    Dr. House has clinic hours, just like I do, so today I'm looking at a bunch of his strangest patient encounters to see how close they are to real life. Specifically we talk about circumcision, pregnancy, immaculate conceptions, athlete's foot, sinus infections, cat allergies, rectal blockage, asthma and inhalers. Let me know down below if there are any more scenes you want me to look at!

Nope, House just lied and used their ignorance about genetics to help her cover up the affair. He tells her to give the cat up for her health, but she says she can't because it was her late mother's and no one else in the family could take it in. House then offers her allergy pills and steroid injections, both of which she turns her nose up at. When she asks if he has any other solutions, he gives a classic House response: "well, if you live near the river, I have a bag you can borrow." 🤣💀

      I would rather call it his supernatural ability to make some really lucky "informed guesses". When I moved into my current flat, I saw the wear and scratches around the lock and thought of Sherlock's surmise that this is indicative of a drunk having used it. Well, it turns out 🤣 when you keep one of the double storm doors closed (which you probably would as it can stay locked, making it easier to lock the other when you leave), it gets really dark in the entryway when you step in to unlock the door because you occlude the light. So, sure, I could be scratching the lock because I'm a drunk, OR... it can be hard to get the key into the hole in the dark 🤦‍♀

    It’s important to note that house is supposed to be the doctor version of detective Holmes (one of the main inspirations for the show) the way he knows what’s wrong is simply that, he just knows. No one in the show knows how he knows and no one else in the show has the same ability. That’s also how the idea of him messing up is impossible to himself.

    • @MAGICBaNaNAz64
      @MAGICBaNaNAz64 ปีที่แล้ว +164

      Doesn't it all come down to inductive/deductive ability? The thing about House and Holmes is that the main thing which differentiates them from just being purely omniscient beings that "know" everything, is that they both have an absurd level of reasoning skills and deductive ability. The smallest of details that are beyond the detection threshold of most people just come obviously to both these characters, which is why it always seems like they just "know" everything about a person or situation. With this in mind, there are some things that even with their ridiculous deductive ability, they still miss, simply because some things are even beyond their detection threshold. It's what makes the portrayal of Dr. House as a character so interesting, because his diagnostic process is just a masterclass in reasoning and deductive logic that theoretically anyone is capable of.

    • @HolyTurtleOfDoom
      @HolyTurtleOfDoom ปีที่แล้ว +90

      Except that he gets it wrong all the time. Literally every episode until the end. The point is he always eventually solves the "case"
      The clinic duty scenes are supposed to just be fun laughs. He hates them because it's so mundane and boring.

    • @Hitchcock00Starlet
      @Hitchcock00Starlet ปีที่แล้ว +45

      The original Holmes and Watson stories worked a bit better though because they were told through Watson, the in narrative stand in for the reader. The reader only ever knows what Watson knows in each moment. Watson is intelligent himself, but not as practiced in deduction and not as observant, so Holmes explains his methods and reasoning for each case in a way that a lay person can understand, knowledge Holmes has or information he has deduced that can seem like magic during the narrative is always revealed in the end to be Holmes just using his finely honed talents in a very logical and rational manner. The show House has no real audience stand in, so it always seems like House is superhuman compared to all these other canonically very talented doctors. The patients come close, as they have their diagnosis explained to them in simple terms at the end, but the patients themselves usually have hidden information that the audience doesn't learn until House or the team uncovers it. So while the show is based on the Holmes formula, House seemingly being omnipotent is not a hold over from the original Holmes's stories.

    • @Hitchcock00Starlet
      @Hitchcock00Starlet ปีที่แล้ว +57

      @@HolyTurtleOfDoom Holmes gets things wrong too, the most popular book is him being out maneuvered by Irene Adler. I think because of the nature of modern medicine, House having his theories debunked by tests or the further deterioration of the patient is actually pretty faithful to the original stories - the point being that Holmes theories also usually change when confronted with conflicting data. The clinic scenes are fun and usually narratively significant, leading to a breakthrough in the main case or an interesting parallel to something a character is currently experiencing, but they do definitely sacrifice some steps in deductive reasoning to fit them into to the episodes.

    • @limarien6405

Like I had to use my rescue inhaler upwards of 4 times a day. My doctor found this concerning and started me on the literal lowest does of a daily steroid inhaler. And voila, a short time later, no more hacking up my lungs multiple times a day.
    Of course, every once in a while, I forget to take a dose because, I'm human. On those days, there is often a moment of "why am I coughing all of a sudden?" Oh yeah, forgot to take my inhaler. Take it and I'm mostly fine again :)

    The best part of House is the fact he breaks into his patients homes to get more information and the patients don't seem that upset about it. Like if a doctor broke into my home I would have been a little more focused on that part tbh.

    0:33 well, House is loosely based on Sherlock Holmes books, and Sherlock _was_ the OG algorithm: "there's specific type of mud on your boots, it can only be found in particular part of London; the only place that could be of interest to you there is this particular store". Such scenes in House are clearly homages to Sherlock's deductions.
    And I don't think they were ever perceived as realistic. Agatha Christie threw shade on Conan Doyle about "artificially contrived and far-fetched" deductions were (in "the Clocks", via Poirot's opinion)

    Hey Dr Mike. Since the show seems to be about 1 in a billion medical issues, I thought it would be fun or at least interesting to you and others in the medical field to share my story since I used to be the patient in one of those 1 in a billion medical issues. I'm 41 now but about 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a double aortic dissection. No trauma and I don't have Marfan syndrome. I was in the shower, when my toes all at once started to go numb. I thought maybe I was standing on a nerve or something, so I sat down in the tub to feel my toes a bit better. Within 10 minutes I was paralyzed from roughly the belly button down.
    I called 911 made it to the hospital. Police officer actually ended up getting to me first before EMS and took me to the hospital. Strange but he ends up telling attending that he feels my complaint of paralysis is due to drugs. So attending leaves me, pretty much unattended for several hours at a time for an eight hour period. Doctor comes along and asks "How are you feeling" and I tell him still can't feel anything. So he jabs the bottom of my foot and when I don't move his face turns ghost white. CT scan follows by another ambulance ride to another hospital and a very long surgery. I had damage to one of my heart valves as well as a dissection in two places. One near my heart and one in my stomach.
    Roughly 10 months prior to this I went to my doctor to tell him that something was wrong with me. At the time I was into MMA and doing high levels of cardio but my breathing wasn't "right". I felt like I wasn't getting enough oxygen as normal. He did a full work up on me and found nothing. He looked at nearly everything........ BUT....... my heart. As other doctors have said to me since, "Why would you look at a 30 year olds heart?". So I wasn't getting enough oxygen because my heart wasn't functioning 100% only a portion was.
    Didn't feel anything the day of the dissection that would lead me or any other reasonable person to think that anything was wrong. I felt no pain before or after the dissection. The only reason I knew something was wrong was because of the dissection in my stomach, which cut the blood flow off to my legs. I was literally alerted to an aortic dissection by another dissection. Had it not happened that way, I wouldn't have been able to type this. I'm fairly certain I made some medical journal somewhere. I was contacted by the hospital years later by a doctor doing a case study of some sort and was publishing a paper. He asked several questions and I never heard back.
    Just thought I would share.

    Doctor Mike, one thing to keep in mind is that House is Sherlock Holmes, so his powers of perception and deduction are portrayed just like Holmes, who, if you've read any of Doyle's stories, does exactly the same kind of thing. He also shares a lot of other personality traits (and vices) with Holmes beyond his powerful skills of investigation.

    I just learned something in this video. About a year ago, I had an asthma attack that lasted way longer than it should have. I went to the ER, and due to the fact I have multiple anxiety disorders, the doctors assumed it was an anxiety attack despite the fact that I told them multiple times that I could think clearly and that my only symptom was not being able to breathe correctly. They gave me anxiety medication. This made me drowsy, and I started doing that slower breathing thing Dr Mike talked about.
    About five months later I was diagnosed with asthma and prescribed an emergency inhaler.

I was hesitant about starting my daughter on steroid inhalers for the same reason, but research has moved on and shows that being active because your asthma is well controlled is better for bone density than the risks from the steroid inhalers.

    Hey mike, I have eustachian tube dysfunction so hearing stuff about Eustachian tubes was pretty cool. I’m 15 and have had 9 sets of tubes. They diagnosed me when I was 14. I still don’t fully understand what’s wrong with me but my ears feel full a lot, I am close to being hard of hearing, I get ear infections almost monthly, and my ears are just bothering me constantly but there’s no cure that my ENT knew of so I’m just chillin.

      Did you have any tooth infections ( cyst or abscess at the root) or do you have allergies that cause you inflammation in your throat or sinuses? Or maybe rheumatism? Those too CAN cause blockages and inflammation in your ear canal... I know cause I hit the trifecta on those questions. I too get ear infections often, I'm sensitive to cold, and that's why I have a maintenance treatment that I use every night before sleep. If I ever get flare ups, I also use ear drops, per the instructions on the prospect. The funny part in my case, is that it wasn't an ENT to figure it out... it was my dentist.
