This guy is a living legend. I recently reached out to him to help support and inspire my Dad to go through some important medical procedures that he was scared of and refusing. I didn't expect much but 2 days later he called Dad and managed to convince him. He has told me to call him anytime Dad needs anything. Completely blown away by his generosity of spirit. Furthermore he lives by the principals. Never miss the chance to inspire.

Saw this speech 1 year ago. I am 50 years old. I started to make our bed every day. After 3 months my wife said: " You have changed. You are more positive as you ever was." This speech changed me. I was always positive, but now I feel that I can still change everything I want when I believe in myself. Greetings from Austria.

At almost the lowest point in my life ramdomly came across this speech. Not in a battlefield but my mine field was jobless, spouse very delicate brain sugery, son hit by a car, did not see how to move forward. Was going to have to give up our home but had to find a way to keep it. Had to fix the home by myself to get a loan. Took 2½ years to secure the loan. All repairs done by me. Got all done but the last step was repairing roof. I skitterred all over the roof repairing securing the tiles. Trimmed trees by standing on the roof. At last done & came down my ladder but............woke up on ground head bleeding ............. just stood up blood streaming my sides. Went inside washed the blood off & immediately continued sanding the house im prep for painting. My car blew the seals so only way to get groceries was walk. Did that made dinner. That night though was in pain like I never knew ~ my back was screaming ~ allowed myself tylenol ~ next day I knew had to keep painting ~ had to finish pullng all the weeds out of the yard & trim all the bushes prune all bushes. Got my inspection got my loan. Continued to walk 3-4 miles daily for groceries carried on my back til 2 years later but started to fall down a lot. Then in March too much lack of balance & pain. Well keep going. Do not have good medical care so tough it out. I do not like canes but finally gave in a month ago though with my momentum just start running without the cane. Keep moving. Keep moving. Keep moving. Yard is a mess again plumbing needs repair roof needs more repair ....... but McRaven's tinder resonates through my inner sanctum ~ keep moving keep moving keep moving ~ ride over pain like surfing a huge wave 🌊🏄‍♀️ keep moving keep moving keep moving ~ 🪜🧗‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏃‍♂️🦘

I play this in the morning while I’m making breakfast. My 7 year old absolutely loves it. During quarantine I got in a bit of a funk & came out to the kitchen where my sweet boy had everything needed for pancakes laid out with this encouraging speech playing on the tv. He said “We are NOT sugar cookies! Let’s do this together!” I burst into tears. Pulled up my big girl pants & took a lesson from my child. We don’t give up just because things look different. ❤️

The importance of the first one is something I will always appreciate because it’s so true. I was struggling with depression when I first found this speech, and whilst I won’t say it’s the single reason that I got better (because hard work, determination and discipline also got here) it helped me see everything differently. I started making my bed. Within a week, it became a habit, but it made me see how it affected my entire life. It made my mum happy, because she saw that I was doing better. It made my dad happy because he saw my mum was happy. It made everyone happy. And that made me happy, happy when I hadn’t been happy for a while. I began to enjoy life again, I started to take care of myself. I started to workout, to learn a new language and to work hard in school. And even when I got annoyed, when I failed, I came home to my made bed and my clean room. I still do it today. This is the kind of man I will be.

I saw this speech about 1.5 years ago, as a teenager going through an existential crisis who has been searching for motivational speeches, I strangely found this speech the most inspirational. And just the fact that an action so small, can change the course of our day, fascinates me. So I fixed my bed every day, even on days when I had to change the sheets right after, because 1. It looks and makes me feel tidier and 2. For the reason this great man said, it's the first step in changing the world, as peculiar as it may sound.
I must say, it definitely changed my look on life and honed my discipline.

Good to hear and I agree this is one of the best motivational speeches I’ve heard. I was making my bed neatly before I even saw this speech and I never quite understood why. This speech help put that need into perspective. I also feel like it helps give a person a sense of order and a way of controlling the things in your life that you can dictate.

I learned a lot from this speech, a hell of a lot. I felt very bad about having been disrespectful toward military types in the past... Never lose hope but this is one of our darkest hours and he would be driven into the ground by us animals. Change won't come from the top down. It's starts with each of us. This is the sort of video that I would go back and watch when I need a spiritual pick-me-up. I've watched this video twice and both times the ten lessons he refers to speak to me in a way that feels personal. It's difficult to pick a favorite lesson talked about in this video since every lesson spoken about is so profoundly inspiring, but if I had to I would choose lesson number nine; "If you want to change the world, start singing when you are up to your neck in mud."
The reason I chose lesson number nine as my favorite is because I resonate so much with trying to find hope in the most trying of times. I had a very difficult upbringing and I won't bore anyone with the specifics, but hope is what kept me going. I have sung my heart out time and time again when I was up to my neck in the mud of my own life and hearing Naval Admiral William H. McRaven speak about learning this lesson moved me. If I had to give anyone going through a difficult time any piece of advice, it would be this.

I find it interesting that people can be so close minded. Not all are. The people that can look ahead of race, religion, sexes, countries, governments, disabilities, political view and past history, just to name a few, are the people you want to surround yourself with. I have friends from many different nationalities, races, countries, governments, disabilities, sexes, religion, political view and look ahead of past history. The world would be a mighty place if all were open minded.
Diversity is fun and would be a boring world without it.
This does not condone human atrocities like murder, torture, rape, hate, taking over of other people or countries or laws of those countries etcetera of any kind, just to name a few.
Let all people be equal and decide for their own countries on how to make a world a better place to live, work, and thrive.
The world is far from this advancement, but there is always hope.
There is the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover", you can also say:
      "Don't judge a person/people by their color"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their religion"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their sex"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their race"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their disability"
"Don't judge a person/people by their political view"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their government"
      "Don't judge a person/people by their country"
"Don't judge a person/people by their..." fill in the blank.

I first ever saw this as an army cadet in Highschool. Despite the fact that I no longer do cadets this will forever be my favourite classroom lesson of my time at the caded unit. We went on camps staying up until midnight and being woken up by reveille at 5:30am and walking though the freezing cold with frost sticking to your boots and webbing being able to see your breath and being so physically exhausted you wanted to collapse but after watching this as a unit together, we all had a new sense of hope. Some of those people went on to be part of the army and seeing where they started and then where they got to after watching this exact speech on one rainey wednesday night and a week later going on a comp in the freezing cold, made you realize that little things can mean the most and shape and change someone forever.
