    With the Dead & Co residency at The Sphere being extended into August, does that mean there's no chance for a John Mayer solo record in 2024? Plus, we look at "Please Be You," and unreleased track from The Search For Everything sessions.

    At this point I feel weirdly completely satisfied with Mayer's catalogue. I could keep rotating his 8 albums and never run out of music to listen to. I feel already so blessed that we have what we have, and more than anything I just want John to do what it is that he wants to do. I'm still much more interested in a world tour than another album, although at the same time I would be ill-prepared financially if he announced a world tour within the next year.

      I like the idea of a non-album world tour where he plays some new music. Best of all worlds.

    I started to get into Dead & Co because of John but I never truly dug into them until this past week when I went to the Sphere. I went to Thursday's show and loved it so much that I got tickets for next day too, which was a completely different show and therefore equally amazing. I thought I was going to get a little starstruck finally watching John live but honestly I walked away pretty happy with the experience overall rather than seeing John play. After the shows I've been devouring The Grateful Dead content/history so I'm happy to say John turned me into a Deadhead and the Sphere couldn't have been more amazing! Great jams, amazing visuals, the sound doesn't THUMP you like you said but it's still perfectly enjoyable, and the fans are very sweet and positive. If you are a John Mayer fan and have an open mind to enjoying Dead & Co's project I would HIGHLY recommend going to a Sphere show!

    Even though I'm not a fan of Dead & Co, I appreciate everything he's done for the Dead and their fan base. I also think it's really helped him to expand his own fan base, so I think it's been very positive overall. That being said, I'm so ready for him to get back to his OWN music. When he plays with the Dead, I feel a little robbed. Just trying to be patient!

      Playing in D&C has catapulted his guitar playing into another realm, and I’m so thankful for that too. He was already top of his game prior to that, so the fact that he’s leveled up like he has over the last decade is just incredible. I agree. Can’t wait for new JM music!

    The sphere sounds amazing and all TH-cam videos don’t do it justice. There are 80 speakers per person in the sphere and it’s unlike any concert experience you have ever had. And anyone watching this channel should be going to see it for themselves. No video will do it justice and makes sense why the band chose to not release video, yet. But folks should do some research on that sphere audio system because he did not do a good job of explaining it

    • @EverythingMayer
      @EverythingMayer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Is that a real ratio? 80:1?! That’s crazy. I’ve done zero research on the system itself, but it sounds like I was on the right track with it being very far from traditional concert sound. I’ll dig into it!

    For John, Dead music is still new music, since every night is different. When I started playing guitar seriously during the pandemic, my models were Hendrix, Clapton, Garcia, and Mayer. I've seen the first three. Mayer pulled me towards focusing on the Dead. It's an exhaustive world. A world it took John a while to figure it out. And musically? Oh my. I recently saw a video where Bob Weir said he figured out how to play rhythm guitar with Jerry from listening to McCoy Tyner backing John Coltrane. For a musician of Mayer's caliber, he's gonna ride this experience as long as he can.

    • @EverythingMayer
      @EverythingMayer  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All one has to do is listen to Mayer’s playing pre-Dead & Co vs post-Dead & Co. That’s why he loves it. The best got better, and even though the Dead might not completely be my cup of tea, my eyes (and ears) certainly have been opened by JM’s involvement. Great comment. I appreciate it!

      @mikem668 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@EverythingMayer John made a comment talking about how sometimes music finds you. I've bought records over 50 years ago that I'm still hoping to like or at least understand better. Bitches Brew being my favorite example.
      John also has a video on his learning Dead tunes. He talks about going down a phrase and getting lost. Music being like a neighborhood. Blues, he doesn't get lost. Garcia is a different thing, especially when he's intentionally not trying to copy him. And the Dead was originally a blues band, though Garcia was a folk and bluegrass player. Including banjo.
      I get lost, too. No surprise. But when I realized my Going Down the Road Feeling Bad had turned into Rambling Man, I went whoa. What's going on. I bought New Morning the week it came out, I'm sure Dylan , who entitled an album Love and Theft, wouldn't care about the song similarity with If Not For You. Unfortunately he sold his music and the suits might not agree.
      In a Dead documentary, Bob Weir IIRC said Pig Pen was a great blues player, but when he had to shift from a blues shuffle to triplets he got lost. Using the Dead as a way to connect music theory and the guitar through individual songs, I'm learning that nuance is everything. You can't notated it. I use tab to get me in the ballpark, but sometimes I still can't tell what's wrong. It's taught me it's never too late to learn. An sometimes the brain just figures it out. As John grew up, I think he realized something similar. I think that's what the greats do. And Mayer is a philosopher. The road goes on forever.
      Thanks for the info about the Sphere. I sensed the sound was odd.

    I have so many thoughts on the sphere residency. Mayer has benefited from playing with the Dead and the Dead has benefited from having Mayer. I was a little surprised about the extended dates. Low key, I had a jealous moment. 😆 I will continue to wait patiently for new music. Fingers crossed he’s working on something behind the scenes plus getting some rest. Tom, you made me laugh so hard. I keep checking Ticket prices every few days. I need to stop the madness! It’s not happening unless someone wants to sponsor me too. 😂 Moving on, ‘Please Be You’ is a beautiful song. However, The search album has a special place with me. I can’t imagine any song being replaced with ‘ Please Be You’. I would love to hear it live! Great video, keep up the good work.

      I feel the same way about TSFE. Couldn't really imagine adding it or replacing another song for it either. The more dates the add the more I look at my calendar and say "Oh, I wonder if that would work...it's only going to cost, like, $2k in the end" lol. Going to need to quadruple views on this channel to make that happen!

    The 2 after dinner mints that come to mind are the “whooo hooo hooo hooooo”s during the bridge of In Your Atmosphere off WTLI and the complete beat change up at the end of Moving On and Getting Over. The IYA mints adds even more depth to such a deeps song, and the mint in MOGO has such a funky vibe and you can really feel Thindercat’s baseline.

    Yeah, John turned me into a Deadhead, though it also runs in the family, I just didn’t get into it until John was part of it. Seeing him at the Sphere this last week was incredible. He is playing so great right now. Also, yes, the Sphere sounds amazing. Also there are haptics in some of the seats. We were in the 400s and that whole section has the haptics. So, the drums and space section in particular was insane because your seats react to the sound. But yeah, usually being that far from the stage, I would be disappointed, like I’m missing out on something, but not so at the Sphere. It’s an unreal experience.

    You're right, his album will be delayed; as you can see, he is having a great time in Las Vegas with with those grandparents, he even recently announced that he will be broadcasting his radio show from the casino🎲🤑, so I doubt if he goes to his recording studio during concert breaks. I sincerely doubt it. 🤔
    Maybe he will gain more fans from the older generation, but he will lose young ones if the break between the release of the next album is 4 or 5 years. Not all fans , especially us, outside the USA can attend his concerts.
    By the way, I would like to add that Bob Dylan's beautiful song If not for you was also performed by the unforgettable Oliwia Newton John. I have a CD with her performance, released in Germany in 2001.
    Like all loyal fans - I'm waiting for his new music,🙏 but I doubt if John cares about it as much as his fans do, given his other activities, such as playing in a band whose music I don't like (sorry I don't understand the phenomenon of Dead and....) meetings as part of his watch hobby, his own radio channel, etc.
    But I'm waiting patiently,♥ and in the meantime I'm listening to great new albums by other great artists from USA🎵😄 .

    Dead and Company are a pain in the ass, i’m sorry but it is, they already had a farewell tour but now they’re back, i love the 60s and 70s music but never got into them, they’re boring, I think you’ve really love them to really appreciate and love them I don’t know if I’m making sense here, I heard some Deads are complaining for the tickets price, not from USA so I could not go there anyway but I would never go either I could vomit with those visuals🤣, anyway, I think I’m with you, the new album is gonna be delayed until maybe starting to record in Jan 25? Stay until May 25, go on tour with the Dead again and then the album coming out in October/November 25 and not touring until 26. I wish at least we had a single like maybe Drifting or in the Neighborhood or maybe what he has done with Continuum back in the days when he was promoting and updating on myspace every week. I wish he would more focus on his music but now radio and Dead i guess are his priority.

    John has said in the past two years that he's been working on a new album but I'm not sure how he'll release it without a label. John doesn't strike me as a guy that will start his own label just to put out his own music. I'm not even sure what label would be rushing to sign him because his last few or several of his albums haven't taken over the world commercially. I'm not one of those people that need a new Mayer album every year. Sob Rock came out less than three years ago. Now if John was on a Sade run, not releasing music for decade long stretches I'd be reasonably annoyed. I can wait on new music for a bit longer, but I always LOVE John's interviews and these shows seem to take away from him doing that. I've heard Please Be You and I gotta say I wasn't overly impressed by it. I listened to it once but didn't feel like I was missing anything really. I think John got a bit frightened because Bono might have come knocking on his door about Heartbreak Warfare sounding like U2's Bad. John admitted it in his Storytellers episode and didn't really seem to care at the time that it sounded very similar if not identical to their song. Speaking of Sheeran, I still don't know how he SKATED on that Thinking Out Loud lawsuit. He should send his lawyers champagne every day for winning that one.

      Oh wow. There’s a lot here. I love this comment! It’s like 4 episodes of material in one comment. As far as a label, I think all he needs is a distribution channel. So, my guess is he’d just sign a distribution deal with a big entity (Prince did this). With physical distribution of music being a thing of the past, it’s not really a big deal or difference in the end. Appreciate you listening!
