- Larrin Thomas, a steel metallurgist from Pittsburgh, PA, developed a passion for steel through knife shows with his father. His quest for truth led to a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering. Today, he shares expertise through his blog, Knife Steel Nerds, and develops innovative steels, including Magnacut.

A magnacut based Damascus product that could compete with Damasteel would really be the coolest thing. It would be a great way for Dr.Thomas to come full circle to his youth with his father being a Damascus maker

I was surprised when Buck came out with the 110 in magnacut but it seems like a lot of knife companies are coming out with it now days.
If one has the means to use the best materials available then it would be a shame not to I think. 🔪
I was excited to see the Kershaw Leek in Magnacut. I got one and I’m excited to see if it’s worth the hype.

There are gems in every industry who push things forward and Larrin is undoubtedly one of them in the knife industry. Also I’m glad he talked a little bit about the technical side of magnacut because that’s what is so special about it and as he said, a game changer. I see alot of people claiming magnacut is all hype but it’s essentially a proof of concept that opens the door to more “stainless tool steels”. Just imagine a stainless 10v or k390 equivalent!
Dr. Thomas is not only someone who is pushing the industry because it is his job but he has a love for that few we have met surpass

@@eskee1 Off the top of my head in Magnacut I’ve got a Winterblade Factor, a Hinderer Eklipse, a rebladed Demko AD20, a Demko AD22, a Tactile knife co Maverick, Tactile Bexar, and a tactile Rockwall. Not the majority of my collection but probably a plurality.
The Magna Carta of Magnacut, really cool to hear everything he had to say,that's why I love this chann,it's not only knives,it's every thing about the knives,the creators,the steel,heat treatment, quenching,just everything about them,and Magnacut steel is the best version of blades I've found,I put it through what most wouldn't,and it's definitely something that's changed the industry, forever it gets others thinking and I can appreciate this information that creates knowledge to move forward in the beast of blades,in case you didn't know,I'ma blade freak too!,thanks for the vid,see ya on the next one!

It's so fun to listen to knife designers and metallurgists brain-dump on us plebs about stuff we enjoy so much! I have yet to acquire a knife with a blade using MC but I'm on the hunt 😁

Just ordered a set of 6 kitchen knives made of magnacut. Hopefully he can make a blade that is 10 in toughness and 10 in hardness and 10 in corrosion resistance, then i will order another set and quit. For now, magnacut will stay with me forever ❤

Love this type of innovation, and the response by knife makers. Got a Spyderco Native 5 Salt a few weeks ago, and just ordered a RMJ Tactical Unmei in Magnacut.
The Salt is great and RMJ makes some sweet blades!

One of my favorite things about MagnaCut is how broadly available it is on so many knives. I am a sweaty guy who works in outdoor temps so my knives get soaked. Other very stainless steels were very niche and only used by a few makers so my selection was limited. MagnaCut has changed that.

A great interview. Seems like knife steel has been the source of competition in the EDC community so it good to see the back story on Magnacut. I believe, like most things, no steel is perfect for every application. It's a delicate balancing act of properties to achieve a stated goal with any side benefits discovered along the way. I look forward to Larrin's next steel.

Most of the great ideas were accidents. This was very educational, Still new to knives, but videos like this really teach me a lot about knives and metals. Hope to be back in the store by the end of the summer.

I'm really excited for Larrin's other steels. Niomax is one that has appeared on his website; I have the impression it's something like AEB-L with added niobium, which should be an ultra-tough stainless.

I love cruwear! Well magna cut get as sharp as cruwear?
Take your time and it can be as sharp as any other!
You will need diamond abrasives to properly sharpen Magnacut. But for cruwear that should be the same.

Hah! Magnacut is nothing compared to my Ultra Porn Steel 666. Problem is just that I can't sell knives made out of Ups666. Too dangerous. Everytime someone drops one of my knives, the planet gets split. Last time I handed one to somebody was letting a T-Rex compare it to his teeth and you know what happened to dinosaurs!
His father created Stainless Damascus........
