this.
I really enjoy your gluing models. And you can say that thanks to him I'm a better modeler, I just want to ask about the colors you use .. Since I had a bad experience with colors from the company TAMIYA so I paint everything with Revell colors. So I would like to ask what is the replacement for your paints from another company ... At the moment I am also gluing Churchilla mk 7 .. I will be looking forward to the answer .. Sorry for the translation, but everything is translated via Google translator ...
Being in my 70s I ,feel l would like to ta ke up modelling again (from 60. Yrs agp !,,). Do you have a list of tools I would need ?? Also best glue paint etc. John
Hi, I’m looking to try and build my first model in about 35 years so basically totally new to the hobby and your videos are definitely inspiring me to. Do you thin the Tamiya paints you used for this?
As with anything, it depends on what you want to portray. Tanks are sometimes washed down or even have more paint chucked at them. Not all tanks have the same amount of dirt/weathering.
Getting back into the hobby after 30 years. Love the videos, just getting my kit together and will start at the beginning of the playlist with each kit. What do you use to clean your airbrush between sprays?
@@ChampionScaleModelling +10 lacquer thinner. Buy it in bulk at a home supply center. I buy it by the quart jug. Also a cheap double action gravity fed airbrush will work fine, mine cost me $25.
Beginners, dont try to cut letters apart like that. Get some microsol set and sol, just trim the outer edges of a decal. You dont have to spray the whole model with gloss, just brush paint the little areas where the decals go with some gloss, thinly, its doesnt take much.
The main problem with applying a gloss only to the area where decals go is that even supposedly colourless transparent coatings will slightly alter the apparent characterists of the paint underneath it. While the change is subtle, human vision is surprisingly good at discerning subtle differences in colour, texture, reflectivity, etc.. Furthermore, the tiny difference in thickness between the areas that received an extra coat (the gloss coat) and those that didn't will minutely alter the way light is reflected from the surface & change the apparent 'depth' of the finish. Consequently, even after the gloss coat has dried completely, decals have been added, and a clear matte coat has been applied & has dried, the area that was gloss coated will appear slightly different than the adjacent areas that did not receive the gloss coat. And, depending on the lighting, the difference may show up in photos/videos of the model. On the other hand, if the entire model is glossed coated everywhere, any subtle shift in colour, texture, reflectivity etc will be uniform everywhere, and with nothing to compare it too, anyone looking at the model will never know the difference. ☺
i am 66. built several. but i see new methods . i am learning. thank you for sharing .
I like the technique to remove the carrier from the decals.
Love the video. I've been out of modelling for 40 years and have just returned. It's great to get your quality tutorials. Thank you so much.
Welcome back 😉👌
I'm starting to do armor and this series is very helpful.

I don't know if workability is a word either, but I knew exactly what you meant! My autocorrect didn't change it either, so looking goooood

Have a look at the first video in this series on my channel, talks about all the stuff you need to start
Hi I’m about to start this build but I’m not sure what color you used for the part on the left at 22:22 was wondering if anyone knows.
Tamiya XF9 Hull Red
@@ChampionScaleModelling thank you very much
Do you recommend applying a matte coat after weathering to protect the oil paint and pigments, or is that unnecessary?
@12:12 Can you please explain what a 'pin wash' is? Thank you.
Hi, I’m looking to try and build my first model in about 35 years so basically totally new to the hobby and your videos are definitely inspiring me to. Do you thin the Tamiya paints you used for this?
Yes about 50/50 for the airbrush, brush painting I would also thin it
If you could? What kind of compressor are you using. And what is the psi. rang.
What do you use for the dust wash?
Hi Just found channel and very impressed. When you used xf-61 on tank, did you add thinners when you sprayed it? Thanks
Yes I did, about 70/30 thinners to paint and I used Tamiya X20a thinners
@@ChampionScaleModelling I’ll write that down. 70% thinners. Thanks for quick response
and what do i have to use for decor/stickers for them to stick?
it still sticks tho right?
alright thanks
does it make a difference if you use a paint brush or airbrush?
Did you just spray on the matt coat before starting weathering - what did you use ??
Yes, Tamiya XF86 thinned with their thinners to about 40/60 paint to thinners
@@ChampionScaleModelling Thanks for the update - i going to be painting my churchill in desert Cam - any advice or links to tips ?
Just go for it and don’t worry too much! Keep the paint thin and work in good smooth layers
Do you thin the gloss coat?
Everything sounds better in the Queens English!....
The queen is of German decent. But yeh you are right👍🏻
Great work with the tank but i think the tanks can be more dirty..
As with anything, it depends on what you want to portray. Tanks are sometimes washed down or even have more paint chucked at them. Not all tanks have the same amount of dirt/weathering.
This is so sad, I don't have an airbrush so I had to hand paint it all😅

Well a varnish coat helps protect the paint from the wash thinner, doesn't it? My thinner eated through my varnish and ruined it though 🤦♂️
@@fedemotta3 yes, but its usually not necessary to gloss varnish, decal, then varnish again. paint is expensive.
